Cumulus seemed visibly frustrated by Jade's ability to dodge his attacks, only adding to how sloppy his defenses were. The kick was a direct hit to his chest. Sending him backwards in a way to where he would have landed on his head if he didn't have his wings to maintain his balance. The stallion stopped his assault and squared off across from her, spitting up a wad of blood nonchalantly. "Come on, a kick?" He mocked, as if he arrogantly wanted his opponent to be stronger. "Let's see that glowing blade. I know you can do better than this!"

 

Jade allowed a smirk to cross her muzzle as her kick landed direct, and she returned to her neutral pose as Cumulus squared off across the arena from her.

 

He wants more of me... I need to keep level-headed. Dodging and exploiting his weaknesses is working - it's frustrating him. That means more weakspots to exploit. I just need to egg him on.

 

She glanced down at her sword, and stared Cumulus square in the eyes as she slowly sheathed it with her wing.

 

That should get his temper going.

Snowstorm looked at her for a few awkward seconds as his lagging brain tried to put together his next sentence in a more coherent way than he'd been speaking earlier. "So yer sayin' you miss the way things used to be or you thinkin it wus worse?" He asked. "Cus I'm here... I'm here cause the old times are over and I got nothin. Firs, Roto and Oni go n'get emselves killed. Then Mason goes on a damn rampage; and then Femi..." He said, trailing off after mentioning the name of his female colleague. He started to grip his cup with his fetlock so tightly that the glass shattered, spilling alcohol onto the table and dripping into his lap. "That BITCH!" he screamed before throwing the largest chunk of the broken glass onto the ground, making it shatter.

 

He then hunched over the puddle and broken glass on the counter in front of him, starting to sob as most of the attention in the bar was on him. "I loss everytheng." He sobbed.

The leg began to vibrate as his muscles tensed up and his veins popped out. The green aura surrounding him became thicker and more vibrant around his armed hoof. "Muscles can only do so much. There was no spirit power behind your kick."

 

"Let me give you a demonstration!" He yelled as he went for another direct attack, extending his left front leg to try and block her from dodging to the right and jabbing forward with the knife in his other hoof.

Sederia simply rolled her eyes. ​"Feh, I know how it feels to lose everything. No matter how hard you work for it, or try--shit ends up going to hell and making it to where your life is in ruin and can't provide honor for your family." ​The mare downed her drink, groaning at the pains in her stomach.

He looks nearly psychotic. No doubt I'm getting under his skin. If I keep this up, this fight should be over in no time!

 

She noticed his left leg extending, which would block her dodging to the right. So if she couldn't go right...

 

She waited for the jab, and jerked herself to the left, using the momentum to aim a spinning kick toward his spine.

At 10 AM sharp, the next train pulled into Bangcolt station.  While the majority of passengers hurriedly shuffled out of the station, one crystal pony remained behind, looking about at the strange setting she found herself in.  

 

Carnelian Clout was no stranger to travel, but this was the first time she had gone travelling naked.  Not naked in the sense that she wasn't wearing any clothing (though that wouldn't have mattered anyway), but naked in the fact that she had left her entire entourage behind.  Guards, hoofmaidens, servants, none of them were there now to protect, service, or comfort her in this strange land.  

 

However, it had to be done.  She was here for an important reason, and to come with an entire retinue would not have had the effect she desired.  She had come to prove and improve her talents, and the presence of guards would have given her the appearance of uncertainty.  Her powers were rusty, but they could still hold up.  Or so she hoped the others would believe.

 

Once more checking her map, she made her way to the coliseum.  Taking a deep breath, she raised her head and approached the door stallion.  Determination was written on her face as well as in her pose.

 

 

"Greetings," she announced.  "I am here for the tournament, what is required of me to be accepted?"

Snowstorm seemed to be ignoring Sederia's pain, though he likely just didn't notice it because he was engrossed in his own complaints. "I don't care about honoring my family, I haven't seen them in years." He said, surprisingly pronouncing all his words correctly, although speaking quite slowly. He failed to mention just how many years that had been, and the fact that his immediate family had been several hundred strong of uncivilized, winged imps, but that wasn't the kind of information he disclosed often.

 

"I deserve to be famous." He declared as he waved to get another drink. "That opportunity was taken from me."

By dodging to the left, Jade avoided most of the attack. However, Cumulus had been aiming at the left side of her body and the knife managed to scrape across her skin, making a shallow cut. Her counter attack connected with the center of his back, increasing his forward momentum and making him fly past her and tumble onto the ground. An audible crack was heard as his left wing snapped at a right angle when it crashed against an exposed rock.

 

He rolled onto his rump and switched his dagger to his left hoof so he could use his right hoof to pop the broken bone back into place. This left him momentarily vulnerable on the ground.

An orange mare with light red hair had exited the train with her. The unicorn had a noticeable bounce to her step and a small saddle bag that couldn't have been carrying very much in the way of luggage. She seemed to be following the crystal pony, but that was only because the two of them were heading to the same destination. The colosseum.

 

She pepped up when she heard that the mare was trying to sign up and started to hastily fashion a referee badge that she pulled out of her saddle bag onto her puffy chest right out there in the open. She also pulled out a microphone from her bag even though it wasn't yet hooked up to any speaker system and held it close to her mouth as if it was turned on. With a half twirl, she moved into Carnelian's view and spoke with a peppy, showmare's voice. "How exciting! I'm willing to bet my left ear that you're gonna' be my first job!" She declared. There was something off about her canter, like the innocence in her demeanor was genuine, but also misleading.

 

She moved the non-functioning mic up to her Carnelian's mouth before she got an answer to her question. "Why don't you tell us a little about yourself?" She asked with a cutesy grin.

Carnelian resisted the urge to call her guards to drag this lunatic away.  Not only did she not have an escort, but as another competitor, any fight with her would most likely grow ugly.  No, she needed to know who she was up against before she threw any punches.  Lunatic or not, she was not disgracing herself on the first day.

 

 

Instead, she cracked a disarming smile and gently pushed the microphone away.  "I appreciate your enthusiasm, dear, but I'm in a bit of a hurry."  Her gaze returned once more to the pony at the gate, waiting for his response.

Jade grunted as she felt the sharp sting on the side of her face. instinctively putting a hoof over the cut.

 

The audible crack made her wince a bit - the sound of bones breaking never sat right by her, even in adulthood after many tough fights under her figurative belt.

 

Though, she spotted an opening when he began trying to pop his broken wing back into place. Wasting no more time, she sped toward the downed pegasus and aimed a kick toward his gut.

He was sent back with another loud crack likely coming from his ribs and he lay back, flat on the ground with his wings spread. And then he stayed there, seemingly still conscious, but not moving for an uncomfortable amount of time.

 

"Um... master Tricis, what are the odds of a demon being a complete pushover?" Feather asked, not sure what to make of what he was seeing.

 

"I'm not calling the fight yet." Tricis stated.

Relief washed through her body as she saw his hoof moving, but she vowed to herself to never do that again. What would Master Xiang think if he found out she had unnecessarily killed somepony?

A low volume chuckle came from the lying pony. Then a spurt of blood came out of his mouth which must have cleared his throat, making Cumulus laugh much louder. He pulled the strange purple sphere from it's compartment and held it close to his mouth as he began to sit back up with the sound of cracking bones. One of his eyes was completely bloodshot as he looked directly into Jade and began to inhale. A purple steam began to emanate from the orb which was sucked into his mouth, then the steam swelled around him and shrouded him in a cloud of purple smoke. She could hear a cackle from within in a much deeper, more intimidating voice. A looming presence was felt that hadn't been there before, sending shivers down Feather's spine.

 

"Congratulations, girl. You've defeated one of the weakest bodies I've collected." It said, "Yours will make a suitable replacement for sure." It added before the smoke cleared. What she saw was a gigantic pony that was one of the largest equine she had ever seen, easily much larger than cumulus. The creature had no coat, and a raggedy red mane and tail were the only hair on his body. His skin was a sickening green, with purple blood vessels clearly seen behind his skin, giving him a spider-web pattern all across his body and pulsating muscles.

She shook her head to focus herself, and hardened her pose, ready to fight this massive pony.

"Above my comprehension!?" Snowstorm asked in a loud, angry tone, very clearly insulted. As he said the word 'comprehension' his face briefly contorted, showing two sets of fangs, a short set of horns, and slitted pupils instead of circular ones, but it went by so fast in the poorly lit bar that it might not have even been noticed before his face returned to the normal, pretty colt look.

 

"Try me. I've been involved in 'difficult to comprehend' operations since before your mother was born!" It seemed Snowstorm was still a bit drunk for revealing so much about his nature that he normally kept secret.

"Of course I'm just here for the same reason you all are. But you could be an added bonus." The demon said, still being vague about what he meant.

 

"Hideous creature! Tricis will never train you!" Feather declared with zeal.

 

"Don't put words in my mouth, boy. Of course I'll train him if he wins." Tricis said after blowing a bit of smoke from her cigarette.

"Hideous creature! Tricis will never train you!" Feather declared with zeal.

 

"Don't put words in my mouth, boy. Of course I'll train him if he wins." Tricis said after blowing a bit of smoke from her cigarette.

 

"WHAT!?" Feather exclaimed.

 

Jade swallowed once again, but kept her composure a bit better this time. She was being judged, even now, and she had to prove herself worthy.

 

But she wasn't just fighting for Tricis's respect and tutelage now - from the look of it, she was also fighting for her life.

 

She couldn't give up now. What would Tricis think? Or Feather? Even worse, what would her Master think?

He very clearly wanted to be in on a new operation after his previous mercenary group had disbanded. However, he seemed to wildly misinterpret what the mare had said about heartache. "Then I'll be the one to make a proposal. We go outside the city, no arena officials involved, and find out what each other is capable without this talk. And then you can find out if I'm really not worth your time."

Still distressed by what Tricis had said, feather interjected, "Master-"

"I already told all of you that I would train whoever wins this tournament regardless of any moral shortcomings." Tricis stated.

 

"But how can you say that!?" Feather demanded, starting to sound angry. "With your training, who knows how many he could kill? Their blood will be on your-"

 

"I'm sorry if you've built me up on a pedestal, but I'm not here to take any sort of moral high ground." Tricis interrupted. Her the conversation seemed to have put the fight on a hold all together. "Maybe I don't want to train him, but if he's the strongest one here, then he's the only student I can accept. If I let my life end without passing my knowledge onto a successor, my entire life's work will be gone and no good will ever come of my knowledge again, and I'm just too damn selfish to let that happen! If my techniques have to be used by a demon for a short time, then so be it!"

 

The demon, who had yet to say his true name, started to chuckle darkly at that. "A stirring speech for sure. Such articulate skills for such a withered old hag!" He declared, not even looking at Jade for the moment.

Jade's ears lowered again as she overheard Tricis's comments. If this demon defeated her, the world may be put in danger. There was more to stake now than just Master Tricis's teachings.

 

She bared her teeth in a snarl at the demon's comment, and in his moment of letting his guard down, she spread her wings and sped up toward him.

 

She aimed a kick to his temple, where she would darkly whisper in his ear, "At least that 'withered old hag' can fight."

Hadn't expected that. Ivory was knocked off the patch of air by the force of the kick, being tossed off and down onto the ground a few feet away. She immediately rolled to her feet, and groaned. Pain was something new as well; not unbearable, but not exactly a fun time either. Best to stay away from it.

 

She began to channel magic through the air; vibrations so powerful, they caused the air around her to shimmer, as if she were producing a heat haze. When she finished, she sent it all directly down into the ground around her, slamming the surface of the ground with raw force. A blast wave spread out from her body outward at the impact, a dome of solid energy expanding outward, towards Ice Blizzard.

"Whenever you're ready. Wouldn't want to rush you, and risk having the designs come out faulty, now would we?" Surprisingly, there wasn't an ounce of malice or threat in Nightingale's voice. She was instead laid back, with the only indication of activity being her eyes and ears, which were constantly alerting her to everything that was going on inside the room. Could never be too careful, after all.

 

"Besides... i'd rather take my time on this one. A chance like this doesn't come around more than once."

Celestia nodded once in approval at Chrysalis' complicity, then slipped into a deep sense of thought, mulling the situation over. "As of currently, an attempt to generate artificial love hasn't even been talked about. Nor would we be sure where to begin..." She paused, discarding that thought immediately, as well as the one proceeding it. Feeding off ponies was not a solution that was practical in any way, for too many reasons to count.

 

Her brain continued to hum through options, counting them off one by one, until she came to one that actually seemed to glimmer in the darkness. She looked up. "There is a possible solution, though it carries no small amount of risk, and a large sense of compromise, between both ponies, and changelings. And us." Her eyes drew in a sense of serious, as if the sun itself had just gone out in her eyes. The room seemed to drop a degree. "I must warn you about this option beforehand, and advise you that you take it with all seriousness. For if it does go in a way unexpected, it is unlikely that we will ever be within ground to come to terms like this, ever again." She let out a sigh, dropping the expression, and the lights returned. "It is also unlikely that I will be allowed to remain ruler, at that point in time. A critical loss for us both, as it were."

Ice rolled to the ground to crouch after he had kicked her. From there, he stumbled when the wave was produced, and started to think. What would be the best course of action... ​"...!" ​Ice then jumped into the nearby river to avoid the heat wave completely, and rose back up with a fish in his mouth. He spit it out, ​"Salmon. Love this with a baked potato. Nice moves by the way."

The kick landed, hitting the demon square in his temple. His neck didn't bend and his skin didn't bruise. Her momentum and strength amounted to nothing despite the direct hit. It felt more like she was hitting a brick wall than a flesh creature.

 

With one sweeping  motion, he smacked her in the chest, flinging her away from him with tremendous force.

 

"I already told you your attacks aren't infused with any spirit power." He taunted as he loomed over her. As if he was only toying with her, he didn't follow up with his attack, giving her time to recover from his strike. "You have a great body, but you don't know how to use it." He commented as he retrieved the mysterious orb from it's pocket again. "Every time I kill someone, The Orb of Mni captures their body's memories. I named the orb after myself, you see. The name I've taken on in this realm is Mni, if you must know the name of your killer." He turned his attention to the glistening orb. "Their souls pass on to wherever they go intact, but the orb keeps a copy of their memories and their body for me to use. I can transform into any pony I've killed and use their abilities and strength whenever I want. You were right about one thing. Tricis can fight. Even as an old prune, I can't defeat her, so I need her to train me if I want her powers, but as for you..." He said, starting to trail off before he turned directly to Jade, horns and sharp teeth jetting out in a horrific expression. "I'm going to kill you and use your sword power to kill Feather Weave!"

 

Mni started to chuckle in his deep, demonic roar before a rock struck him on the side of the head. He turned to see that it was thrown by Tricis.

 

"Would you kindly shut the hell up?" She barked, "I am LITERALLY dying of old age while you talk!"

Snowstorm started to chuckle. "Got somewhere to be in a hurry? I meant we could do it right now." He said as she started to leave.
