For those out there who have made the journey through time and space to try your hand at stopping the mighty power of Lavos, this thread is for you and all those wishing to embark on the journey for the first time. May your trials through time be wondrous and may you not be fooled by what you see, and find the true path. Remember, time is filled with different paths that you may take, and as a result, you have the choice to choose what kind of heroes you will be.

What is Chrono Trigger?

Chrono Trigger is a J-RPG that was developed by Squaresoft (who then would become Square Enix) in 1995 on the Super Nintendo. If you're from Europe you probably never saw it until 2009 when it got re-released on the DS as the game never saw its way outside of NA and Japan on its original releases. It is available on many platforms these days though. The characters were designed by Dragonball Z creator Akira Toriyama with the story developed partially by his input with the creator of Final Fantasy Yuji Horii.

The game focuses around a young man named Crono whose child hood inventor friend, Lucca and him run into a mysterious girl named Marle. When Lucca is testing out her teleport pods for the first time, Marle volunteers to be the test subject, but is sent back in time to the year 600AD. When Crono and Lucca rescue her, they are teleported to the future year of 2300AD where they discover that the planet has been completely destroyed by a mysterious creature named Lavos. They then embark on a quest across time to try and stop the mighty creature from destroying the world in the future.

Chrono Trigger was very innovative when it came out. It was the first game to introduce a New Game+ mode where the played could play again using their save file from a previous playthrough and keep their levels and equipment.  It also did not use random encounters for battles. Instead for the most part, the player can see any monsters on the map and choose to avoid them or engage them. There is no transition to battle mode, players are instantly enter a fight and exit a fight upon encounters. The game also features 13 unique endings depending upon when the player chooses to fight Lavos.

How Can I Play the Game?

Chrono Trigger is available on multiple platforms these days. Here is a definitive list of every platform the game is available on:

  • SNES
  • Playstation 1
  • PSN Store
  • Wii Virtual Console
  • i-mode phones (Japan only)
  • iOS (Requires iOS 9+)
  • Android (Requires 2.2+)
  • Nintendo DS

What is the Best Version to Play?

This has been a debate for years. Many people will tell you that the only true "best version" is the original on the SNES. However in recent years it has been mostly accepted that the best version of the game is the Nintendo DS version for it adds all the content from the other versions without gimping the game, and even adds new content. However it's very subjective as to which version is the "best", but here is a list of tiers that I have composed with explanations as to why (this will not include the i-mode simply because it's only available in Japan and so few people have played that version).

Tier 1: iOS - The iOS version of the game is arguably the worst. While it brings some of the features from the DS version, it leaves out the cutscenes, the graphics are fuzzy and the controls are not optimized for mobile devices. To top this off, iOS does not compress the game at all, so it takes up almost 700MB on your device. Also the game always seems to require the latest iOS whenever you update.

Tier 2: Android - Android is only slightly better for the fact that it takes up less space, and doesn't require the latest android. Other than that though it's almost identical to the iOS version.

Tier 3 - Playstation 1/PSN Store - While the PS1 (and PSN because it's just a port of the game) added the cutscenes to the game many despise its incredible load times. Entering and exiting battles takes a good 4-5 seconds longer, as does going to the options screens and moving from one screen to another.

Tier 4 - SNES, and Wii Virtual Console - Many believe the original (and the Virtual console version obviously because it's the same game) are the best because they are optimized well, and play nicely. While they lack the cutscenes of the PS1 version, they are a solid version.

Tier 5 - Nintendo DS - By far the definitive version. It includes redesigned menus and some graphics to be optimized for the DS, a better translation, additional weapons, areas and a whole new boss. It also comes with the cutscenes from the PS1 version and even a sort of multi-player aspect in monster training.

Where Can I Get the Game?

Well obviously depending on which version you want will depend on how much you spend. Tracking down an original SNES cartridge is pricey, but luckily if you have a Wii or Wii U you can buy it off of the virtual console store for next to nothing. The cheapest versions are pretty much going to be the iOS and Android versions, but here is a list of places you can get the game:

Android $9.99

iOS $9.99

SNES $99.99 (currently)

PS1 $19.27  (Currently)

PSN $9.99 (Will play on PSP, PSVita and PS3)

Virtual Console $8.00 (Will play on the Wii and Wii U)

DS $24.26 (Currently)

Please note that prices are subject to change. Please do not ask for emulator or ROM links as it violates the rules of this site.

Can I Post About the Chrono Cross Sequel?

Yes! You may discuss the sequel, and even the spin off game "Radical Dreamers". You may even discuss the long rumored third installment "Chrono Break" if you like. You may even discuss the popular fan-made sequel if you desire. All things Chrono Trigger are welcome in this thread.

I havent beat the game yet but I LOVE that frog of justice <3

Forewarning, I won't spoil anything, but Frog getting his revenge may have detrimental effects on your end game party. I won't say how, but pass on the chance for revenge and you'll be thankful you did.

Chrono Trigger! My favorite game of all time! I absolutely adore every single thing about this game, the battle system, the characters and story, the music, the visuals, everything is phenomenal. I'm currently writing a very long, in depth review of the game. Also, anyone who's playing for the first time; post about your playthrough here, if you so want to! I'd love to hear about a first time player's experience.

I'm gonna talk about my favorite parts of the game (big spoilers in the, well, spoiler tag)

My favorite part of the game is definitely 12,000 B.C.. Yeah, I know it's everyone's favorite part, but come on, it's amazing. Zeal is both enchanting in it's majesty, and tragic in it's downfall. And how the Enlightened Ones come to be equals with the Earthnound Ones...man, I love all of it. Also, Corridors Of Time. I don't have to say anything else.

I also really like 600 A.D., particularly the second visit, with getting the Masamune and facing off with Magus. Just so cool and climactic...

So, yeah, I really, really, really love this game. Like, maybe a little too much. I haven't played Cross yet, but alas, I've had a lot of it spoiled.

Y'know, I've been on this site for almost ten years and I've never had a proper signature. Ain't that something?

You are not alone there. I've played it on every platform.

My favorite part was definitely all the future parts. I just loved how they handled that environment, very emotional, very foreboding.

I'll probably end up buying the PS1 version soon. I have the VC version, but digital copies are inherently inferior in every possible way, soooo yeah. Gr8 game tho.

Your patience will be tested. :P

Yeah, I like the future a lot, too. I don't usually like post apocalyptic settings, but I really love what they did there it really felt desolate and hopeless. Probably tied with 600 A.D. for my second favorite era.

My least favorite era is probably prehistoric times, (65,000,000 B.C.) though even that has a primitive, primal emotion about it that I like a lot. I just thought the environments were kinda boring, though it does have one of my favorite boss fights in the game, Black Tyranno.
