How hooves work.

Because of how low the resolution the animation is and how far away our view of them is- we cannot really see what they actually do with their hooves in order to manipulate everything like fingers do.

 

They can pick things up, manipulate things like rarity to make birds nests and use a hammer and hold things by what I am guessing is their version of grabbign something with the space just above, or below the hoof.

 

 

Plus, they are not the same ponies we have. Their physiology is much different, which means their bone structure is also much differnet, especially with their much shorter faces and vocal muscles.

 

So, lets ponder this for a bit. How do you think hooves work? I think there are more flexible parts to the hoof than what normal hores have that allow them to fold or squeeze either parts of it or think of bending your wrist, they do something somewhat similar and can do that to grab onto stuff.

 

As for strings, I think they play the banjo and guitar like applejack does by just using their hoof as a guitar pick.

IMO, the technical name for it is "tactile telekinesis".  Think of it as being able to make their hooves selectively sticky.  As to "how effective is this?", it seems to vary widely.  Octavia is good enough to play the cello, Apple Bloom has trouble holding a pencil.  (At least, I recall seeing her holding one in her mouth to write)

 

This probably means a higher rate of disease, because they put things in their mouth.  A HIE might not like touching things like door knobs.  Also, if you like to eat don't watch the cook make dinner.

I would point out, Mr. Cake did not brush his teeth afterwards before delivering a food order.  The reason there is no Health Inspector is because the poor pony died of shock.  You REALLY don't want to touch the door knobs.

 

As to typing, not a problem.  You just need bigger keys.  This means either fewer keys or a bigger board.  + all non unicorns are essentially 2 finger typists.

My headcanon is that every pony can cast magic, not just unicorns. The unicorn's horn increases the range and power of magic, but other ponies can channel weak, short-range spells through their hooves (Horns and hooves are both made from the same substance). This means that they can use a weak telekinesis spell to pick up small objects.

 

You'll note that earth and pegasus pony magic that we know of is cast through the hooves: earth ponies can make plants grow where they step, and pegasi can manipulate clouds. So this additional small magic power would not be too much of a stretch.
