Introduction

We're in the era of Armour and Magic.

Hammer of War or Staff of Destruction.

A world without much of the ownership we see in our world today.

Very much a wild frontier, with death round every corner.

Demons scour the lands of the world.

Warriors and Mages, train to fight these Demons.

They travel all over this planet.

Fighting together or alone.

Only the smart and strong survive.

Are you a Demon Hunter?

Information

Pretty much the world, and anything related to that countries past.

This is set in a medieval era, with some mythical applications.

You can start your story out anywhere in the world, but the  location will have to be in Europe.

You can have a Warrior, from say, China, but he would have to travel to Europe.

The story may arc, in the future, to other continents, but the bulk is done in Europe.

Where ever your "home base" in Europe is.

You cannot be an Alicorn, Alicorns are reserved for powerful leaders only (non-playable).

Age: 18

Gender: Male
Race: Earth Pony-Dragon Hybrid

This opened his cell for his escape, his right wing was sadly damaged in the process. He was unable to fly, he was also never taught to fly, as he spent most his time being stared at through a cage, chained up. He has giant claws, that can rip through a pony like butter. Thank you, and the rules are at least one post every two to three days. You will be contacted via PM if you're away for longer than three days, at this point we'll wait for a reply, and if nothing your character will be cut out. Nothing too OP, everything within balance, everything within challenge. Lets keep it interesting and keep people having fun and creating fun adventures together.

so if I can limit an alicorns power it would be okay?

Your Alicorn would have to be at a pretty dumb Ai level of potential. But this can improve the longer you're roleplaying. As you get more experienced and deadly with time. So basically you're starting from level 1 up, like any RPG game. No player is automatically skilled, veteraned or masterful.

The setting sounds most interesting, and judging by the quality of what I found in a brief read through some of your stuff, I won't be disappointed by that aspect of this RP either. But, being as I am, I cannot withhold the need to prod and poke a little first (no implying of perverted acts intended).

1. Expand a little on the overall setting, please. Basically, all European geography stays in place, together with locations names and such? What about history, both past and "present"? Will the rulers' names match? Can we expect factual historical events to occur while playing? If so, what is the approximate year that should be expected? (Note that the mythological part of the setting is of no concern in regards to this question.)

2. What about race conversion? Are all people basically ponies? Or are certain nations mostly unicorns or something of the sort? How about the other races? I get the feeling zebra would be akin to a Maur here, but what about griffons? Dragons?

3. In a medieval setting we cannot jump over the topic of religion. Any changes to actual history in this field?

4. By initially setting the characters anywhere in Europe, I have to wonder whether there is intended to be a thorough grouping of the participants or if the adventures will play out individually/in small groups, as certain players meet here and there?

5. You mentioned levels in one of your posts and that is something I have to probe too. Is there any system you intend to use in regards to determining the outcome of actions and skirmishes/battles (which, I assume, are of considerable, if not central importance in the RP)?

In list form, because lists are cool and they help organize thoughts. I might add more if something else comes to mind.

That's no problem, prod away, it'll only help improve the roleplay.

And the setting is basically based around real medieval Europe, not really following the same history line. But we can take inspiration from the actual events if it works well into the roleplay. So don't be afraid to not be historically correct, you can have some free will in how things transpire.

The races are pretty much just mixed breeds of unicorn, pegasus and earth pony. Other races such as griffins, dragons and yaks etc... Will be more tailored to specific geographical places, but are not trapped to only on location of birth. So you could have, a dragon from Germany or a Yak from the Ottoman Empire. But Alicorns are a no go area, they are only for the Leaders of kingdoms or empires. Every powerful entity with control over a vast amount of land, is lead by an Alicorn (Italy, Germany, Britain, France and Baltic States.) And hopefully more with due time.

Hopefully we start off on the small scale, with small quests here and there in our respected starting zones. But eventually we can, when we feel we want to, come across one another. How that is done, is completely up to you, and how it goes down, depends on how you decide to react. But generally Demon Hunters stick together, and help each other to achieve their goal. Often, Demon Hunters posse up to make the Hunt easier and allow them to go after bigger hunts, hunts that cannot be done alone. Some Demon Hunters might decide that the prize is to be all for them, and back stab you by leaving you in the dirt. Then a rivalry is created between the two characters. Which can create a lot of drama, when they meet again, but with different friends, or friends stuck in the middle having to choose between the two or resolve their issues. However you choose to dynamic your character.

Cool. Reminds me of the setting for Mage Knight.

I'll repeat this one, as it's rather important to me:

5. You mentioned levels in one of your posts and that is something I have to probe too. Is there any system you intend to use in regards to determining the outcome of actions and skirmishes/battles (which, I assume, are of considerable, if not central importance in the RP)?

(Edited in: Actually, let me put it clearer: is there to be any dice-rolling, or stat system used in the aforementioned cases? Or will this be the purest form of forum-based RP, entirely dependent on the actions described and DM's will?)

Also, here's a few things I missed:

6. It is declared that the characters are to be hunting demons, yet nowhere in anyone's story does it state they already have any experience in such practice. I deduce the RP will either have the characters learn how to enter this profession -- maybe even learn that there is something like a demon? Or is an extent of knowledge thereof acceptable?

7. How many players do you expect to entertain, and when to launch? This is not say I'm going to hurry you, but if I do decide to join, I'll need to find a longer moment to create an entrant.

8. (just reserving space for a few more things that will likely come to mind while I'm at school tomorrow)

It's based purely on ones actions in the roleplay.

Demons have always been apart of this world, some demons are small, some are big and powerful. It's a common thing in this world that the people must deal with. So it's normal that these warriors know how to kill. Or just have the basic function of "kill or be killed". So a lot of these warriors journeys and experiences would have probably led them to fight their fair share of "common demons". Nothing on the scale of taking out nests, spawns, mothers, fathers, big boys or what not.

Details of launch are not ready yet.

Okay, here we go.

Name: Oleg Haraldson

Age: 25

Gender: Stallion

Race: Unicorn -- but do read on

Class: Bruiser with a preference for barehoof melee, who won't shirk away from a shield and short sword either, though

Additional Information:

Backstory - TL;DR version

Having been attacked by a demon as a foal, Oleg lost almost all he had in life, along with his horn. His life was saved by a mysterious golden-coated pegasus whose name was Holmgang the Dane, or Wotangeirr. Oleg has devoted all his life since then to training and becoming capable of journeying to Denmark and taking up Holmgang's profession.

Backstory - for those who appreciate a block of text

Whenever presented with a variety of observable people, everyone will invariably zero in on the somehow disfigured person. Explainable perhaps by the evolutionary need to identify potential sources of danger, as that which is different strikes as unknown, and thus unpredictable. Or it might be the contrary: unending curiosity, desire to see something new and original, expand one's horizons. Even realizing fully well it would be perceived as rude, it is a challenge of will to look away from such personae.

The statement is no less true in crowded spaces, and the nameless little tavern squeezed snugly into the crummy mass of buildings constituting the main port of Aldeigja surely was one. As is the usual in the establishments of this nature, especially with the natural draw of the major trade routes beginning there, the simply decorated interior was packed full of "interesting" people. Languages from around the world mixed to create a constant hum filling the room and the drab, menacing clientele was hard at work, conquering the owner's stores of beverages, more often than not eyeing everyone around them suspiciously. Nonetheless, the dimly-lit space presented a perfect opportunity for observation.

In accordance with the opening statement, however, a pony sitting at one of the tables drew much more attention than any other person. Oh, certainly, scars and disfigurement aplenty could be spotted amongst the drinking, most of whom had clearly seen battle on more than one occasion. Scars, a missing ear here or there, bandaged legs... all that seemed to be the norm here at the beginning of the trade routes leading all the way to Constantinople and the East. But the pony in question was very obviously missing a much more unusual body part: his horn. The blackened, jagged remains sticking out of the unkempt mass of his blonde hair looked gruesome, several irregular spires surrounding a central cavity were all that was left of what must have been a horn matching the pony's rusty coat in color, but now was mostly black, streaked through with veins of violet so dark it barely stood out.

"Na zdravie!" the unicorn in question yelled cheerfully in unison with the two other ponies who shared his table, the group clinking their small glasses together and downing the contents in single gulps. Then, the mangled-horned pony leaned back in his chair and glanced with interest at the pair of warriors across from him. "So, what brings you to Rus, tovarishche? Judging by your outlook I'd wager you're not here to settle down, but rather to seek adventure. If you intend to go down the Volga, I believe I know a trader who would gladly hire a little more muscle for his next expedition."

"Volga?" one of the questioned, a lanky, grayish pegasus, laughed shortly, casting a sideways glance at his companion. "We're come all the way from Norway to live the Varangian Dream."

The last pony sitting at the table, this one a unicorn as well, nodded at that. "The Guard always seeks for more recruits. I'm surprised you aren't on your way there as well," he added, looking approvingly at the musculature showing under the other unicorn's skin.

"I'm not much for buttlicking," he replied, flexing a foreleg absently and bringing into view the armor covering it. Whereas the rest of his gear was fairly standard, his shin guards were a once-in-a-lifetime sight. From top to bottom, the surface of each of them alternated between flat and protruding, likening them to grotesque ribcages. To make matters even more interesting, the colors of particular ribs weren't all matched, as though they have been randomly coated with various metals. And in place of one, two holes opened at the sides of the pony's leg. "Also, I'm not too fond of the Greeks, and that place is swarming with the zherebtsyobi," a spit to the side accompanied the last statement.

The second unicorn shook his head with a laugh. "I haven't yet heard anyone refer to a well-paying, respectable position in the center of the world thus, but have it your way. More place'n glory for us, am I right?", he asked, punching the pegasus' arm to accent the question.

"Yeah," the second warrior agreed with his own chuckle. "Also, there is a hole in your freakish armor, Greekhater," he pointed to the stallion's leg, currently stretched to grab the bottle from the center of their table and pour another round. At that remark, the crippled unicorn glanced at his leg and sighed.

"Did I lose Gory Igor's helmet again?" he wondered, filling the glasses, then looked at the floor around the table and leaned down with a triumphant 'aha!'. When he sat back up, in his hoof there was a horseshoe, of all things. Grabbing his glass with the free hoof, the rusty stallion toasted the other two and they drank. Only then was the nature of the object questioned.

The pegasus' brow was raised as he enunciated slowly, "Funny, I heard you say 'helmet'. Must be my lacking knowledge of Slavic." He looked as though there were more quips he had to share, but they were put to rest as the horseshoe was inserted into the empty space in the shin guard with a quiet click, blending perfectly with the other protruding ridges.

"Granted, it is not exactly in the same shape as when I'd scooped his head out of it, but can you blame me? It would be extremely difficult to carry all these memorabilia with me," the stallion explained with an amused expression. "Anyway, it's been nice to meet you two. Good luck with the Emperor. I have to go, my ship should be almost ready to draw anchor," with that, the stallion rose from his seat and grabbed his glass. Noticing it was empty, he reached for the bottle instead and took a deep swig from it, then clicked his tongue contently, picked up his saddlebags from the floor and began to push through the crowd towards the exit.

Only then did the pegasus yell after him, "What's your name, man?" But no answer came, as the unicorn had already disappeared in the crowd.

***

The stroll to where his ship docked allowed for a moment of quiet meditation. As usual, none of the stereotypes he had been hearing throughout his life proved true. Yes, ponies talked a little differently, brewed their own alcohol and had their local legends, but at the core, a pony up north was no different from those dwelling in the south. Except Greeks, of course, those weirdos had to be a worldwide phenomenon. The two greenhorns (well, one greenwing, but let’s not go into such detail) he had met by chance were bound to be disappointed when the Varangian Guard proved to be nothing more than an army unit like every other. At least the pay was good, though. And the stallions looked as though they were up to the challenge of service there, so. Good luck to them.

He smirked, thinking how they also had the common sense not to poke at the matter of his ruined horn immediately. Even though judging by their expressions and too-often sneaked glances, they itched to do it, and infernally so. He doubted he would have told them the truth, had they asked. But, as it usually happened when the topic was breached, even by himself, the memories started flooding his mind…

Thick, cold darkness. A fear piercing so deep even breathing required a herculean effort. And silence so absolute the frenzied beating of his racing heart seemed to echo throughout the caves. But beyond all the senses, there was also that dreadful presence. It had driven him far already and there was no sign of it relenting. The frail body of a foal was quickly burning through the last reserves of energy left in his body, but the panic didn’t allow him to stop or think. He could light his way with his horn, but he was too terrified at the prospect of seeing just what this malevolent force he was sensing could look like. And suddenly… he knew.

Being strongly held by the horn several feet off the floor, he gazed into the eyes of the darkness that hunted for him. And it gazed back. There was no sight he could ever remember more vividly, and yet any attempt at describing the monstrous entity was doomed to fail. There were simply no words that could be attached to it. The creature rasped something in an ancient language, the sound of the words itself seeming to screw something into his brain and make his skin burn.

Only then, on the edge of certain death, did he spot a second entity present itself… but this one came as the most welcome surprise he had ever experienced. The memories of his features have long since become blurred in the memories, as though the sight of the dark creature overwhelmed the entire remembrance of that day. But the golden yellow coat of the pegasus who came to help him was unforgettable. In the darkness of the cave, it almost gleamed as he embattled the demon plaguing the defenseless foal.

Slowly but surely, the skirmish was won by the pegasus, but just as the fatal blow was about to be dealt, the demon vaporized from the spot only to reappear behind the foal and yell something in this same horrible voice, so strong this time that it made the knees of even the brave pegasus go limp. It was only much later that the phrase was translated to him as “What I cannot take, I destroy”. Then everything faded as he his horn emanated a paralyzing, piercing pain and he fell into an infinite abyss of agony.

He came to more than a week later to find out most of what made up his life gone away one way or the other. Thus began the arduous adventure of his life… with nothing to drive him forwards but the memory of a golden pegasus knight and his skill in driving away the darkness. Although the hero had not been present at his awakening, at least he left behind a name, and with it, a purpose. Holmgang the Dane, also known as Wotangeirr.

And now, almost exactly fifteen years later, he was finally on his way to find his hero, his inspiration. All his past adventures seemed to piece together into a closed chapter, of a good preparation for the upcoming better part of his life.

“Oy, Haraldson!” the brisk voice from behind him snapped the unicorn out of his reverie. He looked in its direction to realize he had walked right past the Brynhilda, a Danish ship returning home, whose captain had agreed to fare him for the cost of his work and some cash. “Leave dreaming to the night and reverie to the philosophers. Come on, shake a hoof, there’s still much cargo to be loaded!”

“Aye aye,” the unicorn saluted. Denmark, here I come.

Equipment carried

Mostly, things so typical that listing them doesn't even make much sense: a short sword, an armor combining leather and plate elements, some coin, traveler's food rations etc.

One extraordinary item, however, are Oleg's shin guards, the Memories. If the description above wasn't enough to visualize them, imagine a simplified shin guard as three fourths of an empty cylinder. Now imagine seven horseshoes, and let them lie on top of the cylinder, as though it was a tunnel and the horseshoes were ceiling supports. Good so far? Now make the horseshoes too slim to be slipped onto the cylinder, so you have to cut vertical holes for them... Ugh. Maybe a picture will help a tad?

The little one in the corner is a front view, where the black line represents the surface of the shinguard and the red shape is the horseshoe interlocking with it.

sig-4325438.memories_zpsurkmt9lc.png

Should this be necessary, I shall try to explain this better. Anyway...

The shin guards are called Memories, and the "horseshoes" inserted into them are Remembrances. Several of the Remembrances are melted and reforged keepsakes of past events Oleg has gone through - one of these being the victory over Gory Igor. I will not go into too much detail and list all their stories here. But several of the Remembrances are just cold iron shapes with no connection to the past, to be replaced as necessary at later occasions. Their main purpose is as part of the armor, but they also have two other major uses: a deadly short-range thrown weapon... and the best damn weights you could imagine. Just imagine walking -- and fighting -- with something this heavy over your arms - er, forelegs.

Miscellaneous remarks:

 - Oleg's history is much richer than the parts depicted. But this is not a fanfiction, it's an RP. Let his past be explored as the story unfolds.

 - He has fought some lesser demons -- that's what the cold iron of blank Remembrances is for -- but what attacked him in his youth was something of a higher caliber.

 - I apologize in advance for the unforgivable mangling of Russian, but it just fits so well for a Varyag to toss some Russian into his speech and all I have to work with is the internet. I am *not* going to learn Russian just to use it in this way.

 - Oleg is capable of the simplest magic, such as telekinesis or illumination, but they cost him MUCH more than any other unicorn, he has to focus completely, and he generally dislikes it.

 - All of the above is subject to change if need be. I may also expand on any part of anything if necessary.

 - I am tempted to write some useless mambo-jumbo here just to break the 11k characters mark in a single post. But that would be morally wrong, what with artificially fattening the contents of this otherwise thought-through post... Nonetheless, well, here it is. Yippie-kay-yay, eleven thousand :D

 - Edited in: I have nothing against Greeks, they're a great nation. Just in case someone might feel offended by Oleg's outlook on them.

Hi.

I'll enter Inn Keep

His link is in my signature .

Class: Tank, slow, heavy hitter. Some chemistry knowledge: potions

Other notes: in this RP specifically, he'll be managing an inn.... Somewhere where the heroes gather. I live in Asia and know nothing of Europe.

He can provide information from gossip at his inn, provide lodging and food, etc.

Can be convinced to leave the Inn to help out the heroes.

He used to be whatever counts as a 'warrior' in this universe. In his younger days, he and his party took down a large demon together.
