Kyubi entered the building via the air vent and noticed that the two ponies from outside were already in. "Well, that was pointless. I guess I might as well help you two, then." She said. "I have a katana, so at least I have something to protect myself with." The bat pony then began to patrol the area.

Rosemary nearly forgot about the windows. She heaved a board up to block one, struggling with the weight but eventually making it. The pale unicorn grabbed two more boards and blocked a few more windows, and made sure there weren't any gaps. Shaking from effort, she gave in and used her magic to lift a shelf, securing it at yet another window. Rosemary relied a little too heavily on magic, and wasn't used to just simply doing things with her hooves.

"Can y'all quit just walkin' around and actually help?" said Redwood to the bat pony who had just come in from the roof.

The convenience store was small, and really there wasn't much to patrol.

Redwood grabbed a board and secured another window with it. It looked like they would be done fairly soon.

As the sun descended, Downtrod swore mentally.  He wasn't going to make it to the building the bat pony had landed on before the night had set in. There was however, a building that looked largely untouched about halfway between where he was and where the stranger had gone, so he adjusted his trajectory and headed there.  As he drew nearer, he could see that it was a quaint little bakery, and, nonplussed about the fact that any food inside would be past its expiry, the earth pony let himself imagine having a full stomach for the night.  His meager provisions had kept him fed, but only just, and he'd been scavenging for weeks.  As the sun dipped lower, he reached the deserted bakery and peered inside.  A Biter was drawing near in his peripheral that he'd have to deal with before going inside, but the interior of the building seemed clear.

Definitely wanting to get inside now, he turned, rushing the nearby zombie and quickly assassinating it with his blade before returning and trying the door.  It wasn't locked, and creaked open with ease.  His heart leaping, Downtrod slipped inside and pushed the door shut, locking it behind him.  He did a quick sweep of the main room and grinned in delight.  Muffins and bagels and all manner of other baked goods lined the shelves still, and the famished pony wasted no time wolfing down as much as he could.  He then filled his bag with as many pastries as it was capable of carrying, and took a swig of water from the canteen he'd acquired in the earlier days.  It was a miracle this place hadn't been severely looted in all this time, and it made Downtrod wonder if there was something dangerous in the back.

Resting only for a few moments, he steeled himself to investigate.

Kyubi gave a slight shrug and began to board up any external doors that they probably wouldn't need. They could always pry the boards off, but the last thing any of them needed was a zombie sneaking in and catching them by surprise. "So, where are you two from?" She asked as she worked in an attempt to pass the time.

@@Acnologia @,

"Ah'm from out Appleoosa ways, so ah'm a long way from home," said Redwood. "Ah got discharged from duty about a month before th' outbreak, and ah've just been wanderin' and tryin' to survive since then. How about y'all? Ah ain't really seen many bat ponies, well, .anywhere."

Rosemary remained silent, she wasn't much of a talker. As she boarded up excess doors and windows with her hooves, she listened for sounds of zombies. Unsettled, she continued boarding up potential entrances for zombies. "Do you think we'll last the night?" she asked, slightly freaking out when she heard the sound of wood jammed up a door.

The earthy hued stallion tried the door into the back and found it open.  Cautiously, he stepped inside, drawing his knife as he did so.  Holding the hilt firmly with his teeth, Downtrod stole into the darkness, wishing it were a little more well lit in here.  He cocked his head and swiveled his ear at a sound.

Thunk. Thunk.  Thunk.

...

Thunk.  Thunk. Thunk. Thunk.

There was definitely one of them back here somewhere, and from the sound of it, the Biter's hooves were being slammed repeatedly against one of the doors along the left side of the hall.  He decided to check each door on both sides as he went, just to be safe.  The first door on his left led to a broom closet.  It was empty, save for janitorial supplies, so he shut it back and moved to the door across the hall.  It was a small storage room, filled with flour and other baking materials. A door inside this room led to the kitchen.  It must be the second door on the right then.  The kitchen had a freezer in the back, a single oven, and a deep fryer within, but little else.  The earth pony exited back into the hallway and took the second door on the left.  As he opened it, he found a Biter--well, the upper half of one, anyway--resting against the door.  The husk stared up at him through milky eyes, gargling its own blood and stamping at the floor desperately with its hooves.  It was so deteriorated that he couldn't even guess as to whether it had been a mare or a stallion, young or old, and its cheeks were sunken in so far that the skin may as well not have still been there.

It was the most pathetic thing he'd ever seen.  Swiftly and silently, Downtrod put the thing out of its misery and began to explore the office he'd found himself in.

The light of the sun has finally vanished and the moon was in full bloom at this night. All the zombies that were outside stopped suddenly. Nothing was moving in the night. Then, all of a sudden, each and every single one let out a blood curdling scream that filled the silence of the night. Their eyes turned to a red hue and they all began to act more feral. The bared their teeth and and listened for anything that could prove to be their next meal. With that small little thing in what was left of any mind, they took off with renowned vigor and are now the hunters.

The ruckus outside sent chills down the stallion's spine, and he hastily abandoned the small office, returning to the main room of the bakery. He couldn't see anything in the streets and definitely didn't want to, but knew enough to know that this area wasn't safe, as the undead could break through the window in the night. Seeing nothing to board up the windows with, Downtrod returned to the staff hallway in the back and tried the last door on the right. It led to a stairwell that ascended to what appeared to be a loft. It was deserted and he was left to assume that the Biter he'd killed had been the only one living here, which was furthered by the single bed in the loft. Having securely closed all the doors behind him, the earth pony did what he could to settle in for the night.

"Listen, if we can stay calm and stay quiet, we can ride out th' night in here. It's probably a good idea to stay away from th' windows and doors too. Just to be safe, at least one of us should keep watch while th' others sleep. We'll switch off every three hours. Got it?"

Kyubi nodded slightly and figured that talking would help pass the time. "Before all of this, I lived in Stalliongrad." She said. "I can't really see that well, so I adapted. I've been trying to find a safe place to live ever since." The bat pony could hear the zombies outside and placed a good on her katana. "I'll take the first watch, if it's ok with you two."

"Thanks," Rosemary said to Kyubi. "I hadn't slept in moons." Rosemary hadn't slept much since the start of the zombie apocalypse, usually averaging only two hours per day. She desperately wanted to, but the earlier moons of living on her own led her to believe that she must always be alert in order to escape zombies.

"Alright, y'all can take th' first watch and ah'll take th' second," said Redwood before she laid down and propped her head up on a nearby container. She pulled her bandana over her eyes and fell asleep relatively easily. If she could sleep in war zones, she could sleep here.

Rosemary spotted a spot between some propped up boards. Sighing, she silently trotted toward it, and settled into the small space. Rosemary tried to get comfortable, but it was impossible. First of all, there wasn't enough space. Second, dreams of zombies have been haunting her for days. The pale unicorn curled up, and tried to fall asleep, but she was restless.

Kyubi sighed as she sat on a chair, her katana close to her. For now, all she could hear was silence, and she preferred it that way. To much noise gave her a headache. "I guess I'll just wake one of them in a few hours." She thought to herself. The bat pony then moved under a window so as not to be seen from the outside.

Restless, Rosemary woke up and glanced around. No zombies, good. She was scared of being killed alive. Rosemary assumed that Kyubi was okay with the watch, but wondered if she was dead. The pale unicorn's ears pricked up, eyes sharp, alert for any signs of zombies. The scent of fear hung in the air around Rosemary, as she feared for the worst.
