Melancholyiguana 2 July 6, 2016 Share July 6, 2016 We can't change the past. We can only learn from it. It has spurred a lot of good fiction. I know of two creepypastas that cover it. Its quite chilling but I don't think we'll find any giant mutant creatures there. On the flip side, isn't it starting to become more habitable? It may even get to that point in our lifetimes
Pripyat Pony 2,608 July 6, 2016 Share July 6, 2016 @@Melancholyiguana, Well, there are people living there, but they are all elderly people who either refused to evacuate or who returned after the evacuation. Cept for Chernobyl itself where there are workers living nearby to maintain the checkpoints and sarcophagus. All these people are more than likely suffering radiation poisoning tho. Dash In Black 18 July 6, 2016 Share July 6, 2016 I must admit, Chernobyl has always fascinated me too, and along with the utter tragedy it was, the Fukushima incident fascinates me as well... I agree with Tarnish and others, nuclear power/energy deserve the utmost respect and knowledge in handling, but I feel in the right hands, it might be one of the things the Infinite/All-That-Is gave us, along with nutritious (vitamin c/bananas/etc), optical (micro/macroscopic viewing), and untold fields we had discovered and have yet to. And along with those who had worked at/around, and continue to, at Chernobyl, I sincerely thank those who had/continue to work at Fukushima. Let us not condemn a given technology because of humanity's mishandling, let us rather stand on the shoulders of giants, and see where we can go as a species. boiteporte 591 July 9, 2016 Share July 9, 2016 All these people are more than likely suffering radiation poisoning tho. Well, the workers there know what to do and what not to do in order NOT to get radiation poisoning. The main problem is caesium-137, one of the by-products of radiation. It emits alpha radiation. Caesium-137 contaminated the whole food chain. But, it is harmless as long as it stays outside your body. So you would be fine as long as you don't go licking the floor or eating local food. Unfortunately, a lot of people eat local food because they have no money to buy imported products. This severely reduces their life expectancy. If you can't afford to buy imported food, then you are going to get radiation poisoning by eating local produce, but you don't really have a choice. Also, for the people who go on tours around Pripyat, the radiation risk is very small as long as you heed your tour guide's warnings to not walk on grass or moss (it absorbs a lot of radiation) and not to take anything away with you. Or lick anything. Here's an interesting link on radiation levels in Pripyat and the surrounding areas: http://chernobylgallery.com/chernobyl-disaster/radiation-levels/ Oh, and if anypony here is planning a visit? Lexamena 391 July 9, 2016 Share July 9, 2016 It interests me yes. Any terrible tragedy interests me especially when a series of things had to occur for the tragedy to take place. It's fascinating to me to learn about a well documented incident and to learn what each contributing factor was. Another aspect that interests me is the physical and emotional effects on the victims of the tragedies. Especially if it involves some kind of poisoning, whether it be radiation, or some type of chemical or other substances, and it effects on the human body. It's amazing to me how far we have come- in terms of how generations ago poisons or deadly substances were advertised as medications etc, and using poisons in ways that were never thought as harmful. And then thinking about today and what are we using right now that will be clearly regarded as a poison and deadly substance in 50 years? (Sugar in foods will be or should be one. Should be right now, but I digress) Chernobyl is one of those tragedies that amazes me in that it was a series of errors that created the perfect circumstances for disaster.
