critique wanted Need Help! What's wrong with these?

@@Swinton, I think the core path to fixing your issues with these two is to practice on anatomic structure, and blocking out the body's form. I don't know if you want me to go into specifics, but areas like the first pony's head and limbs could be improved by studying how pony muzzles/skulls are structured (or just drawn) when down-turned, or by studying how equine limbs are jointed respectively~

The second image seems a good bit more solid, but the shading does seem a bit flat (the light source doesn't seem to flow around a 3D shape so much as hint at there 'being' a light source), and the perspective seems a little inconsistent for things like the stool, table, glass, and pony.

If any of this is unclear, I'm so sorry, and feel free to ask for clarification. I tried to not nitpick and look at the overall whole or a few specific areas to focus on. :rarity: Many points seem like you understand a good bit of how a pony looks, how to convey a good style, and how a pony is proportioned (which is awesome), but you might need some practice with anatomy and working with things with respect to the 3rd dimension. ;) And, the simple fact that you're looking for critique and self-evaluating your drawings is extremely promising for your growth as an artist.

Could you offer some advice the angle of the head of the first one? It looked alright in sketch but I have problem shading to give a sense of dimension a lot of time and are the eyes too low and the horn at the wrong angle?

Also for the second one, I'm not sure how the perspective could be fixed. I have trouble with interaction between the pony and the table especially, like where the hoof should touch the table. And the cup is giving me woe, not sure how it should be drawn to make it not look like it blended into the table.

I think something goes wrong with the sizes. See, the ponies see like they've eaten too much before.

Try to COPY some pony fanarts and tutorials so that they see as similar as possible on paper.

Without showing it to the public, of course.

Thus, you can learn draw ponies with correct sizes. So remember, if you once draw an object size to size and with proportions, your mind can better understand how it SHOULD be.

So how the learning to draw is working.

However I can't tell what you could do with shadings because I have troubles with them myself.

I feel like the shading is off and the anatomy/posing may be wonky, some advice would be really helpful.

Hi swinton!

I did a redline for you i hope it helps!

Your anatomny is going very well although a little squishing of the skeleton will happen until you find your style; ((My ponies were once very chubby and tall!!))

The only think that looked "wrong" was his face, i felt as tho the muzzle is a little lost in the first picture

Remember to use circles and squares to build up the face during the sketch, I cant draw anything without using them :P

Thanks so much! That was really helpful. I had trouble building up anatomy for this because I wasn't sure how to position the head. (And I'm normally quite bad at anatomy and angles)
