So he can get rid of any mare that seems like a shallow golddigger that only wants to marry him for the status or title, while letting them think they're the ones that chose this. If he simply told mares to leave him alone, he'd risk offending politician ones and having less fun.

He did not act mean or lame. He acted shallow, self absorbed and stuck up, like about 90% of the rest of the guests.

 

No, I would say he really is just that way and not acting at all. The comics showed him as intelligent and a fantastic diplomat, and he was not nearly as awful as he was in the TBNE. Still, he was an annoying individual.
