Spike with wings

one thing I commonly see from the fandom is the question "why doesn't Spike have wings?" Funny, though, I did a bit of research and found out that Spike of a previous generation did, in fact, have wings. And was big enough to ride on by Megan. Though, it was only on the European cover of "Rescue at Midnight Castle", and not actually in the show. 

 

so looking at this version of Spike with wings, doesn't it seem reasonable now for him to somehow sprout them in g4? (surely, if Twilight can give wings to her pony friends, then she can set Spike up with some temporary ones, right?)

From what dragon aging seems to be like, I'd say his wings are at least a few in-show years off and probably another couple of years for them to be useful. Not against the idea, it doesn't seem like the writers view it as any sort of priority yet.

Not all dragons have wings, so spike might have been more of drake type or something else other than winged dragon.

Spike never had wings. I don't know if he had them in the original comics, but he never had wings in his first two incarnations and neither did his toy. Some dragons don't have them period.

I just assumed he was a type of dragon that just doesn't have wings.
