I can't be bothered to go into details, but here's the story.

The Celestial Toymaker AKA the Mandarin is the Crystal Guardian, the guardian of dream and illusion.

He hates the Doctor simply because he can beat him (Well, survive, really) at his games.

The six guardians are higher beings that are part of existence, embodiments of what keeps the universe together.

Thy are:

-The White Guardian, embodiment of Light and Order;

-The Black Guardian, embodiment of Darkness and Chaos;

-The Crystal Guardian, embodiment of Illusion and Dream, basically fantasy;

-The Azure Guardian, embodiment of Balance;

-The Golden Guardian, embodiment of Light and Death;

-The Red Guardian, embodiment of Justice and Truth.

 

The last one is actually the Doctor after his thirteenth regeneration, his death, but because the guardians will make him forever existent, he will have always been the Red Guardian.

He's the physical embodiment of dreams.

It's a bit difficult to explain.

Basically, kill him, is like you just killed dreams all together.

 

And he's tried to play his deadly games with the Doctor numerous times, always failing to kill him.

Wich really annoys him.
