[Ultimate Disscussion] Samurai Jack [Entire Series] [SPOILERS]

The Cynical Lone Wolf

Spoiler

The ending. It made me really sad. Actually made me tear up a little bit. I thought, just once, everything was going to go Jack's way. It's something I wanted, having been a viewer since the first episode aired in 2001.

However, after being tricked into thinking Jack found that happy ending he worked so hard for, I get a punch to the gut. Honestly, I think the delay before Ashi faded made it that much worse for me.
Blah. I don't know if I agree with the decision made quite yet. Bittersweet. Need time to digest it.

Great show. The first 4 seasons were amazing, with tons of gorgeous art, awesome action scenes, and some great comedy too. The 5th season started out really strong and had some great moments as well. Easily in my top 10 favorite shows.

As for the ending...Spoilers, duh.

I kind of hated that ending. It just wasn't satisfying in the least. Aku goes down so easily for starters, that was just such an anticlimatic death for him. There was no real sense of victory in seeing Jack finally defeat him here, it was just like I blinked and he was gone...Wow? And then Ashi's ceasing to exist. Seriously? That didn't happen until the wedding? I knew it was coming with the slow walk, and then when it happened I didn't feel very sad, just kind of rolled my eyes. Then she's just like "Without Aku, I never existed", and that's it? She's basically "Dying" from her point of view in her love's arms, why not tell him you love him or something...Then it's just resolved with that ladybug scene, yeah, okay. I'm sure for Jack that was a while later, but from the audience's point of view that was like 10 seconds later, I felt nothing.

Also, yeah. This means all the people Jack helped in the future and all his friends like the Scotsman also no longer exist too. That's depressing, and why I didn't want this ending. I would have preferred them staying in the future and defeating Aku there, with Jack accepting he can't go back. But that didn't happen, and that's fine, Jack going back to the past was always his goal, and while it's not the ending I wanted I could have accepted it, but it just felt so rushed and anticlimatic and unsatisfying. Jack didn't even give a final goodbye to the people in the future or anything.

Also, the Paradox stuff here is just...huge. If Ashi doesn't exist who sent Jack back to the past? Also, Aku still sent Jack to the future and then Jack and Ashi killed him right after, so...No idea how that works, the show didn't even bother trying to cover it up or explain it.[/Spoilers]

So, yeah. Great show, but that ending rang incredibly hollow for me.

Reminds me of how the Future Trunks Saga (Dragon Ball Super) ended... except a lot less frustrating and shark-jumpy, thankfully.

And at least Ashi and all those other future people will get to be born an alternate, Aku-free timeline, so... yay?

I doubt most or even any of them will be born at all. Aku taking over the world effected basically everything, if he doesn't do that history is totally different. Logically, pretty much everyone Jack met in the future will probably never exist at all. Especially not Ashi since she's made from Aku. Jack basically just erased them all.

She and the other Daughters will presumably be fathered by someone else (maybe with some help from Odin, Ra, and Vishnu) in the new future.

Won't happen if Ashi's mom doesn't exist, or if Ashi's mom doesn't worship any gods, or even if somehow that did happen she might not even have the same number of daughters, or they might not all be daughters, or they might be totally different daughters that are nothing at all like the Aku ones. It feels like the chances of everything somehow playing out to let Ashi and her sisters exist still are pretty slim. People like the Scotsman or the Jump Good guy and his monkey tribe or the talking dogs are pretty likely to not exist either. The future is probably filled almost entirely with new people than what Aku's future had.

Unless all of these characters exist by some means of "Destiny" that makes them all exist no matter the change to the timeline, which I suppose is possible, but if so I wish they would have showed that.

Hence why it should've been a full hour, IMO.

Agreed. This isn't my ideal ending but I would have been far happier with it if they had taken the time to build everything up and go into more detail with things. As it is I just feel hollow about the whole thing, it just kind of...happened.

Granted, the battle in the original future was still awesome.

Between Jack's allies and Aku? Indeed, that was one of the better parts. Doesn't feel like it totally makes up for the lack of a real final showdown between Jack and Aku though.

I'm just gonna hold on to this topic since i'm not even at S5 yet

(edited)

I guess I should give my thoughts on season 5 seeing how I just finished the finale episode a few minutes ago.

Spoiler

I thought the season was enjoyable and started out strong, but things kinda hit a slump during episode 8 which was a pretty weak episode that shoehorned a rushed romance between Jack and Ashi instead of setting up for the finale, lead to the finale episode feeling a bit rushed, even if I did enjoy the last two episodes, and thought that the final episode was a decent way to end the series, even if the final battle between Jack and Aku was a little underwhelming.  Although Ashi fighting Aku using his own powers was pretty cool.

The season would have benefited from having a few more episodes instead of just being 10 episodes long, and having the finale be a double length episode, and not bothering to include the romance between Jack and Ashi which was pretty much pointless in the end.

But despite that, I had a nice time watching the season despite my few problems I had with it.

Commenting in a thread mainly discussing the finale of Samurai Jack and you haven't reached S5 yet huh :dash: ?

ACTUAL SPOILERS IN THE FOLLOWING TAG

Well, to be honest, I've only watched a handful of episodes pre S5 as that was my period of hardly touching the TV (other than videogames). I've practically skipped all the way to S5 when it came, but it was a blast. I know Samurai Jack had all this stilysh violence and action, but also had an emphasis in the animation and the art. While this season was darker, it never lost it's style, even the the upscaled violence.

The finale, was it the grand finale that we were hopping for? Not quite, not because of the bittersweet ending of Twilight I mean: Ashi's banishment because of the timeline (I actually think that's the highest point of the finale, but because of the battle. I recognize many of those characters, and it was heartfelt that they came to aid Jack, but it was too quick-paced, focusing too much in so little time, which can be a bit unforgiving, because that was built-up for over a decade in real life

Spoiler

It sad it end that friends Jack make didn't exist. It kind of ended sadly cos he lost his love and also friends he make. Is it good idea for Jack to kill Aku in the future and stay in future with his love and friends he makes? Sure in battle some of his ailles/friends got killed whille fight Aku but some still live. But what if he stay in future? he give memorment to his parents and who ever dies fight Aku and also fix the world. Well that my opition. Sad to see it end.
