Luna's cutie mark

I was wondering about Luna's cutie mark as it seems to consist of the moon and the black marks around it, as we see in a royal problem, because celestia gets this black mark, which is weird considering that most cutie marks are only a 1 or 3 small marks.

Anyone got any ideas about what it represents and why it's there?

It was just the moon in Twilight's Kingdom, since only that part disappeared when Luna gave up her magic. It was probably an artistic decision to also include the black part in A Royal Problem because if only the white moon was used you wouldn't be able to see it on Celestia's also white coat.

And the black marks just represent a night sky backdrop for the moon.

Lauren probably thought just a moon would have been too simplistic and boring (the gen 4 cutie marks are more complex than in other gens, so it would've been inconsistent design). I personally really like Luna's cutie mark design, but I doubt there's anything special or plot relevant to it. Unless they decide to ad something to it in the future, that is.

I love mlp and all, but shows like this always get to a point where you have to begin making new stuff up. In our case, it's been happening for a while now, so inconsistencies are bound to show up here and there. What I'm trying to say is, you shouldn't expect things to correlate and add up all the time, and you shouldn't try to squeeze milk out of a rock.  >_>

All that being said, I would be interested in seeing whatever crazy theories people come up with in the comments. Just wanted to address the logic side of things so we can get to that faster.

The darkness in her cutie mark could be one of those happy accidents - perhaps it began as cosmetic, then all of the sudden, it becomes a symbol of Luna's 'dark side'. While I agree it's probably not intentionally significant, it actually is because it fits her so well.
