I dunno... It's all just so confusing. And this sensory overload ain't helping either. How does regular ponies live all their lives with everything just crashing at you like this?

Her mother shook her head, "You've done enough, more than enough, for this family. You don't owe anyone anything more than you've already given."

She sighed, "The Consul came by, while you were gone, to explain to us what it would mean if you became the next Grey Mare. While it's far from an enviable position... it's not the worst possible fate. I'm sure Epsilon can handle herself. Further, the Consul mentioned that, if you didn't become the Grey Mare, it'd be up to you whether you wanted to fully commit to Vengeance or not. He can find someone else to clean up the world, and you can rest."

She looked pleading, "Please, rest. Let us carry you for a change."

He hasn't gone and tried baking again in recent days, right? Don't want you getting poisoned this close to term.

She chuckled, "Believe it or not, he's gotten better at it over the years, but you're right. We've been especially careful for the twins. You don't need to worry about that, beyond making sure you'll be easily found this week in case they come unexpectedly."

With that, Her father and Arcade came back in the room, Arcade looked a bit shaken, but not torn down. Her father looked satisfied, "Well Null, you seem to have picked a good one, not many like that still around, you two are lucky to have found each other."

Her mother perked up when they entered, "Ah, you must be Arcade? I was told quite a bit about you when I was doing the check ups on the others. I..." Her expression fell a bit, "I'm sorry... for what you suffered through. I know how cruel some of the researchers can be, Celestia's Academics especially."

He held up a hoof to stop her, shaking his head, "It's not your fault, I should be thanking you after all, your daughter being the one who saved us from that place. Without her help... we likely would not have survived much longer." He went over to Null, nuzzling her to cover him whispering into her ear, "Your dad can be real scary, and I've literally died before."

Actually, could I ask how it were? When Null found you? I didn't get a lot of details about that day. Like, how did Arcade and her run into one another?

Elef looked away as the others seemed to confer silently as to who should speak before Elef spoke up, "She... she found me first, actually. In the spring cave. She saved me from the monster that killed Rare. So I pointer her in the right direction to find Arcade while I took care of Rare's body."

Ardee continued, "The facility was connected to a natural cave system via the vents. Mistress had covered one of the cave paths with an illusion so neither us nor anyone else could find the exit. She didn't want us wandering out of the safety of the facility, nor did she want anything wandering in. She didn't know that the facility already had monsters inside. There had been ten of us when we first arrived, when Mistress had to leave us, all things considered we did well to still be seven of us in the end. Arcade was suspicious when he first saw her, but recognized that Null being there meant there was a way out, and not a moment too soon. Had we been in there even another day we'd likely have all been killed."

The pony didn't even get to say much more than gurgling sounds of pain, as blood splattered across the stage, as well as Hizu, who simply stood with a widening smile

Rasputin's eyes saw a very different scene, he was back on the battlefield, nearing the end of his mission with Bravo Luna Unity to capture a reserve of Minostralium for Celestia. He saw the Scout's wing get cut clean off by the mantis-like scythe of a Minotaur golem defender, the blood splattering over him and the Demo, who was a zebra like Hizu, as they pushed their advance.

Unconsciously he had drawn his knives out, and gone invisible, the Spy moving into action.

7 hours ago, Blitz Boom said:

And then, *Poof*, it exploded into fog.

Confused, and with a racing pulse, he'd look around, and soon enough, would gaze upon the stage, where the now one piece Hizu stood, and looked down upon the others, whilst the changeling he had taken up on stage, were patting himself down, majorly confused, and seemingly checking if he were still in one piece.

Rasputin was breathing heavily, having passed through the creature when he had tried to stab at it, nearly catching Bruce by accident with the knife. It took him a bit to return to his senses, and drop his invisibility on the opposite side of the audience row from where he had been sitting previously, his knives still out. He looked genuinely scared as he scanned the room before relaxing slightly, sheathing his knives, and straightening his appearance.

"The fog, a hallucinogen I assume?" He shook his head, "I'm not a fan of drugging the audience, for one, the results can be far too varied, and extreme. With all due respect to your craft, is there any way you could tone back the extent of your performance? I'm sure by now you've seen the effect graphic displays can have on veterans of war, many have witnessed their comrades being torn apart by the spawn in not too dissimilar a manner, myself included. It wouldn't do to trigger such traumatic memories. Someone could get hurt."

He turned to Bling, "Still, ultimately it is not my call to make."

He can find someone else to clean up the world, and you can rest."

She looked pleading, "Please, rest. Let us carry you for a change."

"I don't know how to do that."

Null meant it too. Even when she had been focusing mostly on her woodworking, in the quiet weeks before things started to take charge again, she had been restless in a sense. Feeling like there were something she had to take care of. Such as the case had been with Grey Mane. An unresolved thread that had to be dealt with, but sadly, not the only one. And that were the thought that kept nagging her. The thought of all those things, and beings, that she had met, that would prove a danger not just to her family, but to others in general.

"I've tried, mom. I really did, but I've seen so much ugliness out there. Had to keep fighting, just so Void and I would be able to survive. I've seen what kind of creatures are out there, and the spawn can't have taken all of them.

Maybe they'll never come here, but what if they did? Or the new foals eventually grow up, and travel, where they could run into them? They're supposed to have a safe world to grow up in, and that can't happen if no one's willing to fight for it.

I get that he could find another, but... They'd have a lot more to lose. I'm already broken, mom. Even this creature in my head, the Judge, and the Consul, ain't sure I can ever get fixed. So why shouldn't it be me, instead of having someone who have a chance left, take the fall for this?

But Arcade is... He's complicating my thoughts. Used to be I felt like I could just kill Grey Mane, get back here to tell it, and then be on my way. A burden off of your shoulders, and out in the world to try and do something good. Now, I don't know anymore... He makes me feel a little less hopeless. Like I actually deserve some semblance of a happy life, instead of just keep throwing myself into fights, and seeing how long it'll be before I don't get out of one alive."

She'd turn her gaze away from her mother again, and let out a raspy sigh, as she tried to not cry. Though with what she were about to say, she felt like a tear might still find its way o her face somehow.

" But I'm the fighter. I'm supposed to keep our family safe. It's all I've ever been good at, and it... It h-helps me believe I can pay off a little, of what I owe Void. After what I took from her."

She'd retell the tale of how the two ponies had wanted to adopt Void, yet had no interest in her. And as a result, she had thrown the letter in the fire, and made the two of them run away from the town. A potential life for her sister, full of love and hope, but she had been too much of a coward, to give up herself, for her sisters happiness back then. It was no longer the case, but what did that matter? It were long since over, and there were nothing she could do to change it now.

She'd finish with a bit of time left, before the others would get into the room, as it were a pretty short tale. So her mother would have a chance to respond. To this, as well as the other things, as Null shed a layer more, to reveal further how broken she were, and how little she thought she were actually worth. Only way she didn't feel like a burden on them most of the time, where when she tried to protect them.

Only good thing she'd ever done for them, in her own mind, as she had deep, emotional scars to work with. Void's potential adoption were one thing, but her believing her parents had died, because of her, had been a far longer, more deep rooted torment for her to deal with. And she still hadn't. Not by a long shot. She still blamed herself, for them getting caught, because she had been clumsy and slowed them down. Maybe if they had gotten her instead, they would've left them, and Void alone. What made her worth more than them?

Without her help... we likely would not have survived much longer." He went over to Null, nuzzling her to cover him whispering into her ear, "Your dad can be real scary, and I've literally died before."

Null would wander straight over, and embrace Arcade with one leg, and her head planted on his shoulder. In case he asked why, she'd just mumble that she needed this right now. After a few minutes of this, she'd be able to get herself away from him again, and get back into the conversations. There were a few things to cover it sounded like, and she were feeling a little better again now. So she'd try to get through them. Starting with whispering back to what Arcade just whispered to her, as he had nuzzled her, during their embrace.

"Don't be afraid of him. Dad's harmless."

Probably wasn't the truth, but Null couldn't be afraid of him. He wasn't some scary researcher, with an intimidating presence, to her. He were her father. The stallion whom she had felt the most connected to in her life, just as Void had their mother, and whom she adored, and somewhat glorified. He just couldn't be scary in her mind, and if she saw his intimidating side, it would probably cause her to get more confused, than scared.

"Since it sounds like all cards are on the table here, I'm gonna be frank here, and tell you two to stop planning a wedding. I saw that look in your eyes, dad. Your mind's going places, it ain't supposed to. We've only been on one date. Even if... I-Its too early, alright?

Same goes for asking about grandfoals. Go after Void with that first. She's acting funny, like she's hiding something from me, and I can't think what else she'd feel like I shouldn't hear about... Probably since the last one I found chasing after her, I hammered through a wall."

Granted, it had been a flimsy wall, but the point still stood. Only thing she could imagine Void would hide from her, were someone else entering her life, as she were probably afraid of what her big sister would do to him. Which were frankly fair, as Null had been pretty rude towards every single one, of those who had tried to get too close to her sister. Though in fairness, the majority of those, had also quickly just turned out to be horrid little slimeballs, or some trying to lure Void and her into a trap. So it weren't like she wasn't justified in playing the overprotective, older sister card.

Though really, she were saying this to deflect from this topic, as if any of them started talking about Arcade and her having foals, she'd get a visual, and she'd blush up so much that she had to go stand in a corner to hide it.

(Void)

"I'm sorry you had to deal with that, Elef. No one should have to do that kind of thing, with a friend."

It didn't even briefly occur to Void, that the monster in question, whom had killed the foal called Rare, were Elef himself. She just couldn't see that foal that she knew, in a position like that. Even if it had been an accident, which he were clearly still trying to come to terms with, considering his response. He wouldn't be so fidgety, if he felt no remorse, no?

"The two others you lost as well, I'm sorry to hear about too. Even if it's good that she found you before it got worse, it's still a big loss.

Maybe it isn't a good idea to speak too much about that place, and bring up more painful memories. Maybe something better, like... Tell me a story about your mistress. A happy memory, preferably. I'd like to know more about the mare that helped you, from your own perspectives. Please?"

She were curious if the consul had made sure to deal with whatever had been in that facility, yet she did not intend to ask when the foals could hear her. Nor would she poke further to their memories about a place, where they had lost three of their friends. One of which Elef had to hide the body of. They should not have to dwell on traumatic experiences like this.

So instead, she hoped they could tell her a nice story instead, that involved their mistress. One that did not revolve around death and misery.

He turned to Bling, "Still, ultimately it is not my call to make."

"I see I judged wrongly, and came on too strongly. Might I try once more, with lesser force than before?"

"...Alright, I'll be willing to try that. This were uhm... Certainly a specialty act, but if it got less intense, and tuned down a few notches, that'd likely be best. I could see the show possibilities in this sort of thing though, if you can work on intensity depending on age groups, and keep the really intense stuff to scheduled shows, where others had a chance to prepare in advance.

Could you show us something meant for amore of a general audience, and then one for foals?"

Hizu nodded, and would do as he were asked.

The more general performance would be toned down, to instead have him put the pale hoof to the top of his own head, and then move slowly down, unzipping him in the process. His skeleton would wander out from there, and his skin would be risen up by said skeleton, and made to dance around on unseen puppet strings, by the animated, equine skeleton. Then after about a half minute, the skin would be thrown into the cauldron, and from it, would rise up a hoof. Then another, before the floppy skin, now filled with a mint-green fog, would rise its head out of the cauldron, and start to look around on the audience.

After that, it would begin to sing a small tune usually heard around the harvest festivals, in Equestria. All the while, playing along with the tune, on the ribs of the skeleton, which were giving off some rather musical notes, in fairness. It were still macabre, but it were a good deal tamer, and made to be more unrealistic, to ensure it wouldn't be seen as too likely to be real. Despite the look and feels of things.

As for the foal-centric one, he'd get his volunteer back, then suddenly begin to cough and exclaim loudly that he were feeling ill. His body unable to keep up much longer, and as such, he needed to replace some parts, so that he could be healthy.

So slowly, and whilst talking about how these new parts felt just right, he'd grab hold of a part of himself, then his volunteer, and then make a quick switch. No blood, nor guts. Just switching around, like pieces on a puzzle, which looked increasingly absurd, until eventually the heads would be attempted to be swapped, but a *mishandling* would result in them both rolling around on the stage, loudly explaining to the respective bodies where they were, whilst the headless bodies were chasing them around on stage. Again, macabre, but harmless. Even more so than the previous one, as bodily fluids were kept out of this.

"Now this is more like it. Kinda creepy, and more of a niche thing perhaps, but I sure feel the emotions rolling. And they aren't as horrified as before. And it doesn't seem to trigger something. If we can come to an arrangement about the when and what, I think we could make this work, Hizu. Especially soon as Nightmare Night rolls around. I could imagine ud being able to sell out for an all out performance there... Hmm, I'll need time to think about it, but does the terms seem alright to you?

Also, that fog isn't poisonous or anything, right?"

"As I leave the stage, so does the haze. Nothing will linger, to harm or hinder."

The fog were harmless really. It may technically be drugging the audience, but the zebra had not gotten their reputation, by being careless and not knowing how a potion were brewed properly. Hizu might be more specialized than some others, but he still had to learn alchemy to be able to do what he did, and you did not pass with ease, in Zebrica. They had certain standards. A thing which some wholeheartedly cared little for, among other rules, but that is what the rare punishment of banishment might be used for. As well as the more common practice, of pulling their license. And no sane being would deal with an unlicensed alchemist. That were just a recipe for disaster.

Unless you didn't know about the licenses, which did tend to happen outside of Zebrica. The common equine could be so unaware, of things away from their personal bubble.

She spoke softly, "Shhh... it'll be all right. Everything will be okay. We may not know all the answers, but you don't have to figure everything out by yourself. We're a family, and that means we work together, we stick together. Come what may, we'll see it through. Right now, we don't need a fighter. We need a daughter, a sister, a friend."

She pulled back so she could look Null in the eyes, hers were full of love and concern, "Can you do that for us? As long as you try, it'll be enough."

With that she sighed and withdrew, "For what it's worth, I doubt Void would have agreed to go anywhere without you. I'm sure she'd understand. Still, it'll just keep weighing on your conscience until you tell her. You should do that sooner, rather than later."

They seemed to like that idea, thinking a bit among themselves.

Toupé spoke first, "Well, When I was younger, the other researchers said I didn't laugh or smile enough, and Mistress told them there wasn't much for me to laugh or smile about in that place. She gave me her coat that day, this one, and told me that I could be smart and sciency, just like her and Teal, if I wanted to be. I liked that."

Ardee followed up, "She saved my life, convincing the others that I could help if they let me stay with the others."

Elef continued, "She helped me understand that being different didn't mean I don't belong. And that looking like someone doesn't mean I'm the same as them."

Teal was the last to respond, shrugging, "I mean, she was nice to me, and I appreciate everything she did for us, I just don't have a distinct moment like the others do, and that's alright, I can love and appreciate her all the same."

The foals had their own babbling comments to add, just being happy to participate.

Rasputin nodded in agreement with Bling's assessment, having mostly recovered from the earlier incident. "Yes, I think that will be much more fitting. I look forward to seeming more of your tamer shows here."

With that he turned to Bling, "Do we have other performers lined up yet? Or should we put out some feelers in the city for potential talent?"

Null had taken in the hug, and were embracing her mother, until Septicity pulled back. She were a little reluctant to let go of her mother, but she'd let go without a struggle, even if her hooves would show her to have been a little clingy for a moment, before she too pulled back.

"I don't know if I can, mom. But I can try again. Maybe this time, it will work."

She wasn't sure if she could, even with the addition of Arcade in her life, but she'd keep her eyes on her mothers, as she said this. She wouldn't lie to her mothers open face, so this were a word she'd keep. She'd try, lest something happened that'd make her have to shift her perspective, but that were unlikely. Troy was a calm town these days, all things considered. They should be fine. It was all the things outside of Troy that worried her, and it would have to be seen if she could see past that, or it the potential would eat at her, until she felt like she had to go out there, or go crazy.

"There's a lot of things I've never told her. I wanted to protect her. I still do, and it makes it hard to tell her these things. I'll think about it."

This one she'd have to mull over for a time, as it was not just this, but about thirty other things, just off the top of her head, that she could mention. Things she had shielded her from, that she didn't think Void had to hear.

Oh great gods, a distraction. Let it keep going this way, and away from the part where she were thinking of dressed and ridiculously large, dumb looking cakes.

"I don't know if it's that, but I can tell she's hiding someone from me. Void is a poor liar, and that letter seemed meant to be hidden. Something's happening with her, though I guess we can grill her about it later tonight. I doubt she'd last the scrutiny, but we'll see.

And dinner sounds fine. Long as you're not doing it, mom. I might have dad's cooking skills, but you ain't in a position to be moving around. Relax, and we'll try to look at making something that ain't toxic. Arcade, best you come along, I think. You probably have more skills at this than I do."

He were going to have to, or they wouldn't get many hot meals once they'd gotten hitched. What if they had to rely on the fo- Darn it brain, stop it!!!

She'd blush up again, and scurry along. She had no idea what Arcade was gonna be able to do here, but if her dad was smart, and had listened to Void talk about Null and cooking before, he'd let her deal with raw stuff only. So just chop veggies or something like that. Otherwise, she would somehow end up making a tomato soup, that'd have to be registered as a biological weapon.

(Void)

Void had honestly hoped for a little more happy things than what she heard. Of course, having one defend the foals, and ensure they hadn't gotten executed were great, but... Dang, this were pretty messed up. They were gonna have to work extra hard, in making sure that the lot of them got some happier memories to speak about. Something more nice, like being at the beach, and skipping stones, or something else ordinary.

The little ones had the least depressing ones, but in fairness, they were just blabbering along, trying their best to partake. She really, truly envied whomever were lucky enough to get to hear them grow their vocabulary as they grew up, and see them flourish, far from all the things that had hurt all of them for so long.

"She sounds like a fantastic mare. Standing up to her colleagues like that couldn't have been easy, but blessed be that she had the heart and spirit to do so. And curse be those who made life hard for you. None of you deserved anything like that."

She'd take a hoof over, and brush gently against Elef's face with it, whilst a slightly bigger smile, spread on her face. Poor things, all of them. And to think how close it had come, to them ending up dead and alone, somewhere deep beneath the ground... She'd have to hug her sister tightly and thank her on their behalf later, for giving them a chance to experience a kinder life, than what they had been supposed to get. Even if she hadn't been able to save all of them,. *sigh* She could imagine Null felt guilty about that. Her big sister always did, whenever she couldn't save someone, who deserved to be saved. Her tough face wasn't fooling Void when it came to that.

"Maybe I can do something to immortalize her a little for you, until she comes back? It'd take some time to make, but if you can make a nice drawing of her, I can make a mosaic that looks like her, if you'd like? I think she more than deserves to be remembered in her absence, and given a nice place. Wherever you'd want."

Had she been good at statues, she'd have said they could work together on perhaps crafting a statue, but her medium were glass, not stone, so she had to work with what she knew. And it seemed like a nice gesture, to a mare who deserved to be given a depiction, that the foals could look at, and remember her by, until she'd one day return. Which hopefully, she would. She'd like to personally embrace the mare, and thank her from the bottom of her heart, for giving these poor souls a chance at life.

(Changelings)

Hizu nodded, as he got affirmation that there was a place for him here, then held his hoof over the cauldron. He'd mumble a phrase, indecipherable unless you stood right in his face, and then poked a hole in his leg with a small needle. He'd press three droplets of blood out, which would then fall into the cauldron. When the last hit the concoction, the fog would stop pouring out, and what remained in the theater, would begin to dissipate. It'd take about ten minutes, considering the size of the room, but it would clear up. At which point, him and Florence would exchange hoofbumps, over their now shared success. There would be interesting times ahead of them now.

"I have some feelers out, and there's murmurs of some interested parties. But with these two, we'll have about five different acts. It's a good start. And hopefully, the two magicians are gonna come over here quickly, once the next caravan rolls in. They should apparently be pretty good.

I'll get the accountant to work on having them signed in to the system all proper, and work on finding these two a room. Everything's gonna have to be ready for the grand opening. Which also means we need to get hold of a few more. We should probably start with Ace, since he's the closest.

Anything you'd like to say to our new employees first, or should we just get going?"

Arcade, best you come along, I think. You probably have more skills at this than I do.

Arcade looked a bit put on the spot, "I don't know where you'd get that idea, I've spent my whole life up to a week or so ago in science labs of varying quality. I know haw to scavenge, not prepare food. Best I can do is tell you if something's edible."

Regardless he'd follow Null into the kitchen, looking about at what they had, "I mean, most of this looks edible, but I assume you intend to combine things in some way?"

He found and pulled out some bread, "Well, sandwiches are easy, just cut, stack, and serve, you have a preference for what goes on a sandwich? It looks like they've got a good amount of options here."

Sure enough they would find the kitchen well stocked with various ingredients, including small amounts of strange and exotic ingredients, it looked like the pregnancy had given her mother some odd tastes.

They shared a look and nodded, Ardee speaking, "Yeah, I think that would be nice. We'll... we'll do our best to draw her, hopefully you'll be able to make something of it."

They went over to their old drawings, finding their first attempt at drawing her, each of them getting a fresh sheet to try their hoof at drawing a more realistic depiction of her.

While they drew, Vale came over to Void with the foals in tow, distracting them from trying to go over and 'help' the others with their art project, "Sorry I've been rather distant today, with everything that's happened you can understand, I hope, that I'm rather drained. Plus, you remember how I feel about your sister." She sighed, shaking her head, "Still, barring any other surprises, I should be back to normal tomorrow, and we can keep preparing them for the world."

It would take about an hour and a few dozen attempts before they had a depiction that they liked. According to the drawing she was a light pink, almost white, earth pony mare about her parents' age with a blond mane and tail, both done up in a loose bun, her mane bun having a pencil stuck through it, and she had greyish green eyes and a faint smile. They had her wearing her lab coat in the drawing, covering what her mark was.

They would come over to where Void and Vale were, Toupé presenting the drawing, "I hope this is clear enough? We're not very good at drawing yet, though Elef was getting pretty good at the end."

(Changelings)

Rasputin simply shook his head, "I'm not one for speeches, I'll leave motivating and congratulating to you, or a joy changeling. Spite isn't the best emotion to instill in employees anyway."

He would walk along with Bling, "I suppose it's time we broke the news to Ace and Penny, would you rather address them together? or apart? Perhaps I tell one while you tell the other?"

"If you can tell it's edible, you still got a leg up on me. Pretty sure if Void hadn't been a good cook, we'd have starved to death some time back, or I'd given us one too many cases of food poisoning, and we'd have slumped over from that.

Raw stuff's fine. Can't for the life of me figure out how I end up causing everything that's meant to be mixed, into whatever garbage it becomes."

Null would shrug, and move along as they finally made it into the kitchen. Seemed like her dad decided to stay behind and tend to their mother for now, so it were just the two of them here. Oh joy... And here she were hoping her mother wouldn't get poisoned.

"Y'know, might be safer. Not sure what half of these things are though. Always been Void's thing... I'll go ask what sort they'd like. Or if we should just haul stuff on the table, and see what they fancy. From the looks of it,, mom's either experimenting with dishes, or she's getting weird hungers. I hear pregnancies can do that."

Maybe someday she'd figure that o- Stop it, brain! Darn it. Why had her dad put this whole thing in her head, about marriage and everything that came along with it? At this stage, she'd be planning her foals graduation party before she'd go to sleep.

...The second foal. The oldest were gonna be a- Nononono!

She were violently shaking her head, trying to get the thoughts out of there, as she wandered back into the room where her parents were.

"Look my f- We! Are looking at dinner. Don't wanna poison mom, so sandwiches, perhaps? Wanna know what you'd fancy on it, if it were. Or what else to work with, if that ain't doing the trick. But we'd need dad then. Void's literally barred me from using a pot or bad again. Twice."

Void would give Ardee a confident smile. That mare would go far, if she believed in herself. Void felt certain of it. Not putting all the weight of protecting everyone on her back would help too, as she'd just end up being run thin, but everything were a process. Things had to be handled a little by little, and maybe someday soon, she'd figure out how to actually do that, rather than just try and shoulder things with Ardee.

Despite what Vale were saying, she couldn't manage to take the smile off of Void's face, as she saw everyone give it their best, to try and make their mistress justice. Granted, her smile got a little more strained, once Vale went on, but ergh... Overall, she still couldn't take the smile away. Though Void felt a sinking feeling that she might, with how she were going to have to respond to the doe now.

"Then I doubt you'll be back to normal tomorrow. When we have some privacy later, I have something to show you. Something important, and I don't think you'd disagree with that, but... I'm sorry, I just can't show you yet. Not now. I don't want them to be dragged into this. They've dealt with enough today."

Vale could poke and prod as much as she'd like, but Void wouldn't say more about this, and would mostly just look at the younglings, going about their attempt at both making a good picture, and ensuring that a certain pair of troublemakers, didn't come in and make it into abstract art.

"It's beautiful, Toupé. You all did a good job here. May I take it, please? I'll get to work on sketching out how to best make this work in glass, and then get to work on that when I have everything ready. It will probably take a few days though. Maybe more.  But I promise I'll get it done. And then we'll find a nice place to hang it up. Maybe in your room? Have you thought of a place you'd like it to be? "I've pretty much sadi it all to them, for the time being. We'll sort schedules and the like later tonight. I'll send someone over to talk to you about lodging soon, okay?"

Both Hizu and Florence would nod at that, and then start to clean up the stage. There were a fair bit to work on getting around here, and while she waited, Florence figured she may as well stay and help. Though most of the things would just get to a backroom, so it were closer to the stage. Too heavy to haul this around all the time.

"I figure we talk to one of them at a time, just in case Penny miiight try and cause a ruckus. I don't think she will, but best to not risk things. We'll have a chance to introduce them to one another later.

Besides, Ace is closer, and I'm getting really exciting to tell him. I'm sure he's been wondering what we'd end up deciding. Let's see if we can find him."

Her parents were cuddling together on the couch when Null came back in, turning as she addressed them, they nodded, "Sandwiches sound good," her mother said, "Make mine with peanut butter, and potato chips... and a splash of mustard."

Her father mimed gagging at the order, "Daisy, lettuce, and mayo is good for me."

Arcade would have the bread prepared when Null came back with the orders, raising an eyebrow when presented with the ingredients, "Umm... I don't think I know some of those." He sighed, "I'm sure there's plenty of normal things like that that I don't know about the world. If you can find the ingredients for me, I'll do my best to assemble them."

She sighed, "I wish you hadn't brought it up, now I'll be left to worry myself over what you might tell me later, which is clearly not good news."

Ardee stepped in, "I think she asked out of respect. Unlike the academics, she isn't going to take things from us without asking, even if she could, because she respects us," she turned to Void, "Right?"

That revelation seemed to surprise the other young ponies.

They looked around the room, a lit of the good wall space taken up by the mosaics that Void had already put up for them, but there was a good section of the wall left vacant from where they had pulled the beds from to make their group bed, "Could it go over there? So she can watch over us, at least in effigy?"

Rasputin nodded, "Sounds good, I'm sure he won't be difficult to find."

Sure enough they found Ace in his usual spot, organizing workers from the floor manager's office next to the cage. There was a small amount of excitement and anxiety coming off of him when he saw the two of them come in, though he did his best to mask it at least visually, "Something you need boss?"

He sighed, "I'm sure there's plenty of normal things like that that I don't know about the world. If you can find the ingredients for me, I'll do my best to assemble them."

"I'm not big on the culinary side of things, but I know the stuff they were talking about. Pretty simple things, even if mom's sandwich is a little wonky for some. I ain't the one to judge. I've eaten raw lemons, and whatever were left of things in the trash, once I cut the mold and sickly looking parts off of it. Wasn't all bad really."

She had utterly despised the taste of lemons, bitter roots, and the like at the start. Despite what she tried to tell, and show to Void, she had craved something sweet, or savory too. But there were few things they could make use of, and she felt guilty enough over things, that she wanted to make sure that Void got what she wanted to eat, of the things she could get. So she toughened it out, and forced it down.

Over the years, she'd gotten used to the taste, as her taste buds had gotten on board with the idea, and these days, sour and bitter, were some of her more preferred tastes. But man, that first year especially, had been tough at times... Not as tough as the times when they hadn't had a lot - if anything - at all to eat from, and were starving, but still rough.

She didn't show it a lot, but Null were incredibly thankful that they had the sort of stability now, where this wasn't a looming treat anymore. It was a horrible thing to go through, and since she had been through it, she pitied those others who had too. One of the reasons why she couldn't muster resentment for Hive Cheshire, as much as she still had some issues with changelings. They were the sort of creatures who cared about those who were at the bottom of the social order, and saw it as an opportunity to help, instead of just looking at the creatures down there, with contempt, and annoyance.

Had times been different, she might've been around there to help out some, but she had other obligations to do. Though maybe, she could try and help here in Troy? Not just changelings specifically, but like, not all were going about things well. The performers she had to get hold of later, were scraping by, but they were still doing that: Scraping by. Some weren't even that *lucky*, and they could use some help...

She'd ponder this for a bit, as she wandered silently around the kitchen, and gathered up some of the things she'd been asked about, as well as some that she'd like too. Hopefully Arcade would've done so as well, though if not, they could go around soon enough.

She'd get to the table before she snapped out of her thoughts, and started talking again. Sure were a lot of things she had to think about now, and she weren't sure what to make of half of it. She knew what her parents would like her to do, and Void probably too, but what of her? What did she think were best? That were gonna take some time.

"...This here's what we need for theirs. Dad's sandwich is pretty standard, and mom's is pregnancy food. Apparently you get weird food cravings when you're expecting, and she's gonna pop any day now.

This here's what's needed for dads sandwich. This here's for moms. We sort those first, then think of ourselves after, since mom's eating for three. Smell things out, try breaking off a piece here and there to taste it if you want, and see what you think of it, while we go along. Maybe there's something that seems real good to your taste buds among these.

I think I'm gonna go with some sliced lemons and cactus, along with a good helping of pepper flakes, and some sport of habanero butter if I can find it. If I can't, going for mayo. Helps to get it down, with a bit of buttering on it. Remember that when you're assembling your own, alright? Same with dads."

She'd point to the things her dad needed for his pretty basic sandwich, and then at what she needed for moms, as she talked it out. If they worked together on this, it'd go easier, and she'd start her mom's one first, so he could see what order stuff generally should go on it. Even though hers were a good deal weirder. Had a special smell to it as well, once it were assembled, but eh. Like she said, it wasn't her place to judge. She'd eaten fat smellier stuff than this.

"I'm sorry I brought it up. My mind was a little fixated on them. Just look at them go, doing their best to portray their mistress. *sigh* I really hope I get to meet her some day, so I can thank her for saving them.

...And if it helps, the news aren't bad, I think. It's more that it makes things a little more complicated. But I do think it's in a good way."

She probably wasn't helping things further by being cryptic like this, and should have likely just shut her mouth instead of going on. *sigh* No way back now though, right? She had put it out there, and come evening, when the little ones were sleeping, and she could speak with Vale in privacy, they'd see if she agreed. To some extend she might, but Void got a sinking feeling that her immediate reaction would include kicking things. Preferably not her.

That revelation seemed to surprise the other young ponies.

"Of course I wouldn't. Not unless it were something dangerous, like Peal and Piecey finding a loose piece of sharp glass to play with. Anything else, I'd always ask first.

You have rights, just like everyone else. The right to say no, is one of them, and then good creatures should respect that. I would, and so would Vale, Null, and many others. It'd make it kind of hard to make the mosaic from memory alone, but if you wanted to keep your drawing, you should be allowed to.

Don't be afraid we're going to be like them, okay? We won't treat you like that.

Some things though, you're still supposed to do. Like washing your hooves before dinner, going to bed on time, and taking showers. But that's something everyone have to do. And those kind of things, we're not trying to use to control you with. It's just trying to teach you routines, that you'll need when you're ready to be on your own someday.

Please, if you have any sort of questions about this, feel free to ask."

(Changelings)

"Yes. We've talked long about it, and reached a decision about the last two positions we need to fill out.

So, you got the job as general manager of the casino. But we're gonna run a trial period at first, just in case it becomes too much, and you'd prefer to return to being floor manager. Gives us all a chance to see how you'll handle the responsibility, and the pressure. Don't worry about the floor position for now. We got someone in mind that we think can handle that.

Be excited, Ace. You worked hard for this, and frankly you've earned the chance to really show what you got. But don't be afraid to say if it becomes too much, okay? There's no shame in admitting defeat."

She could feel Ace's emotions, even if he either hid them well, or just kept himself well in control. No wonder he ere at least a little nervous though, considering what he had been awaiting an answer for. Hopefully now that he had gotten confirmation, that it were his time to try and shine, he'd ease up, and be happy. Joyful even.

...The thought made her kinda hungry actually. Had she forgotten lunch again? There'd been a lot of paper work today, and she seemed to recall eating at some point. But she might be mixing up the days again. Might be after this, before going to see Penny, they should go get something to eat. Wasn't a whole lot of spite they had gathered up, but the training were paying off well already, and the one they had that thrived on it, beyond Rasputin, were learning. Helped them get a broad spectrum of emotions, though quite honestly, she felt a little surprised at times, about the schadenfreude. She always just sorta assumed it wasn't possible to get an excess of that, but the meager, yet genuine presence of the dark liquid, with the specks of white within, told her otherwise.

They still needed someone to admit that were their favorite though. For some reason, that just hadn't happened yet. But hey, when it did, they were ready. Even if it took until they got in some more from the outside.

Arcade looked less unsure of himself when he saw the ingredients themselves, "Ah, maybe these aren't so unfamiliar after all. I guess I just didn't know the names for these things, when we got sandwiches in the facility they cam pre-assembled."

He was able to assemble the sandwich for her father without issue, making an identical one for himself as it seemed a safe enough combination, especially if a doctor was asking for one. As much reservation he had against academics, he had never known one to ask for something that was harmful towards them.

In Null's search she'd be able to find all the items she wanted, with the exception of habanero butter. All the sandwiches assembled Arcade carried them out to where her parents were, her father having gotten up at some point to set up a table next to the couch so her mother wouldn't need to get up from the couch, as well as a pair of chairs for the two of them to sit across from her parents as they ate.

Her mother smiled as the food was brought in, "Yes, that smells perfect, thank you Arcade." She quickly devoured the first half of the sandwich in the time it took them to sit down, "I know my husband likely gave you the third degree out there, but I didn't get to hear it, so... what do you think of Null?"

Arcade looked contemplative for a moment, not at all embarrassed by the question, "Well, I'd say first of all I have a great deal of respect for her. Not many would be willing to risk their lives the way she did to help others, at least... not many that I've met. I'm grateful that she allowed me to accompany her so that I could repay her for saving my family the way she did, though I doubt I'll ever feel like that debt is fully repaid."

The quartet exchanged a look before Teal asked, "When do you think we'll be ready to go out on our own? Is it a matter of days? Weeks? Months?"

Ace let out a sigh of relief at the news, his emotions matching along with a small amount of growing excitement, "I won't let you down boss, would you like me to start now? Or do you have a specific time you want to do the change-over?"

Rasputin held up a hoof, "Let's get your replacement situated first, then you'll be free to assume your new position. If all goes well you should be able to start tomorrow."

Ace nodded, "I'll get everything ready for them then, make sure they get a much smoother transition than I did when I started. Send them here when they're ready and I'll train them myself."

With that Rasputin would walk out of the office with Bling, "So, shall we break the news to Penny now? Or was there something else you needed to do first?"

"S-Stop grilling my coltfriend."

Null's cheeks went red with embarrassment, at both her parents constant questions towards Arcade, and the compliments that Arcade gave in his response. She didn't know how to deal with compliments all that well, even though she liked hearing them from him.

"And you uh... You don't owe me anything, Arcade. You needed help, and I ain't heartless. I've liked having you around though. It's nice to feel close to someone like this, in a way I haven't before. Ever. No one's gotten to me like you have.

Oh gods that sounded cheesy just stab me..."

She mumbled the last bit to herself, as she - with an even bigger blush spreading across her dark coat - would bite into her sandwich, and look away from all of them. This really wasn't her kind of thing to normally do. She were used to just being angry, or sour in some way, not positively emotional.  Plus, this were all in front of her parents. It were not helping to make it feel less embarrassing.

As for the sandwich, might not have been strong butter, but it was fine. Some mayo, and a few peppers in the mix, and she'd get the sour, and the spicy. A combination that most she talked to, considered to be pretty gross. But eh, what'd she care about their opinions? She liked it, and that was really all that mattered, when she were the one eating it, right?

"...Why is it so much easier to crush a skull, than to talk about feelings? I've got plenty I want to say, but I just don't know how to get it out, alright? Don't make a big deal out of it. It's... It's p-perfectly normal. Probably."

I haven't lost control like that in a long time, so I think you're right to wait for now. Still, that won't stop me from worrying."

"I never said you couldn't handle it, Vale. But you're an emotional doe, and I don't want them to see, or hear, any sort of outbursts that'd come normal to you. It'll just scare them right now. Like it did when Null barged in, out of nowhere. I know you'd never lash out towards them. However, words carry, and they might get nervous if they saw you angry.

If the tables were turned, I'd hope you'd do the same for them, and make sure I wouldn't be around them in a state like that."

Void respected Vale, and didn't think she'd ever be a threat to the younglings. Yet at the same time, they were in a new area, and were still building trust with both of them. It would not bode well then, if they saw Vale in an understandably agitated mood. Just as it wouldn't, if they had seen Void stomp earlier, when she heard the horrible news about Toupé.

Toupé looked a bit hesitant, but asked, "Could, um, could I have it back when you're done?"

"Of course. I'll take good care of it, and return it soon as I've done my own sketch from it, okay? Making a mosaic, I need to think of how to put the glass together, so I'll need to have that ironed out. How about I'll show it to you all before I'm done, when I return this drawing to you, Toupé? I think I might have a frame it can go into as well."

There had been a notice in said frame, back in the day, and the glass had been more or less completely splintered. But making a new one hadn't been an issue, and she had since used that to house a motivational text, to try and keep her going, on more glum days. With the memories and sights of all of these young ponies though, she wasn't going to need that. Might as well put the frame to good use.

The quartet exchanged a look before Teal asked, "When do you think we'll be ready to go out on our own? Is it a matter of days? Weeks? Months?"

"I wish I could tell you, but that's sadly not our decision to make. The Consul need to get a lot of things prepared for it first, and I don't want to make promises about how long it'll take. All I can say, is that I doubt it will only be a few days. You have my word though, that it won't be years. I won't allow that. But right now, Vale and I are waiting for an answer too. Don't worry though. We'll pester him if he tries to drag it on for too long, without a good reason. And we'll try to think of some ways you can still go out and experience things, that's safe until then."

Ace nodded, "I'll get everything ready for them then, make sure they get a much smoother transition than I did when I started. Send them here when they're ready and I'll train them myself."

"I'll make sure to do that, Ace. Try getting yourself in the right set of mind, and get yourself acquainted with the tools of your trade, before we open up again, alright? Soon it'll be a bright new day for the Top Suite, and we'll need to be in tip top shape.

That being said, don't forget to celebrate a little bit. You're allowed to be happy, long as it doesn't go to the extreme. But I trust you know how that is. You've seen enough patrons at this place to get the feel for belligerent, I suspect.

Hehe. Anyway, we'll see you later."

She'd grin, and wave towards Ace as he'd go and sort the stuff he had to, for Penny when she'd arrive. provided she'd accept, but ergh... They'd sort it out if she didn't, somehow.

On 2021-11-15 at 7:57 AM, Illiad Easle said:

With that Rasputin would walk out of the office with Bling, "So, shall we break the news to Penny now? Or was there something else you needed to do first?"

"I'd like some lunch, actually. I think I might've skipped it."

"You did. I told you that twice."

"Huh... I must've really been focusing on the paperwork then. Well, better late than never. Let's go to the back rooms and grab a bag. Gloop should be prepping for the evening portions about now anyway.

...Can anyone lead us there? I sorta just picked one up before the runs, and never really figured out which one she used though."

Gloop had refused to make use of the kitchen for this, even though it had initially been an offering by Bling. The reasoning rightfully being, that they needed the kitchen for real food, whilst she could do with some improv area, like she normally did. Long as she had the essentials like some heat crystals, containers, and enough space to have it all in, she were set. Especially with all of her helpers these days, and the back room in question, had a door leading outside, to make it easier to transport around, without interrupting the flow of the casino.

Oh gods that sounded cheesy just stab me..."

Arcade blushed a bit towards the end of Null's confession, but shook his head, "My family means as much to me as yours does to you. Just as you'd do anything for your family, I'm honored to do the same for the one who saved mine. The fact that you like having me around... does make it easier."

Having not had to address them verbally thus far, it's perfectly normal that you'd find it awkward now that you're finally opening up."

Still, they let the conversation drift to more casual subjects, Arcade asking about the town and how the local customs and government worked, with her parents answering whatever Null couldn't as well as filling in any gaps.

Ace nodded, holding the door for them so they could leave, the other present casino workers moving in to congratulate him as Bling and Rasputin left the office, it seemed a good amount of the existing staff were happy with the decision.

Rasputin picked up on this sentiment, "That was something I neglected to consider, how the staff would react to our decision, I think we made a good choice with Ace, it tells the others that we're not just replacing everyone with changelings, but rather genuinely looking for good workers, and only adding changelings to fill gaps."

Second to the kitchens in terms of quality for changeling emotion gel production was the casino's boiler room, adjacent to housekeeping in the basement of the casino. The boiler was hooked up to a natural spring, likely the same one they used in their hive, to heat all the rooms with steam in the winter. For now it provided plenty of space and fresh hot water to make the gel with. Plus the proximity to housekeeping made it easy enough to distribute throughout the casino, as the housekeepers could easily deliver the portions discretely as they made their rounds.

"Family's all I've had that kept me going, for most of my life. If I didn't have Void to take care of, and now the rest of 'em... I dunno if I would've survived, honestly."

And that was probably true. Though it had broken her, the drive to protect Void, and find her a home, had kept her focused, and given her the drive she needed to push on. Without that, there were a good chance she would've just ended up dying in the streets, or somewhere in the wilderness.

It might not have been the best visual, but she just said the first the sprung to mind. And it wasn't like she had crushed any skulls... Recently. She just went through it enough to know what kinda force it'd take, on certain creatures., And honestly, it tended to b e harder than you'd think. Not as hard as talking about feelings though, she supposed. Guess when you only had experience in one, the other got weird. Just like her mother were saying.

"I guess you're right, mom. *sigh* Can't tell Void about it, but had to keep pushing feelings away. Had to look tough for her, y'know? We were both in shambles, but I'm the big sister. I gotta be able to stay in control, and keep us alive. Ain't helping if I started to bawl in front of her too. We'd have been caught and returned in chains then, or gotten killed in the wild. Better to just bottle it up, and look in control.

Ain't easy going out of that mindset..."

She wish she were as much in control, as she pretended. Sometimes she were. Sometimes, she barely managed to slog through it. Hopefully Arcade could live with the wreck he'd gotten together with, and see through her facade when it mattered.

She wondered if he had the same thing. Had to have been at least one of those foals that were like that, she supposed. Being all alone and stuff, one of 'em had to assume leadership. Wouldn't be easy for a youngling. She knew.

Null answered things best she could, but she wasn't aware of all of the nitty gritty, so frankly, the added talk from her parents to fill in the sometimes large blanks, was a good addition. It'd help Arcade get a good look at how the local stuff worked, whilst they ate. Might be she'd have to grab something more for her mom though. That size, and that appetite, she'd probably be more hungry soon. HJow it were, when you ate for three, she supposed.

It's simple things I know, but it's all part of regular life. As is it to know the value of currency, so others don't cheat you. Some creatures are sadly like that.

Oh right, I almost forgot, I needed to take some measures in your room. It'll help me see what sort of space I have to work with. Sorry about that."

Void had kinda missed that one, as she were focused on other things, but she were in there, after they had gone in to think about where it could be put up. She just had to examine the wall a bit more, and see how sturdy it were, and what kind of space it had. She'd have to take this on eye sight alone right now, but she could get more details later, and she had a fairly good ability to take rough measures.

So she'd go and poke to the wall, and have a good, hard look at it after, to get a rough idea. Same with the door. Always awkward to make something, that then couldn't fit through there.

"I'll have to bring a ruler for exact measures, but I have a pretty good idea about size. I think you'll like it."

"You didn't think about that? That was one of my first big concerns about this whole thing. Ace is really well liked, and if he's passed without even a thought, there'd be resentment. We might not have fired folks just to put in changelings, but the thought would be there. I just kept being worried that he might not be able to do it, and it'd look like I tried setting him up for failure, among other things.

But that's a fear that shouldn't be listened to. He's done good, and deserves a chance to flex his muscles. Best I can do is to give him the opportunity, and then be ready to catch him if he starts falling, if you catch my drift. What happens now is gonna be up to him."

"Ooooh. No wonder I couldn't find this place. I kept thinking it was in one of the back rooms, but this is way better. Warm,. access to water, discreet- Couldn't ask for something better.

Gloop? Are you in here, sister?"

"Yeah, I'm just preparing the next batch, with Glitter Bug."

Following the voice, they'd see Gloop, next to a large cauldron. Though she wasn't the one stirring. Instead, on a small box, to make sure she could reach, was a young changeling drone. A runty sort, that shook nervously once she saw who were in the room. Gloop nudged her a little, and she'd go back to just starring into the gel, with her different colored eyes fixated on the liquid.

There were a lot in the hive who had it bad for one reason or another, but Glitter were one of those who were considered to have had it worse, of those mentally damaged, rather than physically, as she had been abused by her queen.

Queen Magenta was a changeling of vanity. Everything in her hive, from their living quarters, to herself, and her changelings, had to be perfect. Those who weren't, were raised only until they were old enough to fend for themselves, separate from the rest of the hive, and then promptly exiled into the harsh wilderness. That would have happened with Glitter too, had it not been because the egg she hatched from, were one that the queen had picked out from the clutch. She claimed to feel something special in it, and proclaimed that from this larger than average egg, would hatch a changeling, which would one day become a princess, and carry on their standards elsewhere in the great world.

And then... Glitter had hatched.

Tiny even at birth, heterochromatic bue and green eyes, and with defective wings, that meant that flutter as she might, she'd never be able to fly, Magenta had considered her an abject failure. Not just as a changeling, but also of her ability to predict a worthy successor.

She hadn't allowed Glitter to leave, and had instead kept her in a chain. Having her herded around like something less than a pet, and living in filth. She tended to only get enough food to just about survive, but never being anything close to sated. If she objected to things, she'd be punished. If she attempted to move at a wrong time, or touch the queen, she'd be punished. Sometimes, she wouldn't even be doing anything, and she'd still be subject to Magenta's mental and physical abuse.

Those who showed her sympathy were dealt various punishments as well, and attempting to help her, no matter the circumstances, would cause them even worse. Up to and including broken limbs, and exile.

When marauders came into the area, during the crisis, the exiles still alive in the jungle, eagerly joined them in their conquest of the world. Starved for any kind of social interaction and approval, and thirty for vengeance, they directed the marauders towards the queens hive, and barged in, slaughtering their indoctrinated, former brethren, until they finally reached the queens chamber, and made sure she suffered gravely for her treatment of them.

Glitter were worthless to the horde, but one of the exiled still grabbed her, claiming to want to have fun by throwing her off a cliff. And to everyone's surprise- He did. Whilst laughing.

Glitter herself wasn't even sure how she got here. She were passed out for days, and woke up in the back of a wagon, about a half mile from New Las Pegasus. Best anyone could tell, someone had taken her from where she had fallen down, and judging by the various tools, and hides of other, unfortunate creatures on said wagon, had been tied up and meant as food for whatever deranged lunatic had taken her. Though seemingly, he or she, had been taken by some sort of creature before that, leaving her tied up under a pile of skins ranging from wolf to pony, and some questionable meat packaged up in bloodied pouches. Soon as she wriggled out, she had run as fast as she could, towards the town, and pretty much collapsed about ten feet from the entrance.

Gloop had been out helping with the morning deliveries by then, and by pure luck, noticed the beaten up, bloodied changeling drone, and rushed out to scoop her up, and get back in, before something took her.

It hadn't been easy getting close to her though. Glitter were used to nothing good coming from any changeling, and spent most of the first long time crying, and begging them not to hit her. The only pauses being when she got so exhausted that she passed out, and when she were left entirely alone, with some gel to eat.

It took two months before they could finally get her in some sort of dialogue, and even a half year later, they barely got to the point where she trusted a few, select changelings, and basically no one outside of the hive. She still didn't deal well with royalty though. The first chance she had been given to go and join the hive at the Blackwater Quarry, she had audibly screeches, and run into a closet. It took them four days to get her out again. Rasputin? She literally refused to leave her room the first time she heard he were there, and were heard whimpering through the door. Second time, he likely remembered, since she got within sight of him by accident, and let out a loud screech in terror, before taking off.

She frankly didn't feel well around him now either, but Gloop did her best to try and make her feel safe enough to not bolt off. Though the fear were rolling off of her, quite substantially.

As for why she were here, it were because Gloop encouraged her to try and help with the cooking. She felt like the runt had a knack for it. Though she didn't call her runt, of course. Her queen had done that, and had been the only name she had to her. It had been Bling, the first time she saw her, that said that wasn't fitting, and had said that she wasn't a runt, but a glitter bug, since the drone had a midsection color of dark purple, with silvery specks, like starlight. Glitter had taken that as her name, as she liked the sound of it, over the various other words that had been thrown her way.

She were also one of their vanity eating changelings, so she were happy that they were diversifying their food more, than mostly joy. And right now, they were actually dealing with a cauldron of vanity. Really not hard to gather in this town, if you knew where to look.

"Oooh, lovely. It's good to see you hard at work, Glitter. *sniff sniff* Vanity, huh? Haven't tried that in a while. Could I take a bit? Forgot lunch it seems.

You want something too, Rasputin? Pretty sure there's some spite over in storage."

Which there were. All the various emotions were bagged, and catalogued, now that they had to be more efficient about it. Which included about six bags of spite.

The conversation continued amicably until well after everyone had finished eating, when Arcade stood from the table, "Well, it has been good getting to know you two, but Null and I should figure out where I'm supposed to stay before it gets to late."

Her mother waved dismissively, "Nonsense! There's plenty of room here, at least until the foals come, you're welcome to stay as long as you need to."

Arcade looked a bit surprised by the offer, "Oh, really? You're sure you don't mind? Well, we can figure out long term habitation later then."

Her father continued, "Besides, Void should be home soon enough, it'd be best if we were all together to figure out what's going on with her sooner, rather than later."

It's not dissimilar to what we've been doing here with you, just on a larger scale. One of the things we're looking into is getting you all enrolled so you can socialize with other ponies your age."

Rasputin looked on Glitter with genuine concern, while Queen Gelatine had been by far the worst of the queens in terms of abuse towards their offspring, Rasputin had never been one to support such acts. Still, he hadn't done anything back then to stop her, so in a way he felt responsible for the traditions being passed down to some of her daughter queens, Magenta being one of them.

Still, there wasn't anything he could do that wasn't already being done for the abused changeling, though it did occur to him that she, having been selected to be a queen, could likely undergo the transformation far easier than Bling.

He shook his head, "I gather more than enough for myself, but thank you." He took a swig from one of the flasks he carried with him. "Besides, as a King I don't need nearly as much food to survive as a normal changeling does."

"The first time I sat down for a proper school class, was with you and Vale yesterday, actually.

Even if we weren't in a facility anymore, Null and I were little more than street urchins. We didn't have a stable home address, or parents, and the little money we had, were spend on things that kept us alive. Or the times when we were doing okay, and Null bought me something for my birthday. I kept telling her to spend some on herself too, but she wouldn't listen.

*sigh* Anyway, we learned slowly. We'd sneak around at some area, where the schools had some blind angles, and listen in to what were happening in class. And we'd fish old homework, and ratty books out of the garbage in various towns, to try and learn. It wasn't easy, but we managed.

You are all going to do better than that though.  We'll make sure you get proper schooling, and not just a degree in the dark sides of life."

Neither Null, nor Void, actually had any sort of diplomas, or anything to their name. Their work on glass and wood, were mostly self taught through necessity, and if they were asked to show documentation for their schooling, they'd have issues there. They'd have to start from around, fifth grade then, and beyond, to catch up. They knew the essentials though.

"We weren't in a facility as bad as yours were. At least not as far as I can remember, but the world can still be filled with dark things. I hope you'll never have to face that, but I know some of you will eventually want to go and see it, right? The big, open world? There's a lot of it that's gorgeous, and filled with wonder. Some of the things I've seen, still makes me smile at times. But you have to be prepared for the worst too. That's how you stay safe, and I'd rather you didn't learn through trial and error, like we did.

Maybe someday, we can go over some of the things I've seen in one of your school sessions with Vale? She's far better at math than I am, but I can show some sketches, and explain what's there, and that'd maybe do for a biology class, or survival lecture? That might be fun."

The bigger the job, the longer it'd take too of course, but it'd be worth it for them in the end, she were sure of it.

"You'll have to be patient with me, but I'll get to work on it when I have some free time. Does the rough estimate look good for you, or is there something you'd like to add?"

Although I might ask you something about that some other day. If you know how they work, maybe you'll have a better idea of how to avoid trouble with them. I'm fearing the answer is violence."

Rasputin were not undeserving of his reputation, nor his trip into Tartarus. That were undisputable. But that did not mean that Bling would hold it against him, even if he sorta poked at it himself, when he said how he ran things. At best, she'd like him to talk about it, since she figured it might help him get it off of his chest. Though in regards to the gangs, that was also a reason that they might have to chat a little about if not his past, then at least how they might deal with gangs. They didn't bother the changelings as much before, since they had little of value, and weren't important in the town. But now, with Hive Cheshire having this casino... It might not be so simple anymore. Whatever insight Rasputin could give into that, would be real helpful. At least until The Grey cleared the worst of them out.

How they did that, she'd rather not hear about. It were enough knowing they made certain beings *disappear*. Digging further into it, might end up getting her nose stuck in a metaphorical bear trap.

Still, there wasn't anything he could do that wasn't already being done for the abused changeling, though it did occur to him that she, having been selected to be a queen, could likely undergo the transformation far easier than Bling.

While the process would likely be easier, Glitter wouldn't react well to the suggestion. Even the mention of royalty would - as Rasputin were about to see - cause her fear to spike up exponentially. Getting offered to become one, would likely cause her to run to the other side of New Las Pegasus, whilst screaming the entire way.

She might not have been as cruel as her mother, but Magenta had still broken this drone in ways that would take years, if not decades to mend. Maybe it just wouldn't ever happen.

He shook his head, "I gather more than enough for myself, but thank you." He took a swig from one of the flasks he carried with him. "Besides, as a King I don't need nearly as much food to survive as a normal changeling does."

At the word *king*, Glitter would start shaking, and let out a low, whining tune. This would go on for a few seconds after Gloop went in close, and took the runt in her embrace. The cook hugging Glitter, whilst whispering a soothing tune in her ear, and using her horn to take over the stirring duties.

"Oh bugger, that wasn't... *sigh* Sorry about that, Glitter.

Guess we should leave the girls to do their thing. If you don't need the food for now, it'll go in storage with the rest. Let's get going then. See you later."

She'd wave at Gloop and Glitter, before wandering out of the room again. Along with Rasputin, and her own bag of joy. and she wouldn't stop until she were well out of reach of them. Only then would she let out a long sigh, and shake her head softly.

"I should've known better... Sorry about that. I didn't mean to put you in that kind of situation. Glitter is uhm... She's not doing well. Her queen were one of the bad ones. Don't know if you ever met Magenta?"

We didn't have a stable home address, or parents, and the little money we had, were spend on things that kept us alive. Or the times when we were doing okay, and Null bought me something for my birthday. I kept telling her to spend some on herself too, but she wouldn't listen.

There were a number of concepts in that statement that confused the ponies, in the order they were presented:

Teal asked, "So, um, what's money? Mistress mentioned it a few times in passing, but never in much detail."

Ardee supplemented the question with, "I think she explained it to Rare once, but... well..."

Elef asked, "Could you explain birthdays? Ada, the guard mare, asked me when mine was, and I didn't know what to tell her, and the festival she took me too was in anniversary of Fastar's death, is it like that?"

"You use money to buy things, such as groceries, or toys. You normally earn them when you work, or sell things to others. Like, I have a glassshop, so others come in, and buy stuff like false eyes, and windows from me.

I don't have any with me today, but I can take some with me tomorrow, and you can have a look at those. Different countries tend to have different currencies though. In Equestria, they used to have small slivers of gold, they called Bits, for example.

And birthdays are a celebration. Every year, on the day someone came into this world, they'll have their birthday. Usually there's cake, presents, and lots of songs and games. Mine and Null's were a bit... Different, but most are like that. That's how money comes into to it too. It can be used to buy the stuff you need for the party, or if you can't think of a present, you can always just give some money to the one being celebrated, and they can buy their own. It's a lot less personal, but at least then you know they'll get something they want.

As for the anniversary you talked about, Elef, it's not exactly the same. Birthdays are something mostly celebrated for the living. Anniversaries depend, with some being for marriages, or in the case of Fastar, the death date of an important creature. If it's someone that meant a lot to others, they sometimes celebrate their death, or the date of an important thing that they did."

I've learned the hard way, and it's not pleasant, so I do what I can to make sure my own work's up to the task. For someone self taught, I don't think I'm doing all that bad."

I'm happy they clean out the worst crime. How they do it, is best left to the forgotten pages of history."

"I don't say this about a lot of creatures, but I hope she's in pain, down in Tartarus. We've not gotten a lot out of Glitter, since she tends to get panic attacks when she speaks about it too much, but what we do know... Thrown in the dirt. Abused mentally and physically, day in and day out. Told she's worthless... How can a queen treat their own young like that? And for what? Because she wasn't perfect?"

If she had it in her to feel truly furious, this would likely be one of those that made Bling's blood boil. Yet even if she were not an angry being by nature, thinking of this still made her increasingly annoyed, and going towards anger the more it went on. Some things were just too much, even for her.

"I've met vanity changelings before. They're often pompous and egocentrical, thinking on looks more than anything, but they've still been somewhat nice to their own.

Mark my words: There's no one who shed a tear when Hive Magenta fell, and there never will be.

*sigh* Sorry, I get worked up about this. The poor mare didn't deserve that. We've had to work a lot to get her well enough to even be around others without screaming, but she's still so afraid they're gonna come for her. Or that another royal just put claim to her, and drags her off in a chain, like Magenta did. Can you imagine your own mother doing that to you? Right after you hatched, no less? She got it the worst, since she were supposed to be the next in line, but some others got promptly tossed into the wilderness too.

I can't blame the others of her hive that joined the marauders, and tore her to shreds. I just hope that if any of them are still alive, they stay away from New Las Pegasus. It might just leave her catatonic to see one of them.

It's nothing personal about you either. We've told her good things, and she's sort of accepting it, otherwise she would've run out of the room when you came in. But she's fragile. She needs time to know you're not a threat to her.

Can we talk of something nicer? Maybe Queen Sleipnir? I heard a few, nice things about queen Permutation, but I can't say I ever heard of Queen Sleipnir. Not beyond the name."

It seemed like it was best to simply bring some currencies along tomorrow, and then run a pretend exchange. A bit of roleplay they could set up easily enough, with Vale as the other participant. It would likely work better that way, rather than just try and tell them about it. Some creatures were more visual learners after all. Besides, it might be fun.

"Vale's right. You don't have marks yet, but we will celebrate it, when that day comes. And until then, we can think of a birthday for you, where you can all have a big one together. We'll try and find some way to find the records of your real ones later, but it'll probably take a while. The facility's likely still dangerous, so there have to be taken precautions. But don't worry about that for now. It'll be a thing for the rest of us to figure out.

In the meantime, can you tell us if there's any particular date, that holds a special meaning for you? Maybe we can use that, if you remember any."

If she had been there at the same time, she could think of two big things, that could have gotten that one in trouble. One being the accident, that cost her her leg, and Null her wing. And the other being when they managed to escape.

To think, whatever had happened, if it were there, and related to them... Could that have been a reason for her to take the foals away? Guilt, or potentially seeing what Calligraphy and Bunsen did, and understanding what they did? There could be many reasons, and it wasn't even sure it was related to them, but the facility Eponsilon wasn't a metropolis. There were a chance they had actually met, and Void had just simply forgotten. Or worse, repressed it.

"Please don't worry. It was just something I hadn't expected to hear, and it threw me off a little. I'm very sorry if I startled any of you."

She would like to ask about what they said, about where they were originally, but it might not be the best time to poke at that. They seemed concerned that they might have spoken out of line already, and she didn't want to be seen as aggressively digging into things when that were up. There'd be another time for them to figure this out, and to then bring it to the consul. He should likely know about these things.

She didn't think it would cause her to break mentally, and go crazed somehow, but if it did, she had faith that Rasputin would do the right thing, and put her out of her misery. She didn't want to be like Magenta, or other queens like that. She'd rather be dead. And if there were any changeling in town she trusted to respect that, and to protect those she wanted to care for, from her, it were Rasputin.

It shouldn't go that way, but one always had to have a contingency plan. Even if it were a grim one.

"Aligning with your food isn't bad. But you have to strike a balance. The few smart vanity changelings I know, play it well, by being in fields where those around them are vain, and encourages that. We're talking high end clothing stores, expensive jewelry, that sort of thing. Places where the rich comes in to feel superior. Long as they play the part right, they have a very easy time causing an abundance of vanity to flow. But you're right, that if they start to get too vain themselves, it will ruin it.

Maybe you should meet Madamme Fatigue at some point. She's one of the few who does it right. She still have her store to focus on, but she have acknowledged the need of the hive, and allowed us to set up some discreet, hidden vats up at her location. It's where we get most vanity from these days.

Far easier for me, and my siblings. We're from a hive of joy. And encouraging joy, is easier if you embrace that to some degree."

Where her mother would have subjugated, she uplifted, it is mostly due to her efforts that Manehatten became as big and developed as it did."

"As I've said, Cheshire wasn't invited to join the meetings, and we mostly stayed in Las Pegasus, so we didn't get to meet others there. Though maybe she knew her before she came here. It's hard to say. She didn't speak about her time before that a lot with us. Said that while she treasured a lot of it, there were time to talk about some of them later. After we had gotten a proper foothold in town.

But I think I've met some of her changelings though. We've had a few pas through from Manehattan once in a while, since Las Pegasus tended to still have some high end beings that were sought after. And the casinos, and all the attractions for families. Really, there were a lot of reason to go there. And of the changelings we've met, the ones from Manehattan tended to be among the nicest ones.

A lot just came through, and didn't bother with us. Some were happy, some scowled- A lot of reactions really. But that hive seemed nice. And Cheshire were well happy to meet them too. Before we got into town, after King Thorax made changelings going public legal, and safe'ish, she'd invite them into our hive, and her personal chambers, to enjoy a chat and some of what we had gathered. Wasn't always they had time, but she were thrilled about them. Told us that they belonged to one of the only members of her remaining family, that she fully respected.

Might be why she left for a week once, after our new theater had gotten stabilized enough, to not be on the verge of collapse actually... I remember her saying she had something important to do in Manehattan. I just figured she were going to say hello to that hive briefly, then focus on some theater work, since she came back with a heaping helpful of plays we could work on. Which really helped, since most of the stuff in the theater we got handed over, were moldy and illegible. Could be she went and visited Sleipnir too? We should ask Upbeat sometime. She asked him to do a few things for her while she were gone, so maybe she told him.

Sleipnir sounds like a fabulous queen in any case. To have been dealt such a harsh hand from birth, and yet flourishing with it. It's inspiring. I wish I could've met her, but I guess, she's one of those who didn't make it, right? *sigh* That's sadly been a far too common tale, these last few years. With sadly more of the good ones falling, than the bad ones. If by some stroke of luck she is still alive, I'd be thrilled to meet her someday. I guess, with the way things are planned, I might get to meet several queens. Old, powerful ones... Oh boy, almost getting a little nervous, heh. Though maybe there's some newer ones too. Did Sleipnir raise a queen herself?"

Bling were about done eating when she said that, so whenever Rasputin were ready, she were prepared to get a move on. Penny rented a spacious room in an inn downtown, in one of the nicer neighborhoods. She'd probably be busy with paperwork, but as she expected them to return to her one of these days, she'd likely spare them a few minutes of her time.

In the meantime, can you tell us if there's any particular date, that holds a special meaning for you? Maybe we can use that, if you remember any.

The ponies looked a bit confused, a bit discouraged, and a bit thoughtful as to how they could answer this question. Vale picked up on this, "Ah, perhaps it would best if we reviewed what dates are and mean? That might help you choose one or a few."

The ponies nodded at that as Vale sought out a calendar to demonstrate. "Alright. Here's one." She pulled out a calendar that was fairly distinct from the type of calendar that Void might be used to. This one was circular. She spread it out on the ground so everyone could see, "So this is a year long calendar, divided into four quarters to represent the four seasons, Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter as they are most commonly termed, though in Cervidas, at least among deer, Spring is also referred to as Raising, as that is when all the new fawns are born and when the bucks grow their horns and gain their magic. Other areas and cultures have their own names for the seasons. But I digress. Most ponies are born either in Spring or Fall, usually in the first or second moon."

(I'm taking a bit of liberty here on how seasons work in Equestria as I don't think there's any specific cannon on it)

"Each season is three moons long, which is the time it takes for the moon to go from full, to empty, to full." She pointed out along the circumference of the calendar where it showed the phases of the moon as the weeks passed, "Which is 27.5 days, so you see the moons on the calendar alternate between 27 and 28 days long. It's easy to remember as the odd numbered moons have an odd number of days." She rotated the calendar to Fall, "Here we are now, almost halfway through the first moon of Fall. You remember that the moon looked like this when we went up on the wall, that's an easy way to tell where in the moon you are if you're out exploring. Anyway, Null would have found you around here, at the start of the first moon of Fall. Assuming your Mistress brought you to that facility just before leaving for the Æther..." She rotated the calendar back to Spring, "That would have been early Spring, right at the start of the second moon, which would be a fairly common birthday."

She looked up from the calendar, "Another reason why ponies mostly celebrate the anniversary of their marks, they share a birthday with about a sixth of the pony population."

The ponies seemed distracted by something else though, Ardee looked up, "Can... can we write on this? We... we'd like to remember at least... when the others died."

Vale gained a much more serious expression, "Yes, of course. Here, just tell me where and I'll write them in so their names will be legible." Under Ardee's direction they added to the calendar the names of their fallen siblings. Ayjay (Vale wrote out the name rather than assigning the initials they were based on) was the first, only lasting till the start of the third moon of spring. Effs was the second, making it to the second moon of summer, and Rare was the last, dying the same day that Null had found them.

That established, they decided they wanted some time before coming to a decision on when they'd celebrate their birthday.

Maybe even when we were there too. Do you remember her name? maybe it'll ring a bell."

She didn't look too sure, "Well, we always called her Mistress, but the other ponies called her Powers."

"Gemini" Toupé spoke up, pointing to the front pocket of her coat where the name was embroidered, "Gemini Powers."

They all looked back at Void, worried expressions as they awaited her reaction to the reveal.

I trust you to do what have to be done, Rasputin. For all of us."

Rasputin gave her a sidelong look, "I wouldn't have brought it up as an option if I had any doubt as to your ability. I may be powerful, but queens are a power all their own. I'd be hard pressed to take down even the weakest of fledgling queens by myself. Still, I'll do all in my power to make sure you're on the right path. I'll get you in contact with Oracle and Mariposa as well, it has rarely ever gone well for queens when they didn't have other queens to support them."

10 hours ago, Blitz Boom said:

"I'm sorry. I didn't mean to stir bad memories. I'll try and keep that sort of phrasing down another time."

He shook his head, "No no, it's all right. I wrote about it in my play, but it doesn't surprise me that that part may not have been used in all renditions. Or perhaps you didn't realize that the play was an autobiography? Can't hardly fault you for that."

He sighed, "Perhaps another time I can go into greater detail, but I was born a pony, and my parents, most specifically my father, threw me out at a young age for not being as strong as my siblings. Left me to fend for myself on the cold streets of Stalliongrad. While my experience isn't the same as hers, I do believe I can understand her situation."

10 hours ago, Blitz Boom said:

after King Thorax made changelings going public legal,

Rasputin rolled his eyes at that, "Thorax is an example of everything wrong with the Equestrian perception of changelings as a species, though it isn't entirely his fault, he simply made the best of the terrible situation his Queen set up for him. Perhaps on another occasion I can explain my thoughts on his philosophy in depth."

10 hours ago, Blitz Boom said:

but I guess, she's one of those who didn't make it, right?

He nodded, "She fell defending Manehatten. One of the strongest queens ever to live, and even she was no match for that draconequis. Still, her defense allowed the majority of the city's population to successfully evacuate."

10 hours ago, Blitz Boom said:

I might get to meet several queens. Old, powerful ones... Oh boy, almost getting a little nervous, heh. Though maybe there's some never ones too. Did Sleipnir raise a queen herself?

He smiled a bit, "Perhaps you will. I hope you'll at least be able to meet Oracle and Mariposa, the latter being the daughter of Sleipnir. If fate allows you should also meet with Permu when the Æther returns, and Nirvana when travel to the Himallamas becomes feasible."

Void had looked a bit awkward as she hadn't thought of how they might not know what dates were. Thankfully Vale had saved the day, by coming in with an explanation, yet it were still a bit awkward, to say the least. No less so, when the foals started to speak about their dead friends. It was good they wanted to commemorate the days they died, but still, it made her heart bleed for them. Poor things had seen too much death already in their lives, and it were going to leave some dark marks upon them. She knew so from experience, though she hoped that they would get off easier than that.

It might not be a bad idea to perhaps think of a shrink at some point in the future though. With the sort of thing they had to tackle with in their lives, that might help them greatly. It had helped her at least, and likely would Null too, if she could convince her sister to go there. So far no luck on that front, but maybe with her new coltfriend, there was a chance she could make Arcade help to convince her.

"Whenever you're ready, we'll write the dates down. And when the other ones comes around, we'll make sure to do something in memory of them. There are some traditions I can tell you about, when those days near. Trojan, and otherwise."

They all looked back at Void, worried expressions as they awaited her reaction to the reveal.

Void were stunned for a second, then looked away awkwardly, and fidgeted in place, as she tried to find out a way to say this. Hoooh boy, this was gonna be awkward...

"O-Okay, so uhm... G-Good news, is that I knew her. A little bit. She were in the town, or I g-guess facility, that we grew up in. And uhm...

W-Well, the last time I saw h-her, she were r-rushing over to Null and I, after we uhm... A-After the accident... That t-took my leg, and h-her wing. She saved us, and g-gave us a chance to e-escape. Your mistress was a g-good pony. That m-might have been why s-she got in trouble."

She had to take a few deep breaths after that, before going on, but she had to do this. If she ended it here, it would give off a bad impression.

"S-Sorry if I sound a l-little uhm... Nervous. Just t-thinking back on that day, m-makes my anxieties go a l-little haywire."

She didn't want to speak of how she remembered the sound of crushing bones, and torn flesh. A context she understood, once she woke up, and found her leg gone, but had mercifully been knocked out for during the process.

As for Gemini... She had her assumptions, but considering how she faintly recalled her parents talking briefly of that night, back in the day, they said that a neighbor had brought them back, and that was the only visitor they got, before a couple of others came in to check up on things later. That being the time she remembered her father yelling, though she couldn't remember what, anymore. Considering what she remembered of Gemini, and how she had been if not nice, then at least neutral to her and Null, she could imagine that it were her that had gotten them home.

Yet she had still been among those who had pinned Null down. She just couldn't remember if she had been the one with the blade, the large scissor, one of those restraining her big sister, or one of the gathered ones who watched. Some of whom, were likely medical attendees. The only ones who'd likely have some idea of the answer of that, were her parents. She were but a foal at the time after all, and it was over twenty years ago, in an adrenaline rush, whilst trying to save her sister from being grounded. She might remember some things wrong now, but had blabbered it off to her parents back then. Or they had gotten a report at the time.

Thinking back on this, brought a lot of guilt back too. What happened to Null and her... She knew her big sister blamed herself, for being lured in in the first place, and struggling, so it just caused more chaos once Void barged in. But Void would always know that in the end, it were her fault. If she had just stayed out of it, she would still have her leg, and though she would've been grounded for the time, Null would've eventually gotten new flight feathers, as she grew older, instead of lumbering around with a single wing, that made it impossible for her to fly.

That one would always be her fault. And she didn't know if she could ever forgive herself for it, even if Null did.

*sigh* This were something she had to bring up though to her again later. So she now had several things that she were going to have to bring up tonight. Considering who the foal's mistress were, it would be the most important. And one that might not have such a rosy tint to it as she believed.

"I'm a pacifist, that could lose a fight to a perceptive cat. I'm sure you'd have a fighting chance, even if my moralle changes, since I wouldn't have the slightest combat training. That's one of the reasons why I honestly are feeling a good bit safer with Bruce here around."

Bruce hadn't said something for a while, but that wasn't his job to do either. He were there to protect his queen, not interfere in their talks. Rasputin didn't have to worry though. He had yet to say anything to others that he wasn't meant to, and he wouldn't now either.

As for where he'd stand on what Bling asked... As he usually said, he were there to protect his queen. As per her own words now, that included to protect her from herself, if she cracked under the pressure. He wouldn't be able to do as much as Rasputin by any mean, but perhaps his life could provide an opening.

"And I'd be happy to speak with those two, regardless of what happens. Especially Oracle. I think we have one of her changelings. You'd be amazed how many scouts ended up isolated from their hives, once the crisis started. We probably have fledglings from at least a half dozen hives in town, where we don't know the fate of their queens.

Dunno if Mariposa's one of them though. Not everyone's as happy to talk about where they came from. And a few sometimes pretend to be from more important hives, to feel better about themselves, so the one off of Oracle's might not be for real. We'll see some day."

"The play was written by you?! I always figured it were made after the fact, by someone that liked to exaggerate, and add more to the story. No wonder Cheshire always put so much effort into performing your part, when we had it on stage.

It's a shame you never saw it. I think you would've been impressed. Hopefully she haven't forgotten it when she comes back."

Bling lived happily with the idea that Cheshire were still alive, and no one could prove it to her otherwise. As she had been a good queen until the very end, and a kind being in general, although she liked to play silly, harmless tricks, her afterlife wouldn't have ended in the flames. So Rasputin likely didn't see her. Only one who'd know the truth, were at the Blackwater Quarry, and until he'd perhaps end up back here, there'd be no way to shatter that dream of hers. Which might happen one of these days. Word would eventually have to come by now that there were safer travel routes, from some changelings who'd like to go and join that hive, that some of his siblings still lived, and kept up the traditions. He'd want to come home again, even if the news he had would shatter them.

(up to you when/if that news might come his way)

"I'm sorry to hear it's all real though. It's a tragic story, that doesn't begin well, and ends worse. Hopefully it can end up going better now, and the next play we'll make about you, will be a grandiose tale of redemption, and acceptance. I'd love to help you write that someday."

"I'd never turn into what he were, but it was because of him, that changelings in Equestria, managed to go from hated pariah's, after Chrysalis's disastrous, foolish attack on Canterlot, into accepted creatures. Sure there were still prejudices, but were it not for him, we would've never been able to live openly like we did, and have this theater in the first place. Not unless we did so, forever hidden, and that was never Cheshire's dream for us. She wanted out to be able to walk in the open, and after what Chrysalis did, that seemed impossible.

Whatever else there were with Thorax, I'll always praise him, for the life he made possible for us."

Sad news, yet sadly not unexpected. Many had died after what Discord had done, and their kind were not free of his mayhem either. So many drones and queens alike had died, and hives been torn apart, due to his actions... And to think that once, ponies were starting to think of him as a friend. Even if he were gone now, she could imagine that those draconmequui that were still out there, would have to hide for a long, long time, to not be hunted down and attempted killed too, because they would be seen as potentially the next Discord in action. Even if none of them were as powerful as he were.

"I've read about the Himallamas. It sounds like a very beautiful place. Definitely somewhere to go visit someday, once everything's starting to be cleared out in their area, and the world begins opening up a little more. Though mostly looking forward to meeting Mariposa. Maybe as the daughter of Sleipnir, she'd have run into Cheshire, or heard of her, so we'd have some grounds to stand on there."

After this, she'd lead them on to the inn. Going in, the innkeeper - a griffon called Clarice - would point them towards the room, without a word. She were busy dusting off the counter, and clean the extra keys. Besides, she knew why they were here. They were expected. Or well, 2 of 'em were. The last one - Rasputin, likely in disguise - she didn't know about. Wasn't her issue either, long as they didn't cause problems. And Hive Cheshire had never given her problems before.

Going into the room, they'd find Penny. A stack of papers on each side of her spacious, oak desk, and five more floating in the air in front of her. She were reading over various ones in front of her, whilst pens were floating, scribbling down on those hanging there at various times, and as Cheshire opened her mouth to speak, she'd raise a hoof up. Cheshire got the point, and waited a few seconds more, until she'd nod, and float the papers into a stack in front of her.

The whole way the office she had made herself here, were as professional in look as she were. Sharp glasses on her muzzle, a tailored suit, and a strong poker face. Her eyes watched the three with some curiosity as they entered, and she could finally give them her full, undivided attention. Though before that, she'd float a small, berry sized globule of pride towards her, which were gathered in a bowl, at the side of her table. She tended to snack more on her food, than to gobble down a lot at a single time.

"Cheshire, Bruce, and I am assuming the famed Rasputin? Please, come in."

Her tone were professional and to the point too. A bit hard to read her due to it, but that tended to be a strength of hers. Made it harder for clients to know if they intimidated her.

A little louder, but more to the others than to Void or Vale, "They wouldn't want us to sit and mope about them. Let's make them proud until the time to remember them comes, alright?"

The other three nodded, faint smiles growing on their faces as they turned their attention back to Void.

Both Ardee and Vale seemed to pick up that there was something more than Void was letting on, but neither commented on it at the moment. The other three seemed happy to hear that their Mistress had helped her as well.

Still, it had been some time since they had last eaten, Vale stepping up this time to feed them, "You said I'd have to take a turn, so I prepared a little something last night."

She went over to a bag she had stowed away when she first came in in the morning, pulling out a stack of cracker-like bread, enough for two per pony, a small tub of what looked like yogurt, and a selection of sliced cheese and small fruits.

Swedish Food: Frukost: Knäckebröd och Filmjölk – Breakfast: Crisp Bread and Filmjölk

She spread them across the counter for the young ponies to see. She held up one of the bread pieces, "In Cervidas they call this Knäckebröd, which means crisp bread, It's like a cracker here, but meant to last a long time without going bad, which is very good for deer as we tend to be nomadic. You can eat it as is, or by topping it like we will tonight."

She gestured next to the yogurt like substance, "This is Filmjölk, which translates to sour milk, but this is safe to eat. It's like yogurt, but not as creamy and a bit more sour, so you usually top it with some fruits. It's one of those things that don't taste too good, but it's very good for you."

She demonstrated, taking one of the crisp bread, spreading a thin layer of the sour milk on it, then adding some cheese and a strawberry, taking a bite to show it was safe to eat. She looked a little disappointed as she ate, "It's not as good as I remember my mother making it, but it's still good. Go on, there's enough for you all to try some different combinations, you too Void, so see what you like."

While the older ponies took to assembling combinations that intrigued them, the foals were content to nibble on a crisp bread each with some of the fruit and cheese separate, their caregivers dipping the fruit in a small amount of the sour milk so they would get some of the healthy mixture too.

Rasputin raised an eyebrow, "I doubt you have one of hers. She and Mari both are brand new queens, their first generation only a year or so old at the start of the crisis. Still adorable foal-lings. More likely you have one of Permu's who was sent with Oracle to help her establish her hive. Besides, the Blackwater Protectorate is a long way from here, and changelings often find the anti-magic wastes particularly deadly."

When a changeling died, the magical shield that covered their entire body and also served to form their disguises would dissipate, exposing their bodies to the atmosphere and causing them to burn to ash, which is why no one had ever found a dead changeling before. Anti-magic could cause this field to fail, resulting in them burning alive, an especially painful way to go. As such, the anti-magic wastes were all but impassible to changelings, too long out there would kill them.

"Further, Mariposa is in the zebrican isles, even further but a bit more accessible. Especially now that work is beginning to repair North and South Port."

Void were more than happy to hear that there were something else they could focus on right now, rather than her apart not-so-good defense, regarding their mistress. This were getting to be a bit of a messy situation.

As for the distraction, Void were honestly pretty surprised at what she heard. As well as saw, once Vale presented what she had prepared. It shook her out of her nervous fit, as her eye fixated on the culinary achievement, of her fellow foal raiser.

"I... I actually completely forgot about that. But this is looking very nice, Vale. And *sniff* *sniff* smells good too. Great timing too. I think it is about time for everyone to have something to eat again, before we hear a lot of grumbling tummies. I'll set the table."

While Vale explained, Void would have the table set. Plates, cups, and some cooled cactus juice. She had to work on making more soda at some point, when there were time though. It'd be nice to have in the back pocket, for when things became more serious.

She were still listening in well however, despite doing this. She had seen some of what deer ate, but it had been hasty, and they didn't know details. The time Null and her had been trapped by them, they had to do with random dirt-covered veggies tossed at them in their cage. This here were a good deal better looking than that.

"I've seen bread like this before. I think we found some stacks of smaller, thicker versions of it once, when we scavenged some rations we found up north once. Though it smelled more... Well, it's hard to describe. A bit like stale ale, and beets. This is far more pleasant."

When there were room, and the table were done in properly, she'd go and pick up a slice too. Such a fascinating little piece. She'd have to ask Vale how to make these later. If they lasted a long time, she could perhaps get to work baking of of these for ration packs at some point, just in case Null went off, so she didn't have to just scavenge for food. But for now though, she'd try tasting it. A little nibble, just to judge what kind of taste this were.

Once she had a feel for it, she'd put some sour milk on, then top it with a spread mixture of cheese and fruit. More cheese though. She rarely got the chance to enjoy a good cheese anymore, and this seemed like it'd make for a good combination. The fruit were just to add a little tinge of sweet to the sour.

Once it were assembled, and she were at the table, she'd take a slow bite, and chew it slowly. Really give herself a chance to enjoy the tastes here. Judging from her facial expression, she clearly enjoyed it too.

"This is pretty good, Vale. I'm impressed even. I didn't know you could bake. Think you could teach me this someday? It'd be lovely to learn something new.

"As I said, some of them lie about their hives, for various reasons. It's not hurting anyone, so I don't nag them about it, lest they start acting weird. Also, I might've mixed it up. There's a lot of changelings in the area, and while I do my best, I can't remember every detail.

Although I know some have spoken about the quarry. I was even asked myself recently, if I wanted to go there. But my place is here, in New Las Pegasus. Others might want to go that route though, since there's some fans of that hive. I should remember to send them along with some news from town, and an open invitation when that is, actually. Soon as they find a stable, secure path around the danger zone. Hopefully shouldn't take too long now, with things easing up slowly.

Guess there's lots and lots of things to look forward to in the future, now that we have one. Hehe."

He gave a smug smile, "And what makes you think I haven't seen your rendition? I was around before and during the crisis remember, and I must say, Cheshire's rendition was my favorite by far. I did not know that she herself performed my part, I'm honored."

"Are you kidding me?! You were there? Cheshire would've gone so giddy the entire theater would've lit up. She's gonna go crazy when she hears this.

And you bet she did that herself. As well as several other parts. That was always her specialty, to trick others, often via making use of several impressive illusions at once. Either to play more roles than one, or in some cases, to really confuse someone. Like for instance, this one time that a shop owner in the old town, told her that he didn't care about the law, and he didn't want us *filthy beasts* in his shop. She went in, and started to mess with him, to prove a point. About a dozen different beings going around and touching things, lifting them and set it out of order, fire off comments and so on. And he were going mad, since he couldn't tell this was her.

That's always been a thing of hers. Illusions, with some magic in, can make for an impressively realistic body double, able to touch things all the same. Combine it with some high end ventriloquism, and you have a recipe for one hay of a performer.

All of us, from her hive, have her passion for theater in some way, and we're strongest at illusions. None of us could do what she did though. We don't have that sort of magic to work with. Though if things goes well, I hope I can replicate her art. It was always so impressive, to see a stage of 6-7 performers, and then knowing that it was all her, acting her heart out, and none were the wiser.

That play, where she played you, right? Could you tell that she had three parts at once, for the majority of that, with some of us going in at times when a character went out of sight, for a seeming transition? Or vice versa? It's so few who could actually tell, unless they were strong hunter types, who could go by heart beats, or like, really minute smells."

Before entering her room, Rasputin took a moment to prepare, adopting a stoic, slightly unimpressed, expression and cold demeanor. He hardly acknowledged her greeting, simply nodding when addressed, then turning his cold gaze around the room as if analyzing it, judging it for any potential flaws, as he waited for Bling to break the news to her.

She did not look impressed at him either, as Rasputin put on the tough act. Nor did she look like she'd scowl either. She kept her demeanor as it were. Some tough beings who liked to flex muscle had come in to intimidate her during her work before, and if they didn't make her break her facade, this minor display hadn't a chance. Not in her current state at least. Maybe if she were in a bad mood, it might change.

As for flaws, he'd find the room spartanic. It had the essentials, and furthest along the wall, a bed, with a small table next to it, holding a mug of water. No personal items of any kind were shown, nor any mess. Even the desk were ridiculously clean. The sort who took pride in her work, to no surprise.

Now she'd be tested though, as the situation were laid out before her, by Bling. Not the full details, as she weren't to know that there were a *test phase* more or less going here, but otherwise, she'd be told of the position they were willing to offer her, as the one she had hoped for had been filled, by internal promotion. By a staff member with impressive credentials as well.

"So that's how it is. We'd still like to offer you the position of floor manager though."

"I accept. When will I be required to start?"

"Wait, really? I thought you'd be a little... Well, miffed, about this."

"I'm not an idiot. Considering the time it took, I assumed you had another candidate too. I asked around whom might have the guts to do so, and began hearing rumors that the floor manager were being considered. So I had time to come to terms with this potential outcome. It is undesired, but it is still a position of some importance, and a shoe in."

"And you know you're not allowed to try and sabotage his work?"

"If I did, it would just get the both of us dismissed, the casino would end in a rut, and there would never come an opportunity to run it again. There's more to gain from simply doing my job, and be ready to step in, if he can't handle it, or at some point goes elsewhere. Trying to sabotage him would be illogical."

She were slightly jealous, but she kept that inside, and didn't show it in her actions, words, or even gaze. Her hive had died by being too prideful to know when to simply swallow said pride, and if she began to be consumed by it too, rather than being the one in control, she'd end up with nothing. Patience would get her more, and she'd deal with this job then, in the meantime. It beat having to help with tax loop holes for beings with more cash than morals, or logical sense.

"Any objections, or comments, from the assembled committee? I assume you're here to see if I would act out of place at least, Rasputin?"

She didn't ask about Bruce, because they all knew why he were here. Guard drones like him were so... Simplistic.

Vale nodded, bread like this is common for long term rations, it just gets harder the longer it sits. It's always much better fresh.

Her eyes widened a bit before she shook her head, "Nonono, I didn't bake this, I just picked it up from a deer in the market. No, my mother never got the chance to teach me how to make it." She sighed before resuming eating.

They all nodded, Elef a bit less enthusiastically than the others, which prompted Vale, "Oh! nearly forgot," she went over to the ice box (Did you know deer eat meat? They'll apparently eat anything that doesn't put up a fight.) Where she pulled out a small amount of thinly sliced fish, "You might enjoy this Elef. I heard some pegasi liked to eat fish, and that thestrals enjoy meat, so I figured this would fit well. A lot of deer eat fish too." She turned back towards the others, "The rest of you are welcome to try a bit too, if you want, a small amount shouldn't do any harm."

Elef was happy to add a few slices to his stack, following Vale's example, and Ardee was curious enough to try a piece as well. Teal and the foals stayed away, not liking the smell, but Toupé, surprisingly enough, took up Vale's offer to try a bit.

Tasting it slowly, a curious expression came to her face, "It tastes... good, better than I would have guessed." She didn't take it any further, thanking Vale for the opportunity and going back to her food while Ardee and Elef enjoyed their portions, both expressing a strong appreciation for the variety offered them.

Soon enough the dinner was completed and the young ponies all helped clean up what was left over. Vale left the remaining bread in a stack on the counter, "It'll keep well enough, just in case you want a snack later."

Then it was off to get ready for bed with the foals, and they were soon gathered on their bed ready for another story, they looked to Void to lull them to sleep.

With that he would turn to leave, waiting outside for the others before continuing, "You did well not to feed into her pride. So long as she feels she must earn her position, I think she'll serve most adequately. Now all that remains is to watch and wait."

"Sounds like I need to rummage around for some cook books then, and find a recipe for these. And when I do, we're gonna have us a nice little cooking lesson."

She had hoped to learn from her, but with what she had just heard, they'd just have to go at this a little differently, but would hopefully still end with Vale able to cook these. Had to be possible to scrounge up some sort of Cervid recipes somewhere, if she just looked around hard enough.

"You like fish? That's a surprise. I haven't met a lot of ponies who have it like that, outside of Neighpon.

That can be another cooking lesson someday maybe: Sushi. There's some very pony-friendly recipes there, that still involves a fair bit of fish. And some that have a good deal more than regular pony portions. Haven't done that in years, but it might be fun. It also involves rice, and steamed veggies. There could be a fun idea for some variety in your food, with plenty of options if you don't want to try meat."

There was an avenue she didn't think she'd get to explore again, outside of maybe feeding griffons. Personally she didn't really like the taste of fish, so it wasn't for her, but as it seemed Toupé, Ardee, and Elef alike enjoyed this, she might get to try this again. She just hoped she could remember how to do it right. It were surprisingly less simple than it looked, in her experience. Which had a lot to do with presentation as well.

She'd have to figure out if there were rice in the area though. She hadn't a reason to look for it before, so she didn't know. Probably not, but... Eh, she'd see. Might be something to improvise with, someday. For now though, it were just nice to speak with them about things like this, and have a light hearted atmosphere, over the heavy topics that had come up earlier.

Then it was off to get ready for bed with the foals, and they were soon gathered on their bed ready for another story, they looked to Void to lull them to sleep.

Alas, nothing good could last forever, and once the washing up had been done, and Void had made sure that everyone had brushed their teeth, it were time to put the bundles of joy to bed. And they were expecting a story too, which she'd happily oblige with.

"I have a good tale we can read through: Snow Hoof, and the Seven Diamond Dogs. It's a bit lengthy though, so if you get too tired, I promise we will read from where we left off, tomorrow."

It was a classic tale really, though with a bit of a darker tone at times. The boar's heart and the evil stepmother were important, yet somewhat evil parts, but stories did need a villain. And this one surely were, from beginning, til end.

It didn't paint changelings in a good light though, as the evil step mother were one of those. But they could find a more positive tale involving them some other night, and at least this would speak to them in good terms, when it came to diamond dogs. A race they probably didn't know of, and this gave a small glance into how they were, and what they tended to do. With illustrations.

She remembered how she had always been uplifted when it got to the point where the seven diamond dogs came home after a long day of digging for diamonds, to find an exhausted pony laying in their home. Unsure what to do at first, but enamored by her kind heart, and radiant beauty. The little song that followed in the tale, were one she'd sing along with, like her mother had done with her. And she had to admit, a tear would still fall from her eye, when it came to where Snow Hoof had been poisoned by the apple, and laid to rest by the diamond dogs, in a cage carved out of clear diamond.

And the ending, after the galant zebra came and cured her of the ailment that held her still, before taking vengeance upon the evil stepmother. Aaah, she felt like a little foal again, getting to that point.

Which might be tomorrow. It depended on how tired they all were, as this were as she said, a lengthy tale. And if they did not last through it, she'd bookmark they page they had reached calmly, and silently wander from the room, with a big, nearly glowing smile on her face. *sigh* Such adorable little angels, all of them.

"She'd be happy to hear that. Nearly no one could ever tell with how good she were at this. Except zebras of course, but you know how perceptive they tend to be. Heh, the few times she managed to trick a zebra, always made her happy, though she were always nice about it. Nothing vile, or rude. They tended to be either respectful, or indifferent to her, so she had no hard feelings against them.

She always said that we might not be fighters, but that didn't mean we had to be defenseless. Using this skill, and really going to town with transformations, helped her bluff us out of a lot of bad situations."

"How approachable."

She didn't show it, but Penny were actually kind of annoyed by his attitude. She had wanted some kind of evaluation, so she knew what to work with. This wasn't helping her to get any kind of idea how to deal with him. Guess she just had to be patient, and find out later. Maybe she could get some words from the others of their hive to figure it out. Surely some of them would've had some more direct contact with him, at some point.

"Yes, well... Show up bright and early tomorrow for training, and we'll take it from there, alright? 6 sharp."

Penny nodded, and returned to her paperwork. It seemed she were done for now, and she wouldn't do more, as Bling exited the room, and shut the door.

"It honestly went way better than I had expected, but we'll have to see. She's good at keeping things organized, so long as she can apply that to beings, and not get too cold, along with following orders, I think it'll be good. A lot of ifs I guess, but I prefer having hope.

Thanks for the praise too, but I think you did a good deal too. You didn't give her any sort of satisfaction in what she did. She'll never tell, but I think she'd want your approval. It's good that you show it takes more than a tidy setup to earn it.

So... Now we're set up with that, I think that's pretty much it then, right? Give them a day to get their stuff in order, then maybe open up here in 2-3 days? We'd need to make some flyers."

Those who tried the fish seemed intrigued by the idea, nodding to indicate their approval.

They were all asleep at about the part where the dogs had returned to find Snow Hoof, Vale listening in as well, "You know, they have a story much like that one in Cervidas. The evil step mother was a reindeer in my version though."

She sighed, motioning for Void to join her in leaving the room, having taken care of the rest of the cleaning while the story was told, "Now, you owe me a good explanation. I won't wait any longer to hear what you've kept from me all day."

Rasputin nodded, "Believe you me, I don't give praise lightly, or to any who do not deserve it. I hope she'll earn my approval, one day, but until then she will be properly evaluated. But yes, all the preparations appear to be in order, three days should be enough for them to get settled in their new roles, give the casino a trial run with a group of actors, and we'll be ready to open the doors to the populous."

"Best if we all got some rest before then, even if you won't be directly in charge it will expose the hive in a very new way, and you'll need to be ready for unexpected interactions and complications."
