planning New RP (Title Unknown atm) - Throwing Story Ideas

I wanted to start up a new RP here. Problem I've been having is the storyline. What I do know is that there is a gimmick to the way it works. Whether this will have human or ponies OCs is up to debate. But the gimmick is specifically about combat.

Combat:

~~~~~~~~~~~~
When you create your character, you must choose a genre of music. For the sake of example, let's use House Music (Something I might choose when this gets off the ground). That means your songs can only be of that genre.
Selecting a song only provides benefits to your character. It does NOT teach a new style for combat or such. But it can provide a temporary ability or two. For example, if this used pony OCs and one was an earth pony, a song could grant him wings and allow him to fly, but only for the duration you list it within the song. Your character can only fight with what he/she knows, but that does not mean that he/she cannot learn anything new, but also, have it learned through time, not "Getting Black Belt in 3 days flat." There are also no firearms allowed. Hands/hoofs and blunt weapons are allowed. Bladed weapons are allowed to an extent and dependent to the setting.
Now using songs to provide benefits can be used in one way or another.
As another example, I'll use one house track: 49 Percent (Angello and Ingrosso Remix)
There can be up to three different effects that a song can perform, but when you use it, you must say which effect you are using. The three effects are labeled as Normal, Situational, and Party. Normal signifies that is can be normally used. Situational means that if the situation the OC is in fits with the song, the OC can use that situation and provide more benefits that what Normal provides. Party is where the song provides benefits that aid everyone if the OC is with a few others.
So for this song I can have benefits such as:
Normal: Strengthen's OC to have 10% extra strength and defense for the duration of the song.
Situational: If the OC has less than half health (AKA 49%), the song recovers the OC's HP and grants 25% extra strength and defense for the duration of the song.
Party: N/A
Songs don't have to have all three benefit types, but shouldn't be overpowering as well. The above was just an example and can be modified if overpowered.
There are also those songs, specifically from clubs, that have a versus track, combining two songs into one. There are also songs that one OC may have that are the same song, except a different remix. For such songs, keep them limited.
For example, one OC has "I Will Be Here (Original Mix)" and "I Will Be Here (Wolfgang Gartner Remix)". Both must have different normal and/or situational and/or party effects.
If an OC has "The World Is Mine vs. Just Can't Get Enough (Acappella)", "The World Is Mine (Original Mix)", and "I Just Can't Get Enough", then the versus track should have combination effects of the two songs, but watered down to prevent OPness.
Another thing of the OC and his/her songs is that there are "Core Trax" or "Theme Trax" (still thinking of the name) to the OC. A maximum of three songs may be chosen to reflect the OC's beliefs. Another example is if the OC's style is rap and one of his/her Core/Theme Trax is "Armand van Helden's U Don't Know Me". Potentially the OC has had a hard life of people/ponies walking over him/her and how there is a point where someone/pony may call him/her a nobody. And the song kicks in. More often than not, Core/Theme Trax have a situational effect.
To prevent overuse of these songs, the Core/Theme Trax have a great cooldown. And no. There are no items or abilities that will reduce the cooldown time.
tl;dr
Choose genre, songs of genre only.
Songs can provide up to 3 benefits, none overpowered
Versus and different remixes but be planned accordingly and not be overpowered.
Theme/Core Trax are generally more powerful than normal songs, but are very limited.
~~~~~~~~~~~~

As for the story of this RP and what the goal/conflict is, I'm still working on it. If you have any ideas of what could be the plot/conflict/story/setting for this campaign, please drop in some ideas! I will gladly take a listen and debate (in a good way)!

I really hope you all took a read to this and have the time to be a part of an epic game I hope to set up!

It sounds interesting, but how do songs fit into the RP lore? And how exactly would you "use" them?

so like we fight using songs?

The songs only provide benefits to the OC. If it were a pony-themed RP, one could potentially grant wings to an earth pony OC for the duration of the song. As for combat, it would have to be something that the pony/human already knows, such as a martial art or some street fighting style, or even some weapon, and again the weapon used is still up to debate.

In order to "use" a song, it could be something like activating it on an MP3 player that had some sort of magical property, or maybe a wristwatch that can play the music. Maybe the OC prefers combat in his/her club or orchestra center where a DJ Turntable with speakers or a live orchestra can actually play the song. It is all up to the imagination of the player to what he/she can think of. As long as it's not too crazy and not overpowering in one way or another.

Just bumping this to see if anyone else is interested in this!

It sounds fun, but I'm not sure I understand the music thing, let me see if I get the gist of it:

- You choose a song for your OC.

- The song gives buffs based on genre and... other things?

- The buffs are activated when your OC plays the song in whatever way.

- You can use a wider variety of songs as time goes on.

It is also evident you have some kind of stat system in mind, but how are these stats determined? Should I assume you're going by D&D values?

Also are you going to balance the song effects yourself of are you going to let everyone balance their own songs?

Yea. Choose a genre and stick to it. The songs can buff your OC and/or others, can debuff enemies, or even self if you see it fit, and can provide additional effects and/or abilities to your OC. I should have been more specific when detailing some stuff about the song effects/buffs/debuffs/abilities. Buffs are activated whenever you feel like they should, for example, maybe not right away, but when the song kicks in, if you'd like. You are allowed some number of songs from the beginning, but as the story progresses, the OCs will have more songs in their arsenal. I will probably dictate at some point when an OC can add X amount of songs to their list.

I do have SOME kind of stat system, and how it's determined is something I still have to think of, along with the story. And I hadn't thought of D&D values, but I may do something like that.

As for balancing issues, you guys will probably give your songs the effects and try to make them as balanced as possible. I will take a second look at them and offer recommendations to buff up or dumb down the effects.
