The Royal Guard. A joke of a law enforcement organisation?

The Royal Guard. As in the guard of the princesses/equestria or whatever. Are they a joke of a law enforcement organisation? That's only not seen as good since the vast majority of Equestria's population are incredibly loyal to the government and law abiding citizens. Think about it, if the crime rate is at virtually zero, why would you need to invest into a great law enforcement organisation?

Seem to be more of a ceremonial organisation, if anything. Imagine their chief of police makes a speech like this during an 'emergency'. "This comes from the top boys, Celestia's orders. Two ponies are having a friendship problem over what flowers to buy each other. We need to have a nice chat with them to deal with this situation. You have your orders, move out!"

Consider the Royal Guard of Great Britain. They're often viewed somewhat comically because of their stiff seriousness in combination of dramatic dress uniforms from ye old times, but they're an elite fighting force steeped in tradition. The same could be said of the Swiss Guard that defends the Vatican.

They're not really intended as law enforcement, but rather high end security or the last line of defense for a specific objective. That's why we don't see them outside of Canterlot unless escorting a princess.

While the show has depicted them as less than affective, that's due in part to there being very minimal depiction and to meet the show's rating.

That and to let the designated heroes have their time in the spotlight.

And the fact that they hired Zephyr Breeze suggests that they have very low standards.

The royal guard's purpose most likely is to assist royalty in doing tasks and to deter wrongful behavior and villainous acts, not necessarily to enforce laws.

Well, that was more of a poorly executed plot convenience than an actual depiction of the standards of the royal guard.

But to explain it in the show's universe and not the real world universe, Zephyr Breeze was most likely temporarily hired by Shining Armor himself to allow Twilight to easily enter into the castle because Shining Armor knew it would be easy to seduce Zephyr Breeze. Shining Armor intended for that to happen. Also, the royal guard hired Flash Magnus and Shining Armor who both have been proven to be very capable warriors, so they could have high standards after all.

I'm pretty sure Spike said after the reveal that it was Princess Luna who asked Zephyr Breeze to be a guard. Don't forget he trained himself to be a MANE THERAPIST, not a guard so the fact that he suddenly became a guard should have been the first hint that something was up.

About 32 seconds in, Spike flat out says it was Luna who put Zephyr temporarily with the guards!

yeah there was obvious from the very first season that they're supposed to be like the British Royal Guards who keep a stiff non-moving stature as shown here.
