Titan Rising 2,156 June 7, 2012 Share June 7, 2012 (edited) I agree with SkySong. They might be just jokes to some people but they can be disheartening to others. That said, it goes both ways - jokes like that will always be told and it's up to you as a person to be above them and have the self confidence to not let them control you. It doesn't just stop here either. It's the same thing with gay jokes, ginger jokes, women jokes, and even this whole rape trend going on in games where people are basically exchanging the word "raped" for "owned" in games. How apparent it's becoming is especially sad to me, like people don't even give it a second thought either. Page.Turner 940 June 7, 2012 Share June 7, 2012 The OP may be a bit sexist, but I think "misogynistic" is far too strong. He isn't demeaning the fundamental worth of women, he's just supporting one small, negative stereotype of women. Misogynistic means one is characterizing, and therefore advocating, a hatred of women. Of course, and trust me, where I'm from women are not made fun of, I believe that everyone is equal. No offense, and I'm really not trying to sound bitchy or rude, but how can you really be sure of that? It may not be in the paper, on the local news broadcast/website, or even talked about much or seen much but women are made fun of all the time. Even in their own homes by their fathers, brothers, and husbands. A good example are women who are beaten by their boyfriends or husbands. It could go on for years before they even have the courage to talk to someone and get help because they've been manipulated into believing that pain is love and their lives are on the line 24/7 Heck, a good example of equal rights: in Canada, last year I think, women actually gained the LEGAL RIGHT to walk as men do without shirts or bras on. My father didn't even understand, he kept saying, "Well, why the heck would you want to!?" It's not about wanting to. It's about being able to. ... Starswirl the Trixie 975 June 7, 2012 Share June 7, 2012 Misogynistic means one is characterizing, and therefore advocating, a hatred of women. The joke seemed more along the lines of playful mockery and stereotyping then it did promoting misogyny. And things get even more blurry when you consider that the joke was criticizing a perceived sexist stereotype directed at men. #SOCKS
Evilshy 5,090 June 7, 2012 Author Share June 7, 2012 Okay, if you are seriously mad because you've been offended... yeah, good luck in life. This kind of stuff will happen all the time. You just have to ignore it. You think I get offended every time somebody makes a ginger joke, or tells me I don;t have a soul? Every time somebody tells me I'm just an idiot after sex? Every time I'm told that, because of my opinions on the economy (fiscally conservative), I'm a crazy, gun toting, religious fanatic who hates blacks, mexicans, and women? Nope, I move on with my life. Because being offended doesn't do anything except make you miserable. Talking about how X offended you doesn't change anybodies opinion, it doesn't help anything, it just makes you look immature. So yeah, whatever. I told a completely non-serious joke that is apparently sexist. Call me sexist. Call me a misogynistic pig who hates women. I don't care. I'm not, and I don't really give a fuck if you think I am. It depends, is his wife in the kitchen? Now, this joke is in poor taste. There is a line that should not be crossed unless you know for a fact that everybody present knows you are joking and are okay with it. Signature now 99% less edgy! And things get even more blurry when you consider that the joke was criticizing a perceived sexist stereotype directed at men. It's the same kind of playful mockery that still hurts people, no matter what the intention the joke may have had. Though I still believe that it's promoting both misogyny and the very criticism of men you're pointing out. To think that all men believe that all women are ignorant is also an incorrect assumption, but I believe that can be easily debunked because of the nature of the person telling the joke belonging to the category of people the joke was intended for ... Starstream 182 June 7, 2012 Share June 7, 2012 Now, this joke is in poor taste. There is a line that should not be crossed unless you know for a fact that everybody present knows you are joking and are okay with it. So then my point is clear? When you post those kind of jokes you will offend people, no matter how playfully you might intend it to be. The internet is a terrible medium for it because it doesn't carry context or tone well. The joke could work in a room with friends but should really stay off an open forum.

The kitchen joke is everywhere, especially on the internet, carries a very negative connotation, and is well known to be offensive. Men always being wrong does not carry a negative connotation and is not well known to be offensive. In fact, I often hear it used as a joke by women, so from my point of view, it's harmless joke among women. No line was crossed. And I do try not to cross lines in public discussions. You don't see me busting out the holocaust or funeral jokes, do you? EDIT: If we are to continue this, don't expect me to post a response for awhile. I have to leave. Cosmic Charlie 129 June 7, 2012 Share June 7, 2012 (edited) If this joke offends you, you have to learn how to laugh at your yourself. Part of social interaction is people giving each other guff over their differences. The idea is you have to take it on the chin, because no one is taking it seriously except for you. I'm not saying let people walk all over you, but if you're suddenly the butt of an impersonal joke, laugh with your buddies and get the other guy back with something good. This is EXACTLY the reason why "your mom" jokes were invented. Remember the teen dragons in Dragon Quest? People aren't full-on villainous like that most of the time, but you can expect that you're gonna need to grow some thicker skin if you want to survive in this world. Watch some stand-up comedy, laugh at the jokes at everyone else's expense, and when your turn comes, laugh as hard as the rest of them. It will feel good. Edit: Zhinzo, you do have a point about context and medium.
