general questions How protected is my art from ai on this site?

I have been thinking about posting art in the Canterlot Gallery—but I have held off because I am worried others will feed my art to an ai. Considering theres a whole section dedicated to ai I feel like that's a valid concern

Is there a rule against taking others art that was posted in the Canterlot Gallery section and feeding it to an ai? If I put that I don't consent to others taking my art and using it in relations to generative ai and someone does it anyways, would that go against the rules and cause the person who did it to face some kind of punishment? Is there even a rule that people aren't allowed to use art from the Canterlot Gallery for ai? I just would like to know how safe it is to post my art here or not, seeing as the thought of others using my art for ai makes me uncomfortable

Hi! I think it really depends. If we are talking about sharing art solely on this site, then yes, it's a safe place. People here are very respectful and won't steal your art for anything, if they do so, they are discovered and then banned, staff is always with their eyes on people who act strange in the site, and people stealing others’ art goes to that count too. It's not the same case, but a good example was when someone shared AI generated pony images and claimed that those were arts done by them. That person was discovered and banned.

Now, what I can't tell you is if that level of security still continues outside the site. Yes, the site has a lot of trustable and respectful people, with good surveillance from administrators to prevent any scams or other bad things from happening HERE.

But that doesn't mean there won't be people who can still join the site and steal your art without anyone knowing. Such a person doesn't need to steal you art and use them in the site, they can steal and post them in different sites.

So yes, the site is secure, but people can still steal the artwork you post here and use them in different sites.

I recommend adding a “use for AI Training prohibited” advice in the drawings you'll post here, regardless of this site being secure, it's what why I do, because just like how it scares you, it also scares me.

Hope it helps you ~☆

Thank you so much for the reply! This helped a lot and I feel much more comfortable posting my art here now. I'll definitely be adding a disclaimer not to use it for ai training if I decide to post my art. ^^

I think there's nothing wrong with using an image for AI training. Just like humans can learn from images available to the public, the AI should be able to do it too. But if you have a different opinion on this matter, I totally respect it. I don't do AI training, but if I did, I wouldn't use art from people who don't want it to be used.

Also I doubt the people who train their AI models use pictures from this forum. There are places where there's a lot of art easily available and tagged, like Derpibooru, and that's what's used for AI training.

Another thing is using a picture for img2img generation. It's like copying your work, and should only be done with your permission.

I think if you make a clear Terms of service or set rules like you absolutely do not wish for your art to be used with AI machines then this should be enough reason to stay safe;
I think staff will hop in if your art gets taken and put into AI by users but i doubt that will happen given you didn't consent to it. The goal from mlpf is.. not having users be uncomfortable but happy, that's why i doubt they'd let that happen to you.

P.s. if you truly fear this, i think there was programs like glaze or putting a specific type of watermark over the artwork so you can still show it off but keep the unwatermarked one for your trusted friends to see in say DMs?

ngl i would try to ask people first if they are okay with it regarding derpibooru, i've found my OC's on that site too without credit nor saying it would be there. These were commissions, thus artworks i'd paid for and i'd hate for people to use them in AI machines to train it.

Ask before use is always the best option especially if the artwork involves people's OC's. It's always a sensitive topic. <3

Idk just my two cents.. i'd say; you do generate good AI art even if AI is not my cup of tea! <3

#NoAI please be so kind to not throw my artworks into AI machines,
This is something that unsettles me heavily! <3

I added a disclaimer in my bio which I will also add to all of my art posts if I decide to make any. I tried to be as clear and exact as I could when it comes to what I am not okay with, so I hope it works. :Twilight-clap: I have heard of those programs and will consider it. Thank you for this reply!

Also I hope I am not intruding on your other reply—but I have to agree when it comes to derpibooru. I have seen many artists upset to hear their artwork has been reuploaded to that site or used for ai. It can cause distress in others not asking for permission, while it does no harm (and more good!) to ask for permission. ^^

I believe there is something called 'Glaze' which you can use to somewhat protect your art from AI art theives. I'd recommend everyone who posts their art anywhere online no matter where it is to look into stuff like this to protect their stuff from such things.

I believe it is inevitable that others will use your artwork for AI training. The people on this forum are principled and would not do such a thing,
but you cannot prevent others from using your work to train AI models elsewhere.  :worry:

I believe adding ‘Do not use my work to train AI’ to your own work is a measure that may deter the principled but not the unscrupulous.
As long as someone with no scruples believes your work has value for AI training, they will still find a way to use it for that purpose. :adorkable:

Personally, I do not oppose others using my arts to train AI, as I believe the principles of machine learning and human learning are similar,
both involving neural network connections.
However, I oppose those who disregard creators' objections and plagiarise works with impunity. :heynow:
