You realize that wasn't Princess Luna but Nightmare Moon, a mockery of the ruler of the night, right? If your going to do a Solar Empire versus Lunar Republic get the facts right. It was not Luna that the Elements of Harmony fought but a dark mare named Nightmare Moon, Luna told Twilight quite plainly that ponies should fear Nightmare Moon. She clearly showed remorse for her actions.

 

Realistically it would be a deception and lies that lead to a civil war, perhaps at the hands of another wishing for Equestria to fall into conflict and suffering. Yet if that is the roleplay your playing... well then that is your choice. If I were to join my OCs would be members of the Solar Empire. One would have an adviser position (because she is a seer) while the other would be a spy/infiltrator.

Twilight is the most magically powerful unicorn in Equestria, so your pony would reasonably have to be weaker then she is.

and according to the original DM, Nightmare Moon came, the elements defeated her, however, she warned them of what was to come of Equestria if they left her sister in charge, and what she could do if she were Princess, the mane 6 were split, and each joined the side they pleased.

Though to be honest I really hope Twilight and friends realize their mistake and join together, even if it means turning against the princesses. Few things should be able to go between their friendship, and a civil war is not one of them. As the Elements of Harmony they should work to keep Equestria together as well as the princesses.
