"Bukajiri," Maven said instantly, "We just fought that imp. He cut me with some demon magic: that would've been the perfect time to get a Nightfall Sample. I did flatten him, after all. The idiot got it in his head that I couldn't dodge a bright, glowing sphere and decided to jump in front of it."

Jack looked back at Hirue's corpse. "I've seen that kind of demon before. They have almost no spiritual awareness, wich explains why he underestimated you so greatly. But I don't think it could have found with its senses alone. Whoever summoned him must have given him aid. They do have an incredible sense of smell. Do you know of anyone who would be able to provide him with a sample of your scent, like a lock of hair or piece of clothes?"

 

"It's Butajiri, Maven. And what she is saying is true. Once she was down, I got sliced up on my right side-"

He indicated towards his shoulder and his right side.

"- And he may have gotten away with bits of my uniform. But I don't know where he is..."

Nightfall started pacing, trying to think of the "bad" places around the city.

"And if he is summoning demons with that sword, that would explain the weakness of the Vail. If this continues, he won't even be able to reverse what he's done." Jack tapped the floor a few times with the tip of his hoof.

"All that talk and he didn't even get the kill! Hirue forgets what makes our race so feared." The unknown voice said to Butajiri.

 

"And what would you suggest that we do, Risho?"

 

"Let me kill them. I know exactly how to do it. I can kill them all with one dirty trick!"

Den said in a supiciously Sapphire voice, "And then, no more brownies," and sighed. Then he covered his mouth, looking irritated.

 

Maven looked at Jack, "He wants us dead. Most ponies have a reason for that. I could see a vendetta but it doesn't sound quite right."

Nightfall stopped pacing, and looked at the group.

"No, he is not after you lot.. He's after me. I'm an alicorn. He claims if he kills an alicorn, he'll gain immense fame. He wants me dead."

He looked at their faces, waiting for a reaction. Why did he not think of this before?

"He targeted you first because you are in his way and he thought you were the weakest of us." Jack corrected, "This has gone beyond killing you. He's trying to buy time so that he can destroy the Vale. The Banshee Shriek is more than just a weapon. Besides, if he wanted to kill you for fame, don't you think he'd do it himself?"

Maven looked around and sighed, shuffling her feet, "So out of all of us here, Nightfall is now demon-fuled, Den and Sapphire are unnatrually strong, and immune to insanity, You, Jack, you're you. So that leaves me; I can't really take a hit, I'm not really strong, I just play music." She starts feeling slightly rejected; like the weakest link.

Nightfall looked over at Maven and shook her shoulder.

"Maven! You're music fuels all of us here! Stop beating yourself up!"

Nightfall knew his demon-power made him stronger. And it was true; Den/Sapphire did seem a bit stronger. But they couldn't work in harmony together without Maven, and Nightfall felt like Maven's presence lifted his spirits a bit.

"It may be wise to leave before Butajiri sends more demons. He most likely knows that we're here." Jack said, attempting to break the awkwardness of the conversation. He leaned over and whispered to Nightfall, "Best not say anything about the bugs. Den and Maven still can't see them."

Maven stares at Jack, "Fine. I still want to know if my description was accurate, though. You seem to have a good run on skill levle, as it were. Either way, I'd rather not have the concert hall leveled. There would be more than one disapointed ponies." She sighed deeply, exiting the building.

A shadowy figure watched Maven leaving the Concert Hall. It was twice as tall as a pony and stood upright rather than on all four limbs. "I will have to wait until Den is with them. Without him this will never work." the figure said to itself, "I hate waiting! Why do these ponies have to be so slow."

Octavinyl woke up in a hospital bed and what seemed like quite a while. She quickly rubbed her eyes and tried to get herself out of the bed covers and onto the cold floor. "Well that was the most relaxing sleep I've ever had. Not to mention it seemed pretty long." She thought as she stretched out and began flying towards the door.

 

"I still got nothing..." Scratch said to himself as he got out of his apartment room.

Den shrugged to Jack and Nightfall and went outside to comfort Maven. "Hey, you gotta gift, and you use it. You're strong enough to break a flute over somepony's head. Have more faith in yourself."

 

She sighed and shrugged, "Den, my problem is more of a lonliness one. You can search Sapphires memories, you know this to be true."

 

He nodded, shrugging.

Jack followed Den but said nothing.

 

 

 

"good, good!" the figure said from the shadows, "Just one more re hid pony and I can have my fun. I will succeed where Hirue's failed. Butajiri's plan is flawless. This world will soon belong to the demon race!" He fiddled with something in his left hand.

Den shivered, something didn't feel right. "Jack, do you... sense anything. I've got a bad feeling. Something just... isn't right."

 

Maven rolled her eyes and sighed. "You worry to much Den. Sometimes I wonder how Sapphire even spawned offa you. Serriously, you're like, polar opposites."

"No, he's right." Jack said, "we're being watched by something with demon energy. Fortunately, not a lot of energy, but enough to be a problem. Be very cautious. I don't know what or where it's coming from, but it's very close to us now. If were lucky and keep level heads, we could play this to our advantage."

Den nods and Maven rolls her eyes again. "Of course I'm wrong. He's got Pinkie sense," she grumbles. Den grins from ear to ear and pretends his tail is shaking. "That means Demon, for your information Maven." She groans at the lame joke and grabs her harmonica.

"Oh my, I am so careless to be detected by such pathetic ponies." Risho said as he stepped from the shadows. He walked on only two legs and used one of his claws to grip a black remote. He was tall, and had grey, leathery skin. "Hirue may go so low as to dress himself up as one of you miserable worms, but I prefer my superior demon form." He eyed the remote in his hand which had only one button. "I know about the foal that your cousin is taking care of, Den. My brother has watched him for quite some time now and he is very anxious to bite off his head!" he took his eyes off the remote and eyed the ponies. "if I press this button, my brother will kill the boy, and your cousin, and he will take his time to do it. You understand now, do what I say or the boy dies! Now I want you to stand still and let me do as I please! No sudden movements..." he turned to maven, "and no music!"

Den nodded slowly. Inside, he felt Sapphire trying to break the barriers he'd thrown up and attack the 'evil, mean pony thing.' He stood defiantly, "What do you want? A fair fight?" He spat off to the side, "You demons, you all think you're sooooo strong. You're soooo superior, but when it comes down to it, you still have to make plots to do anything. I swear you have to kidnap a shop owner's grandmother just to buy groceries. So what are you're 'reasonable' demands?"

Risho laughed at the four ponies in front of him. "I don't want a fair fight at all." he said. He lifted one leg in the air as if he was standing on a platform. "I won't risk enjoying myself any longer. Den, I want you to lick the scum off my boot. I just can't seem to keep it clean." He extended his claws to form tiny blades. "After that I will find a few more fun things for you to do. Then I will cut off your head and spare your pet child."

"I'd much sooner like you're balls," he said, sitting and crossing his hooves. He glared at the demon, "I'm insane, a shape shifter, but I'm not a bi*ch. Torture me, torment me, not enslave me. You want somepony ta clean yer boots, ya' best be a-findin' a shoe shiner."

 

Meanwhile, Neil was carrying the foal to the new hospital he'd heard about. He'd heard that they were fully functional. "Hang in there kid, almost there."

Nightfall stepped forth.

"All right, demon. I don't care for your name, I'll call you what you are! I don't want or need any demons wreaking havoc in this city! Just tell once, or die like that other demon: who sent you, and for what purpose?"

Nightfall snorted. The back of his mind, however, was still trying to figure out how to comfort Maven. It was doing this because the demon within him gave him the ability to do harder tasks while still "multi-tasking."

Risho tightened his grip on the button. "You will do what I say if you care for their lives!" he rubbed the button with his thumb. "I don't care what powers you have! Why train to be the best when you can have one of these? Now lick my boots before I press the button!"

He walked up to him and took a boot of. He made as if to lick it, and then threw the shoe at the hoof, knocking the button out of his hands; At this point he was Sapphire. "He wans't talking to you silly," she said, lightly cathing the buton and showing her cutie-mark, "He was talking to me." She pulled out a short silver daggar. "I've locked Den up in a tight little prison inside his skull. You'll have to reason with me now. Which is impossible; I'm not reasonable. Brownie?"

"I'd rather you go back to hell, demon."

Nightfall was surprised at Sapphire. He never really expected her to do such a thing. But he knew she was just trying to protect him and the others.

"No, no, she's quite right. Don't try to reason with her. Trust me, I would know."
