I frequently edit my new posts to fix grammatical errors or to reword stuff, so sorry if I make it look like I'm forging my messages to change the meaning of anyone's replies or something.

i just program in C++ and C# since they can actually count towards getting a job in software development, plus this way you have complete control over format, and platforms. so it could run on any OS but i'll look into it XD

While both of those are much more powerful languages, BYOND is a lot easier to learn, you can literally skim a tutorial and you'll be good to go. :P It's got syntax similar to Python.

python is quick, and generally for hacking ^^

but with power comes responsibility and by that i mean practice, but in the end is good to have better flexibility but only needed if it is a profession you wish to persue,

i'm fine if people want a simple language, but i don't think they should try to go anywhere but hobbies with it.

I think if you want simple and good for games you go for Java or java script, that gives you good flexibility, structure, and easy web/server development for online gaming.

EDIT: I just read through the terms glossary and looked at the formatting... i find it similar to TI-Basic

But it's flexibility isn't there, it cuts out many terms, or switches the meanings or functions ^^

but... it is a semi strong language capable of making games yes, but lacks many other intagers, variables and other key terms to really speed up game play and manipulation

i do however think it is good enough and simple enough for people that want to learn or start learning scripting and development to get a head start.

EDIT EDIT: and i found the syntax to be most similar to VB (visual basic. from MSDN)

It's similar to VB too, but it did remind me a bit of Python. It's designed for making games exclusively, so it doesn't have a lot of advanced functions of other languages, and yeah, it is pretty slow paced. But it is very easy to learn, and it's possible to make actual 2D MMO games without much work - NEStalgia is a good example of a popular one. :P

So while you're right that this isn't useful if you want to become a professional programmer, it's nice as a first language so you learn about basic concepts such as indentations and variables.

I've not had too much experience developing with BYOND as I didn't feel learning it would be worth my time, but I have played some of the games people have made for it. Some are pretty cool - it's interesting to see what people can do with it.

If you ever feel like making your own 2D MMO then I really do suggest it. It's very easy to learn, barely takes a few days, and the support forums are active. :P

I'm not really big on the 2D scene anymore, although I'd really like to be able to make my own 2D games. I've been doing some 3D modeling for a year or two now and have started making my own games using Unity 3D with the help of tutorials (for coding). But hey, maybe I'll look into it some more when I have a huge chunk of free time. I don't see why not.

(A bit off topic, I guess): Do you know any languages besides Dream Maker? I purchased a book on basic C++ through game dev, but it's extremely confusing and I have a short attention span.
