MLP Royals similar to Greek Gods.

The Royal bloodline in MLP seems to be very similar to the ancient Greek Gods.

I've been thinking a bit about this, and it doesn't seem like it's just another coincidence.

----------

Celestia = Zeus

Zeus is the most powerful god of the bunch, and rules all.

Same applies to Celestia.

Luna = Artemis

Artemis is the Goddess of hunting & the moon.

The 'hunting' aspect kinda explains her choice of armor when she appears as Nightmare Moon.

Cadence = Aphrodite

Aphrodite is the Goddess of Love and is married to Hephaestus

Love is Cadence's element, and she's married to Shining Armor.

Shining Armor = Hephaestus

Hephaestus is the God of metalwork, so he made shields/swords etc. and he was crippled.

Shining Armor produced a forcefield surrounding Canterlot and eventually lost the power to do so, effectively leaving him crippled.

Prince Blueblood = Narcissus

Narcissus is not a god, but he fell in love with his own reflection.

This is similar to Prince Blueblood's vain behavior, and how it is known that he is a prince but is mentioned as being far removed from the royal bloodline in the trading card sets.

----------

What do you guys think? Huge coincidence or not?

I'm quite surprised you didn't put out a Discord/Eris placement on that there. A good chunk of fic readers or people into the fandom a fair bit know of Discords feminine side/ sister/ wife or whatever you want it to be as Eris but not a lot know of Eris as the actual God(ess) of Chaos in Greek Mythology.

So shame on you for not mentioning that!

I think it's a bit of a stretch in some regards, but those are some very insightful observations. I'll be curious to see any further royals in the future, and seeing if this can match any of them, as well in some way.

I don't have the impression Lauren Faust intentionally sought to emulate the Greek/Roman pantheon with the royal princesses. The allusions to some form of divinity---at least in the classical sense---do exist. That the world would effectively cease to function without Celestia and Luna accentuates their elevated roles.

Still not sure they're using the Greek's Mythology on the show as material?

In one episode there is mentioning of Tartarus which is guarded by Cerberus. Tartarus is the deepest part of hell, or in Greek Mytho's, The Underworld.

I believe the MLP writers are using the Greek Mytho's to better enrich the MLP world, it sure is more interesting to see this than some of the stuff they've done in the past that's for sure.

I, personally, can't wait to see if they put in the freaking Titans to the show! Who's with me on that one!

Well aware of Tartarus, and need no convincing xP Greek Mythology like mythology in general is used all over this show, just look at all the mythological creatures. I was referring to the specific god to royals descriptions in my 'stretch' comment.

To be clear, the topic is not about whether MLP utilizes Ancient Greek mythology in general. That point is undisputed due to the points you just raised. Whether or not that reflects upon the pony royalty is another matter entirely.

(Chaotic Discord beat me to the punch!)

I was merely adding in some more input to better state the usage of the Greek's God/Goddess places in the show.

Seeing that they are intentionally using the Greek's Mythology here in the show I believe everyone here can properly assume that's where Discord came from, seeing as he is the God of Chaos and what not, though I do not believe he is the God of the chaotic Void, but more in line with Eris here.

I'm still trying to see how Celestia and Luna come to play here. Plus, does Chrysalis come into play at all? I agree with OP's placement with Cadence and Blueblood though, that makes proper sense. Iffy on Shining since he was married into royalty here, not royalty in the first place.

Did you know that Lauren Faust's inspiration drew from other fictional works based on mythology? For example, Canterlot was directly inspired from The Lord of the Rings. I haven't watched the movie trilogy to know the exact city from which it was inspired from, but other works of fantasy and mythology greatly influenced the creation of FIM's episodes and so it wouldn't be a completely stretch to think that the greek gods also influenced the royals.

This thread appears to be related to the My Little Pony franchise and/or the Bronydom in general. Thus, it has been sentenced to Sugarcube Corner.

This is an automatically generated message, by the way.

Omg.

Mindsplosion.

That actually makes sense. Cool idea, it's probable that the show makers did base them off of those greek gods.

That much I knew. The fact that Canterlot is a play on "Camelot" is more than enough indication that Lauren is up on her myths and histories.

It's not a complete stretch, but I'm not terribly convinced she was aiming specifically for the Greek/Roman gods with Celestia and Luna.

Well I have seen a character in the show that might have been based off of a greek myth. This character is not a royal pony or a greek god, but has anyone noticed how Pound Cake is kinda like Hercules? Just look at him. Pound Cake is a pegasus and he has super strength. Also Pegasus seem to always have a connection with greek myths.

Now I don't know much about Hercules. I am just basing this off of the Disney movie, but still it's kind of close.
