Twilight Sparkle walked around the halls of the Canterlot Castle, ever since the catastrophic events of Luna succeeding from Celestia's reign, and part of her friends leaving alongside Nightmare Moon, she had hardly taken any rest, she had studied spells more than ever. She could say the same about her friends, her only REAL Friends, Pinkie and Rainbow Dash, they had also trained far more than ever, and they probably hadn't had any rest either. Spike walked alongside her, carrying a scroll and a quill. She stopped walking and let out a sigh as she looked at the small purple dragon "Spike?" she asked her voice hardly audible even though they were the only ones in the hall besides the guards at ever door. "Yeah Twi?" he asked stopping automatically to glare at her "Take a letter, please" She said taking a look around the hall as she commenced to walk again. "Ahem, Dear Princess Celestia, I am pleased to announce that I've given out order to all of the Solar Mages, our plans to attack the Dragon Mountain, the hologram spell will hopefully distract the Lunar troops, then we'll be able to send the Solar Infantry, as directed by Pinkie, to retrieve captured Solar Soldiers. Your faithful Student, Twilight Sparkle" She finished looking at one of the stained glass windows, "faithful....student, Twilight Sparkle! There" He repeated, and finished off by blowing a green flame into the scroll and watched as they both watched it disappear.

~~~
Celestia sat in her throne, two royal guards stood motionless in front of the doors, another two guards, each of them at her side, while a large map of Equestria levitated in front of her. A sudden scroll appeared in front of her, breaking her concentration  and her map fell to the ground, she levitated the scroll open as she read Twilight's letter. She closed her eyes for a few seconds before levitating a quill in front of a new scroll *Dear Faithful Student, I'm pleased with your work, if this works, perhaps we'll be able to regain full control over Ponyville. I will do everything in my power to make sure all goes according to plan. Your mentor, Princess Celestia* She opened her eyes and the scroll disappeared. She levitated the map in front of her and resumed her planning.
"In formation! Victoria pro Sol! Beat the curs back to their wretched wall!"
Steeleye Sungazer strode back and forth behind his front lines, organizing his troops. The Solar Mages, while largely a long ranged and support unit, would be fearsome in all methods of battle if he had anything to say for it. Currently, Steeleye was training them, not by drills, but by combat. In his eyes, no amount of firing spells at straw dummies would ever make his troops effective in battle. Only through the harsh meatgrinder of war would anything of worth ever arise. It was a harsh reality, one that did not always sit well with him. Despite the abundance of healers in his forces, casualties would soon mount. Still, his troops were not ready to face true conflict, so on he pressed.
"Alternating lines fire in unison! Front ranks! That sheild wall will remain intact or I swear to Celestia I will use your BODIES as sheilds!"
Currently situated in one of the many hot-zones along the rebel border, a brutal fight was being waged between the hammer and the anvil. This particular trouble area had buldged far to close to Canterlot, so now the Sun's Wrath was going to cleanse it. On the rebel side stood a massive fortress of solid stone, essentially carved from the hillside. Thus far, the war had become a stalemate. Fortresses like these now lined the border, both nation constantly battering their soldiers agaisnt the stone walls. If things went on like this, there would be no winner, only a desolate land sucked completely dry by war. Steeleye was not going to allow that, for his loyalty to his beloved Princess was more steadfast as the stone he was now pulling to the ground bit by bit.
The rebels had set up entrenched positions all along the hillside, tunnels ran between these positions like a rabbits warren. Thus far, his forces had gained ground, but the steady rate of retaliation coming from the hill was taking its toll. The forest provided some cover, but soon all the leaves would be stripped and it would become a killing ground. This had to end soon; Steeleye was not going to accept a loss. Calling back his forces (about five thousand in all in comparison to the rebel's eight hundred) too time, but his plan required perfect placement and timing.
The rebels knew they could afford to wait out a seige. They had supplies to last them a long time from now and nothing the Solars had throw at them had gotten far. Though magical bolts rained from the sky, it onyl ever scratched the surface. Now they watched at the Solar Mages settled into a solid ring just outside of retaliation range, apparently set on waiting it out. What they had not anticipated was the specific placement of each and every pony brought against them. From the highest lookout, a faint outline could be seen, but made no sense. From the air however, it was organization on a massive scale. Outlined by the bodies of ponies was a massive rune, shaped like an open Eye. Four lines protruded to the north, south, east, and west, centered on the middle of the hill.
Steeleye himself had donned a helmet with viser to watch what followed. He could not help but feel ashamed for what he was doing, but his conviction gave him no other choice. At high noon, when the sun was highest in the sky, the spell was cast, unneccesary, but poetic. Around the entire rune, unicorns would light their horns in fire, flowing along the lines like a sea of flames. All this magic flowed to a small circle of elite magicians in the east-most edge, the direction of the sun. This part was actually neccesary for what followed. Steeleye himself supplied no magic, but watched in silence as the magic became a pillar of pure energy, then vanished. Confusion spread through both sides for a moment, they all thought the spell had failed.
Out of the sky, it seemed that a single arrow flew down, puncturing the top of the hill and seeking far beneath its foundations. Nothing happened for a moment, then the true effects began. The hill, in simple terms, imploded. A solid wave of force pushed out from the projectile's resting spot, throwing the entire hill into the air. When this turned off, the whole mass of upset dirt, metal, stone collapsed back to the ground, crushing every living thing inside of it. Dust billowed out in a thin cloud, coating those nearest in a thin layer of grime. Those next to Steeleye could not face him for a moment, frozen by the sheer cruelty of this attack. Nothing inside would survive, they knew there would be no searching for prisoners. Anything that still breathed rebellion would die.
This was not a dispute between two sisters that would be settled with peace. This was complete, and total, war.
Rag Gemini stood with her brother Tag at her side, both standing in several rows behind the front line. They both carried sizable packs, and were lopping small yellow orbs (From the packs) with smiles inscribed upon them into the midst of the blue-clad troops that stood in front of them. They seemed desperate to reach the rune that the Solar General was creating, and it was the Geminis' job, along with another sizable contingent, to make sure they didn't get there. Everywhere a grinning orb was thrown, a dust cloud, and a red mist, soon followed.
As the number of Solar Soldiers between the Twins and those clad in the dark armor of the night lessened, Rag and Tag drew their weapons. For Rag, a short sword and shield; for Tag, a mace and shield. As they were about to fill the holes in the front line, perfectly willing to die for Celestia, they were called back. The Twins had seen to it, at the beginning of this battle, that a line would be placed behind the Solar Troops. As they fled, the line of freshly dug earth was not trodden upon. The enemy, however, was not aware of the presence of several mines in the ground there. As the Solar Troops safely cleared the Mine Line, the Twins taking up the rear, the Lunar troops pursuing them, unaware of the trap, went up in flames. After a resounding cheer from the Twins' contingent, they watched in awe as the mountain slid out from under the castle, which simply vanished from existence into an enormous dust cloud. They left that day, proud of the Triumph of the Sun they had achieved for their kingdom.
Yavolin walked to the nearest requiting station for the NLR, he wanted to be in the air force  but also he wanted to be close to Luna. He handed the officer his note that Luna gave him he didn't know why but she told him that it was very important that he gives them the note.
Sergeant Golden Age sat amongst his fellow soldiers in a small valley. The sounds of distant battle now became constant. Many were wondering why they were sitting while their brothers could be getting massacred. Golden Age responded to this with a single word, Orders.
He had not heard from his commander, thus he ordered his men to break ranks and rest for orders. He was confident that the Solar ranks would break and run before their second volley. They were certainly no match for the Lunar Republic! He frequently spoke words of reassurence, telling his men that the war would be over within a week. He spoke words of a feeling Solar force, running back to Celestia, spirits broken. He then proceeded to place his hat over his face and dozed to sleep.
Sunbeam plodded along in the footsteps of his commanding officer, a look of intense excitement donning his face. "Sir, it's Golden Age! THE Sergeant Golden Age! We can't let that dirty traitor spend another moment in sweet Celestia's sun! He deserves to die a traitor's death! We just need to go sneak up on those cursed Luna-lovers and-"
The officer turned around and stuck out a hoof in Sunbeam's face. "First off, Private Sunbeam, Golden Age is not a 'dirty traitor'. He resigned and switched allegiances. We've changed all our codes; even if he wanted to relay any classified information to the Lunar Republic it would all be outdated. Second, these are rebels, not monsters. We simply show them the power of the Solar Empire and watch as they come begging for forgiveness. This will be a quick war, son. Trust me."
Sunbeam huffed. "But it is a war, sir. And that means we need to fight! We aren't getting anything done by sitting on our flanks! Golden Age and his troops are just a couple miles away. We can take them by surprise-"
"The answer is no, Private Sunbeam. End of discussion." With these final words, the officer turned and trotted away.
Sunbeam heaved another great sigh. War was supposed to be exciting! He was supposed to be out on the front lines, smiting those traitorous ponies in the name of benevolent Celestia. Instead, he was the camp water-pony in a no-name valley while legacies were established all around him. The only idea keeping him from going insane with boredom was the thought that, perhaps, Golden Age himself would move his troops - and Sunbeam would be there to meet him.
Bridget Steel had been forced to take on the biggest challenge of her life. As the head of the Rail Ministry, she knew that her side would help turn the tide of the war, as did Princess Luna. Bridget read the letter yet another time:
      Dear Chief Steel,
     The NLR would like to enlist you for our service. We know that you know precisely where every weak point in every bridge in the
   Kingdom lies, as well as how to cripple all other key spots in the rail network. Your support is essential for the NLR's campaign.
   Please consider supporting us.
   Princess Luna
Bridget had just earned her promotion to Chief of the Rail Ministry last year. This was her dream job. And while she sympathized with the NLR, she couldn't risk it.
----
At the Royal Palace,  Bridget showed Princess Celestia the letter and told the Princess that she was honored to hold her position and would not let her loyalty fade. Princess Celestia issued her orders.
"1/4 of your staff has defected. Eventually they will be able to figure out how to exploit the bridges. Go to Manehattan. Strengthen the railroad bridge connecting the city to the rest of Equestria. After that, I want the network to be redesigned so that there are alternate routes between cities in case of an attack. Your staff is to institute new security measures on all trains. I suggest you head out soon."
Bridget Steel gathered her top staff and her guards toward her office, gathered the blueprints she needed as well as a set of fakes to hand over in the event of a capture and headed off towards Manehattan.
Hours passed, and still no word from their commander. Even Golden Age himself was getting anxious and this point. He was raring to march into battle.
Eventually, he couldn't wait any longer. He gathered up his small squad and led them on a reconnaissance mission through the valley. He was hoping to find two things, one being his commander so they could get a bloody move on, and two being any possible Solar reserves.
"Remember lads, don't shoot, make yourselves unseen. It's four against Celestia-knows-how-many. If we see anything, we'll head back to camp." Golden whispered as they trekked through the valley.
At last, Golden Age and his squad came upon what they were looking for, troops. Below their eyes was an entire camp swarming with Solar forces. It was bigger than he had expected, he thought most of Celestia's forces would've been in battle.
"Right, this oughta do it, let's head back." He spoke.
Back in camp, he began to take charge, being the highest ranking soldier there. He posted pickets by the edge of their encampment and had his entire force load their muskets. They then returned to their furlough-like state.
"Commander Applejack, please report to our chambers to discuss tactics and maneuvers. We thank you."
Luna massaged her head with her hoof. War was, in her opinion, most famous for giving whoever was in charge a headache of massive proportion. He looked at the map and position of troops again. If only we could get our generals to move quicker that 10 miles a day... then we could start to outflank them...
She waited patiently for Applejack to come...
Luna massaged her head with her hoof. War was, in her opinion, most famous for giving whoever was in charge a headache of massive proportion. He looked at the map and position of troops again. If only we could get our generals to move quicker that 10 miles a day... then we could start to outflank them...
She waited patiently for Applejack to come...
Applejack looked out over the valley. They had pushed hard to try and take ponyville but thus far had been met with heavy resistance and she knew why. Ponyville was much much more than just a piece of land for everypony. It was where her friends all met, where she grew up, where Sweet Apple Acres still sat, though most of the apple trees had started to die. If she was honest with herself she knew they were still her friends. Always would be, but they had each had to make a choice and take a stand. She didn't understand why Rainbow Dash and Pinkie Pie sided with Celestia. How could they? How could they side with someone who found it easier to ship her SISTER to the Moon rather then use the elements of Harmony to free her like we all did later. She once held respect for Celestia but when it came time to choose, Luna was the obvuous choice.. It had not ended well at all between her friends.
None of that really mattered now. Memories usually flooded her mind when she looked out toward Ponyville. She had a plan to retake at least the southern area of Ponyville. She had been training her ground forces for weeks, trial and error, testing weaknesses. In a way, War was like applebucking. Hit something hard enough and fast enough, you can usually get them to fall.
She received the communication from Luna and nodded to herself. "What in tarnation is she wantin' to talk 'bout now? Don't she know were tryin' to win a war here?"
She sighed and shucked off her annoyance. Luna was good pony folk, but she was excited and terrified of the battle about to happen. She turned, looking rather stoic in the fancy Generals outfit Rarity made her and found her way to Luna's Chambers.
Princess Celestia:
Celestia was in her afternoon relaxation qaurters consulting a few dozen minor officials about the state of the kingdom when she got the news. Word by mouth had been sporadic and unrealiable, eye witness accounts were not existent, all thy had was a grainy five second loop hastily transcribed onto a flimsy scroll via magic. At first, it was simply an image depicting one of the many hill fortresses lining the Kingdoms' borders. Then a single flash of light fell from the sky and disappeared into the hill, followed by a slaughter of massive proportionss. All attendants and staff were immeadiately dismissed, allowing her to contemplate the meaning and repercussions of this image.
She had always wanted her little sister to stay by her side, she was still too young and immature to handle her given responsibilities. The whole escapade a thousand years ago had only served to cement her opinions on that matter. So she had taken control of everything and everypony, giving her sister a while to cool down on the moon. A thousand years was no short span by any measure, but a mere second of Celestia and Luna's lifespan. When she had returned, she had hoped that Luna would be willing to return with no further quarrel. Now this. Her sister had raised nearly half the land in rebellion and ponies killed each other senselessly due to mountains of propoganda and revenge. The image in front of her made her gut clench, horrified thar such a thing could happen.
Further details trickled in, reports of a strict closed-mouth policy amongst a wide section of her forces, rumours of a breach opening in the middle of the contention zones, and a mountain of rubble filled with bbodies. After careful review, she found the pony responsible: General Steeleye Sungazer, one of her most staunch supporters and a powerful magician in his own right. For half and hour she meditated in solitude, rolling the issue over in her mind. If she let this go unpunished, surely the Lunar Republic would be filled with outrage and attack with even more ferocity. But pulling out one of her most senior commanders was folly, only leading to instability.
When she decided on her course of  action, she sent a note to her student Twilight:
"Dearest student,
        It had come to my attention that as of late an action of total war has been preformed by one of my senior commanders: General Steeleye Sungazer. Using the combined might of his Solar Mages, he has destroyed the Lunar Bastion complex along the border, killing all inhabitants in moments. It grieves me to hear of such things and as such calls for immeadiate action. This was must end NOW Twilight, before actions such as this are the end of us all. Please send my regards to General Steeleye along with your own person. Henceforth, I wish you to personally oversee his actions. While you are not to have command, reign in his progress when atrocities such as become possible.
        Still Twilight, though it pains me to say this, I am ordering an invasion be made through the newly opened breach along the Republic's border. The plans to attack Dragon Mountain will remain the same, but a large number of ponies are being relgated to General Steeleye's command until further notice.
Your mentor, Princess Celestia."
Steeleye Sungazer:
While ultimately suprised by his Princess's decision to send Twilight as a personal liason, Steeleye did feel a certain sense of satisfaction. It meant that the Princess herself had taken notice of his victory, so much so that she sent her best student to his side. While he had no real aspirations to Princess Celestia's heart, he would settle for coming closer to her side through her favored mare. In the meantime, preparations had gone well. Lunar forces had been a little sluggish to realize what had happened, and new fortifications had been set up prior to any retaliation. In addition, these new defenses included a strong anti-magical barrier. Its sole purpose was to prevent a repeat of what had happened to the Lunar defenders. While he was in his tent planning his next move, he made the decision to arrange a personal bodyguard.
Among those chosen for this task were Rag and Tag, two capable soldiers that had proven themselves in the recent action.
Golden Age was anxious. He had no doubt that he had some leadership. Some, but not enough to be called an officer. And where was his officer anyhow? Dead, missing? Turned Tail? "Bloody hell" he cursed under his breath.
Golden Age proceeded to stand up and address his men. "Attention, company!" His men stood erect, at attention.
"I haven't the slightest Idea where our CO is. And since I am the highest ranking individual here, I assume I am in command you of all for the time being." His men nodded and agreed. "Right" Golden Age continued "After a recent scouting mission, we've found there's an entire camp of Solar reserves a few miles away from here. I want this encampment fortified for any attack. We will build earthworks around here, post more pickets, and be on alert. We're going to let them come to us."
His men soon broke ranks and began building.
Golden Age took out a quill pen and began to write.
Your Highness,
Upon investigation, I have discovered a large enemy encampment not far from out position. In addition, our officer has gone missing, leaving me in command. My men are currently fortifying our position in case of an attack. I write to you for advice on the situation. Should I attack the encampment, or wait for an upcoming attack?
Rag and Tag were attending to business after the battle when a courier arrived, proclaiming a message. "Private Gemini and Private Gemini, you have been given the honor to serve in General Sungazer's personal guard. Please report to his tent immediately." They finished up with their maintenence first; Rag was sharpening her broadsword with a whetstone and Tag was refilling his bomb bag with their signature Grinning Orbs. Upon completion, they made their way to the Command Tent.
The Twins soon discovered that they were not alone in being chosen for the General's guard, and joined the end of the straight line of other distinguished soldiers that had gathered outside the Command Tent, awaiting the General to emerge and address them.
As Applejack walked in, Luna sighed. "Hello, Applejack. We hope that you have been met with success." She turned to face her, with a table with a map of Equestria. "We think that, although Ponyville is a prime target, that too big of a power struggle has opened up there. Therefore, we suggest that we move down the border. An attack on Baltimare would be worth the effort. There hast been little activity down there, and we think that even just two or three corps [OOC: pronounced cores, numbering about 10,000 troops] would be able to take the city." She turned back. "Also, to aid with thy attack of Ponyville, we are sending with thee two divisions of air troops and a division of the Lunar Mages." She bowed her head and glanced at the map. "What is thy opinion on the war so far?"
"What is thy opinion on the war so far?"
Applejack looked at the map for a hard moment. She may have been a simple Farm girl, but she knew land layouts and everyone knew the Highground was always prefered. She considered the Princesses words before finally looking upon her.
"Beg pardon Princess but I reckon I have a plan that would all but seal the deal in Baltimare. The battle fer Ponyville is an emotional one. Both sides want it on principal. So, I say let them have it. They done know we ain't just gonna hand it over, but give'em hope they can take it and let them make a final push fer it, We take the majority of our troops stationed there real slow like from Ponyville to Baltimare during the battle. Give'in up ground for an emotional target ain't gonna matter a hill of beans in the grand scheme of things. Give up Ponyville for Baltimare. I reckon its the best way."
"As fer my thoughts on the war, I hate it. I hate it everyday I look down on the outline of Sweet Apple Acres...every time I miss one of Pinkie's parties or Twilights good advice, but I know fightin' fer you is the right thing to do. As the Element of Honesty, I gotta be honest with myself first and foremost"
She thought about it. That was a good idea. "We agree with thy idea, but we need to continue to pressure Ponyville to ensure that we are not attacked into our territory."
Then her eyes softened. "I wish that this war was ended quickly. Not only is it keeping you from your friends, but it is also destroying the lives of many..."
A tear appeared in her eye, but it quickly disappeared. "If you wish to go, you may go. Please send in General Fluttershy if you can find her."
She whispered some words to one of the guards and they left to find Fluttershy which she figured would be right outside.
Lieutenant Vanguard made his way to the war room at his own pace, his black heavy armour weighing down his steps as he trotted onward. It was hard to keep an arrogant stride when each was an attempt not to stumble. By his side he had slung across his sword, a long blade the could be wielded with deadly efficiency, though it has been long since it had seen battle. "My lady, of recent I have received a message from one of my contingents deployed to the south. It may be of some interest to you."
Lance set down the message, resting himself against the centered table. He took off his iron helm and set it down at his side as he addressed the Princess once again. "I would highly urge you to allow me to deploy my own regiment to he position within the next few hours or risk losing the territory all together. My guard are on standby and awaiting your command."
In truth, the only real reason he sought to lead his own guard to battle was that he had none left to end in his place. The war efforts had been stretched to capacity. His own regiment was already split into elite bands, attached to his own contingents to strengthen the front lines. The lieutenant had little choice left; he had to lead his remaining forces to secure the position, lest risk losing the territory altogether.
He did not so much as turn his head as he spoke, merely gesturing towards the mare. He cared not for her at this moment as she was not worth the argument. "Considering most of the stationed guards are under my own command it was not difficult. Though I may keep a civil tongue to the Princess you on the other hoof require no such privilege." Vanguard cradled the hilt of his sword with his free hoof. He need not draw it in the current circumstances, but these war mares were awfully unpredictable when stirred.
Luna glowered at the upstart young stallion. She read over the letter twice, meditating. And then she put it down with a thud. "We do not have the energy for dealing with upstart imbeciles. Although," she said, thoughtful, "it is a good point to have brought to our attention. Leave to support them. And please obtain respect for your commander in chief if you have any wish to maintain your current ranking, lieutenant." She sighed. "Does anyone have anything stronger than an aspirin for a headache?"
For a moment Applejack just stood there in shock. She could not believe the arrogance. "Lt Vanguard, perhaps you don't know who I am. 'GENERAL Applejack in case ya didnt know. If ya make one more gesture towards that there weapon, I will personally clip your wings"
"You should rest, my lady. You have been under much stress of late, and I see others are of no help to this. I shall depart as soon as possible for our position. I bid thee farewell." He bowed his head towards the princess, turning to face Applejack for a brief moment. He gave a cocky smile before placing his iron helm atop his head. "Take care, general." He strode out the door, his steps heavy from his armour. He had much to plan for the next few days, his forces needed to be deployed as soon as possible. He would have an hour to rally his vassals and then they marched. Hopefully he would arrive before nightfall.
Luna sighed and shook her head. "He is arrogant. We will have to watch him." He sighed and wrote orders to Fluttershy, telling her to start staging to Baltimare. He sent it to Fluttershy- it would find her- and then she sighed. "I need rest... I will talk to you tomorrow concerning the exact movements." She bowed to Applejack, and then left. Sh went over to her room and flopped very unroyally onto her bed. Maybe a few hours of sleep would fix her...
((And with that, I take my leave. Goodnight, fair ponies.))
It was a beautiful night, the stars twinkled and shined over Golden Age's head. For a moment, he forgot about the war and cherished the moment of peace.
His day dreaming was cut short by rapid trotting. His men cocket their muskets, expecting an attack. But instead, it was only a courier, of which Golden Age was happy to see. "At ease" he waved to his men.
"Sergeant Golden Age?" The courier asked. "Aye, that'd be me lad" Golden Age responded.
The courier continued "Princess Luna has sent General Vanguard to your assistance sir, he will relieve you of command and you will be put under him."
"Sounds rather fitting. I'm used to looking over 8 men, not 80!" What's this Vanguard like? What's the lads personality?" Golden Age asked. "Don't know sir, never met the pony. I hear he wears black armor sir, can't miss him!" The courier answered. "Black Armor eh? 'Hope he's not one of those over-confident daredevils. I wouldn't prefer to die." Golde Age said with a grin
A short pause followed.
"Well lad, I'll let you get on your way, safe travels" Golden Age spoke. "Thank you kindly sir!" The courier responded with a salute. Golden Age returend the salute, to which the courier then proceeded to gallop off back into the darkness.
Golden Age muttered under his breath "Those Solars best not try a night attack. I had fightin' in the night, ye can't see a bloody thing! All I have to do is wait until tomorrow, this Vanguard should arrive by then.
Golden Age retired to his tent and dozed off for the night.
