I Don't Understand Why Critics Exist

It appears you did not read my second sentence. This is to me more a question of employment, being paid to do it, not the act itself.

Oh, I did. Your wording was ambiguous though. They way I read it, you said that people shouldn't critique things they haven't done themselves, and I disagree with that. You specified opinions in the second sentence, which implies that you meant it separately from critiquing.

Anyway, I don't see a problem with professional critics. They're just reporters, except they write columns about new movies/music/etc instead of news. They just have a little more freedom, because nobody is going to get pissed if they release a controversial and scathing movie review :P

Honestly, I strongly dislike the concept of big, corporate, media critics as most of what I have seen out of them, they're just douchebags that think that they are always right and people should listen to them.

I say that everyone is their own critic

If you like something, then don't let anyone else tell you your wrong for liking it

Really, the only two critics I've ever took any advice from are the Angry Video Game Nerd (James Rolfe) and The Nostalgia Critic (Doug Walker). Both of them have their premiere acts, sure, but then they actually release videos that show them out of character, and actually take the time to go in depth on why they hate the movie/game they are reviewing so much. Also important to note is that THEY KNOW that it is their own opinion, and they actually encourage their viewers to form ideas on their own.

Doug's "Disneycember" marathon, with me being a huge Disney fan, was not at all on par with my own views on each of the Disney Animated Canon, but that doesn't mean he's a bad critic. He's just reviewing them to get his opinions out there. It's freedom of speech, and best of all, he's not an asshole about it.
