Akemi Homura 7,680 December 27, 2012 Share December 27, 2012 I laud you for your courage and willingness to explain to your parents what exactly was it that you like. Interesting thing, because parents are supposed to be more open-minded and unprejudiced in regards to what their children may or may not like. If you can, try to sit down with them and tell them how big of an impact the show has had on people and how stereotypes were eliminated since its incorporation, so no longer do you have hide in the shadows fearing that gender roles will overtake your passions. Makes me feel pretty lucky knowing that my own parents like the show just as much as I do... in fact, my entire English class thinks it's cool. Where you slipped up, I managed to stun people and so can you! You just need to be more assertive.
Moon Rat 4,772 December 27, 2012 Share December 27, 2012 (edited) I have always found being normal to be boring anyway, most of my interests wouldn't raise too many questions about my masculinity but I have those interests including MLP simply because I like them not because society or someone else told me to like them. I will admit though that I never thought in a million years one of my interests would be cartoon ponies but life has an interesting sense of humor sometimes.Indeed, I too never thought I would be into a show called My Little Pony so when it came out I decided to just force myself to watch it thinking I would hate it... I was vastly mistaken there Unfortunately, my dad doesn't seem to think it is all that great... He sees ponies and is immediately not happy about it... Though, I DID show him the Royal Wedding episode and he laghed his ass off when Pinkie Pie used Twilight as a cannon ON TOPIC: I will never be a typical man and my stepmom and dad can shove their distaste up their butthole Edited December 27, 2012 by ~ds8~ 4 Thank you Nas for the sig :3 #HugWoona
DoctorWhovian1902 596 December 27, 2012 Author Share December 27, 2012 Wait, wait, wait.Forgive me if I sound rude or anything, but why can't you ask one of your nicer non-brony friends to buy it for you?The hater friends,I can understand, but I clearly don't see why a friend who simply doesn't like MLP won't not buy the plushie for you if you'll pay them back. They could it do as a belated Christmas present for you even. However,if that simply does not work out,you could try getting the money if you haven't already.Order it through your parents. If they have any qualms, tell them it's your goddamned money, you spend it how you please.Hell, even pull the self-confidence card on them if they have any qualms, saying that by buying this plushie for yourself, you are building self-confidence and independence because you are buying something that you worked for.It was not a Christmas present or anything, but by God,did you work for it.If you're using Christmas money, just stick with the "It's my money,I'll use it as I see fit" thing or say that whoever gave you the money is buying it for you. It's technically true too,so thye can't deny it. If all else fails, you could steal their credit card number and pay them back.Just saying. I appreciate the advice, but I'm not going to be able to get the plushie no matter what. And if I did, can you imagine their reaction? "Oh, our son has bought a plushie behind our backs. Sinner!" Okay, I'm exaggerating (to what I think is a humorous degree), but you get the point. Also, stealing their credit card number?
Doctor-Whooves 288 December 27, 2012 Share December 27, 2012 Ouch... that is a tough dilemma. Have you showed them more of the great things about the fandom, other than music? Some art (not clopper art, though. They probably won't approve.), websites, etc. There are quite a few articles that show that we're all normal. However this turns out, I want you to know on behalf of the fandom that we have your back. 2 Signature by myself Signatures, Avatars, Wallpapers! Obsidian_Winter 1,159 December 27, 2012 Share December 27, 2012 I see stories like this and it always reminds me of the LGBT community. Its like people trying to tell their parents their gay or a lesbian. Its sad really that some adults can be so closed minded. My own Mother doesnt understand but I'm an adult myself and I do as I please, be damned with what anyone likes or doesn't like. Honestly, this problem is a complex one because it deals with the dynamics of the relationship with your parents, but honestly, you need to sit down with them and tell them about the complex community that has surrounded this show. Tell them it involves people of all ages from young and old. We have a vast array of talented videographers, animators, musicians, voice actors, writers, etc. Its not just liking a show but its so much more. Tell them its something you like and though you understand they may not understand it, it is something that makes you happy. Remind them that out of all the things in this world folks your age do, you choose to enjoy a show that teaches morals, friendship, love, respect and so much more. If all of that fails to work, tell them you just don't understand why they want to teach you to judge others for what they watch when what they watch is nothing but good. Its a bad situation, but in the end, you are who you are. You are one of us. You are one of the community. You are one of the folks in the Brony lifestyle and by Luna if you want a damn RD plushie, you should have it. I see stories like this and it always reminds me of the LGBT community. Aurum 18 December 27, 2012 Share December 27, 2012 Parents will always be one generation behind. I sometimes go to Disney stores to look at the pretty toys. After Wreck-It Ralph came out with all its merchandise, I've seen a common theme unfold:-Dad sees these giant "Wreck-It Ralph Hands" (http://www.amazon.com/Disney-Wreck-It-Ralph-Exclusive-Smash/dp/B009U1VSKQ), tells his son that he thinks they're cool. -Son is disinterested, and asks if there's any of Vanellope. (Of course there isn't, kid! I would know! I've been desperate to see figures of her in person!)I swear, I've seen the exact same thing happen like three or four times. It's eerie. It's always those giant hands, too. .___.Maybe buy them a download of the Bronies documentary? Of course, if they think you're the only one who likes it, they might not get the appeal. But if they know that the show is so popular with adults that it's got its own documentary, then it could give them some perspective. Not sure you'll get them to completely change their minds, but it's worth a shot.

thor9356 540 December 27, 2012 Share December 27, 2012 (edited) I truly feel for you man. Hell, i'd even buy you the plushie myself. However, I understand that you don't want to get it behind their backs and I can respect that. Personally, I was in a situation where my parents wouldn't let me get an airsoft gun. However, that didn't stop me and I ended up getting one and another...and another and well I built up an armory of airsoft guns lol. Parents don't mind it now but they weren't happy when they found out. My mom and my brothers constantly criticize me for my love of the show but I always tell them, "I never criticize what you watch or what you do and as my family I would hope you would do the same but i'm sorely disappointed by it and at times can be ashamed that your my family. You shouldn't judge people based on their interests in the first place especially your family but rather respect it or at least attempt to tolerate it.". What i'm trying to say is don't let your parents get you down. Your parents seem to be haters. I mean no offense to them at all. If they keep bringing you down then just get back up and keep doing what your doing. Cause it's the getting back up that counts. It shows that you have heart and that your passionate about what you like and enjoy doing. If I could convert a few more people, which I'm working on, it might work, but then they'd talk to their parents, and I don't know where that'll go from there. GAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!! DoctorWhovian1902 596 December 27, 2012 Author Share December 27, 2012 I would just show my parents a few episodes and ask them what they think. If they still hate the idea, why not try showing a rating on the show, for example how many people your age and gender watch it, compared to little girls. It might help. It won't. They're just stubborn and think all bronies are just online, so there's no way for them to learn more about them. My dad also claims he saw some of the show, which is what confirmed him thinking we're all "weird". What he saw, I have no idea. Even if I did try to show them an episode, they probably would say, "but still, your age group will consider you weird for liking it" (and I would say I simply don't care, but it just wouldn't work.).

jackleapp81 456 December 27, 2012 Share December 27, 2012 Tonight, my sister aimed to humiliate me in front of my parents by insisting that I watch an episode of My Little Pony on our big screen tv. I took the bait, foolishly believing that if they managed to get through one episode of the show, they would immediately set their doubts and reservations aside, and acknowledge its greatness. Needless to say, the opposite occurred. At the first sight of the multi-colored ponies, they began to laugh hysterically. My sister threw her hands up in the air, and imitated the motion of a horse rearing its hooves up in the air. "NEIGHHHH-HE-HE-HE!!!" she bellowed. "I'M LITTLE PON--EEE!! Want a pony ride, little boy??" "Stop it!" I cried out. My protest was futile. My Dad got on the floor and began imitating a bucking horse. "HEE-HAW! HEE-HAW! DO YOU LIKE MEEEE?? I'M A PRETTY PINK PONY! DON'T YOU LIKE THOSE, DEREK??" "Dad, PLEASE!! Just STOP it!" I demanded. "If you just watched the show, you would see that is has great animation, characters, stories,and--" Dad interrupted. "Oh puh-leez! I'm just telling you Derek, you are digging yourself one BI-I-I-I-I-IG hole! Better stop while you're ahead. Wouldn't want that dignity gettin' away from you, huh? Would ya? Huh?" He had a smile on his face as he said this, but there was a silent desperation in his eyes and his forced grin that seemed to suggest that he was holding out one last shred of hope that I would denounce my interest in the show right then and there, and then we could all move on with our predictable pedestrian lives. Well, he could anyway. "Dad...please...I am still the same son that you've always had. I am the same son who helped you fix up my car last year, who went camping with you in Colorado for the last five summers. I am the same son who went with you to the monster truck derby when nobody else wanted to go, the same son who stood up for you and DEFENDED you when you had that drinking problem a few months ago. I have tried and tried to please you for years and years, and now the f*cking thing that's going to finally destroy the f*cking bridge that I've been building between the two of us for ages and ages is a D*MN TV SHOW?!?!? I am DONE with ALL of you!!!" At that point, I lost my temper and kicked down one of the tables in the living room. Some coffee spilled on the carpet and my Dad began yelling something about how expensive the carpet was and how long it was going to take to get the stain out. My mind was spinning out of control, and all I wanted to do was shut myself in my room, cry, and vent my frustrations. So that's what I did. I'd like for this post to help you understand that there are a lot of bronies who are going through the same thing you are. Maybe the fact that you're not alone in your struggles will provide some comfort. It does for me. 9 My OC: http://mlpforums.com/page/roleplay-characters/_/hoofy-harrington-r5911
Appetite4Democracy 452 December 27, 2012 Share December 27, 2012 Your parents seem to be forgetting something very important. You're a brony. Not Satan. IT'S. A. GOD. DAMN. CARTOON. "But it's for girls!" The show was designed for the whole family to be able to watch it without wanting to gouge their eyes out. "But people will treat you differently!" Real friends won't give a fuck. "But people who watch it have no lives!" Really? Talented musicians, authors, and artists who happen to watch a cartoon have no lives? You just want merchandise for a show. It's not something that will change your life or topple the Spanish government. 7 "For those about to rock, we salute you!"- ACϟDCSignature by Gone ϟ Airbourne (click the signature) My Tumblr Member of the Equestrian Gaming Clan
