My OC Cascade

Descant

Recommended Posts

So, I'm no visual artist. However, I thought I'd take a chance and draw my new OC, Cascade. I'm largely unsatisfied with what Zoi's PonyCreator has to offer, and my drawing is closer to what I was looking for than what PonyCreator had to offer, but as usual I'm unhappy with my own artistic abilities.

Anywho... Here's my drawing. Sorry for the quality. Dim lighting and iPhone cameras never really get along.

I really like her...mane?  No seriously.  I love the wavy mane.  Or maybe because I automatically love her because I've always loved the name Cascade, and the brand of dish soap!  Just ignore my rambling.  It's a really nice OC.

Ha. I don't mind rambling. My talents, honestly, generally tend to lie in describing things with words, rather than in pictures. I just thought I'd mix that up for once.

It'd be wavier, and look a little something like the right two examples in this picture here if I were more experienced with a pencil. It was enough for me to make look like this.

This is lovely and seems like a very serene setting and Cascade is a beautiful name! She seems like a wonderful OC! I'd love to see more of her sometime! :3

Thank you! The pony itself looks alright in the drawing; I might just go back and fix the background and scenery so it doesn't detract so much from the drawing itself.

I'd love to work on my drawing skills; I know they're inadequate. I just need to actually draw more often. Practice makes perfect!

Its cute!

But the way the head is connected to the neck (or is it how the neck is connect to the body?) is a bit odd looking.  And I find the snout a bit too rounded.  The ear would look nicer with a line through it.  (look at a picture of a MLP pony)

And I would have made the hair flow more considering she's in the water.

But I love the way you drew the body and the wings.  (the wings are your own style I'm guessing)

I would say that this is perfectly fine for non-professional art, and that you only get better with practice. Way better than anything I've ever done. If I had a really particular suggestion, it would be to draw more lightly on much brighter paper, and go over it in dark ink when you're done. This looks to be all done in pencil, and some of the lines have smudged especially in the tail.

Thanks for the feedback!

About the wings... Yeah, I've always been horrible at drawing feathers. And, conveniently, Cascade was born with defective wings, so I took that as a chance to personalise the wings a bit. They're a bit more water-oriented than normal pegasi. As I said on her page, she can barely fly. A lot of the inspiration for her came from penguins, who use their wings as rudders of sorts, and from water sports such as kayaking and canoeing, as paddles on the surface. The body... I tried to go for a streamlined appearance, and thought about how a water-oriented pegasus might hold herself while underwater.

I entirely forgot about the line in her ear (My mistake), and I might fiddle around with her neck and snout a bit. I'm not opposed to drawing her a few more times...

I have yet to CONCLUSIVELY prove that dreamsofmutilation is just a random troll, but I have some severe suspicions. Either way, ignore the random hate that he/she/it wasn't even dedicated enough to not remove.

Ya think? Just don't feed him.

That was my intention, with the ink, but it didn't really seem to turn out that way... I hold my pencil funny, and I tend to smudge it without even trying. Ah well. I was planning on making another draft anyway; I'll just be a little more careful next time. :P

I have the same problem, whenever I hold a pencil my hand rests all over the page and it's really difficult to avoid previous lines. The clearest results would come from simply drawing directly into the computer with a digitizer, but that's a fairly considerable investment and not guaranteed to really improve much. You could also try going directly to pen instead, mistakes are much harder to correct, but after a short drying period ink actually smudges much less than graphite. If you get a nice scan into the computer you can always edit out mistakes in the software.

Cascade is a good name. I plan to use the same name for a character in the fanfiction I might eventually get around to writing. I hope I needn't add that I decided on that name long before I saw your OC. ;)

Haha, don't worry about it. I'm not one of 'those guys' that will defend a name they came up with tooth and claw. It's just a name, after all, albeit a super-awesome one. Funny coincidences like this happen all the time in the wider world of literature.

I might give her a last name at some point, just to differentiate the two. I'm actually fairly curious what your character's like.

Oddly enough, I was going to ask you to tell us more about your character too. My Cascade is going to be one of twin ponies. She's going to be the more outgoing, brash and daring twin (Kinda like Scootaloo is in the CMC) while her sister is going to be the more sedate, easy-going twin who follows along with the wild plans and tries to keep things from getting out of hand. If you think of Cascade as Ed and the sister as Al from Fullmetal Alchemist, you're not going far wrong. :)

Funny. I have a set of twin OCs named Rag and Tag that are much like that. Tag, the male, is the milder, more easy-going of the two. I love how that works. Again, I'm very amused by these coincidences.

Anyhoo, about my Cascade... She's still in development, but... She was born with a serious wing defection that hindered her flight. Not unlike Scootaloo's stunted wings. I think, rather than stunted wing growth, it was some sort of affliction of the feathers... I'm working on it. The point is, she was never able to fly as a filly, and never grew up loving the sky as other pegasi did. Her parents decided to relocate from Las Pegasus after she nearly fell to her death... Leaving her with an intense fear of heights in the process.

After the move, she discovered her love of the water. Her wings, while fairly useless at helping her fly through the air, allow her to soar through the water, rather like a penguin's does. More recently, as she's grown up, she's gained some restricted abilities of flight, but still chooses not to, as a result of her fear from the fall from the flying city of Las Pegasus, and her preference for the ground and water.

As for personality, she's chatty, bubbly, and fun-loving. She can be surprisingly innocent and naive at times. And she loves to laugh.

That reminds me, what is her Cutie Mark? It just looks like a circle on the picture, though that may be due to the angle and smudginess, but is it perhaps a bubble? It seems very dark for that, but it also fits somewhat.

It's should be a whirlpool. It will be clearer if I had made the picture larger in the first place... Should look something somewhat similar to this. Probably a little more stylized, and in the same navy and turquoise of her mane... Cutie marks are not my forte. Although neither is drawing.

Here.

So, I took another shot at drawing her. I might trace over it in pen this time, and I'm amazed to have minimized smudge so much. I'm aware the head is drawin lighter than the rest of her. Sorry about that.

I tried to put a design in her mane this time, instead of just drawing the individual hairs. The thinner lines are turquoise, while the thicker are a darker blue. As usual, I'd love to hear thoughts about it. Thanks!
