"Thank you Maroon Sky. I'll see what I can do about your wounds once I'm done."

Lost Knowledge gently worked the wood out of Flame's leg and made a tourniquet to keep the leg from bleeding until he had water and was able to clean and bandage the wounds. He tried to take some of the pain away with his magic.

Discharge looked back at the group, almost everypony had suffered some form of injury or another...or worse.

He was immediately filled with hatred for himself, he had let everyone down, and the cost couldn't be higher.

He had medical experience himself, being an adventurer for most of his life he had to learn.

But all the questions and demands for medical items where lost on him. He wasn't taking in anything, and his brain was still trying to process what had just happened so quickly.

He slowly walked over to the campfire and sat down beside it, looking deep into the flames.

"I'm...sorry, everypony" he started, trying - and failing - to keep the sorrow from his voice "I blame only myself for everything that has happened here tonight. I should never have asked you all to come."

@,

Lost Knowledge turned when he heard Discharge's words.

"It's not your fault. There was nothing you can have done to stop this from happening. It was just bad luck."

He thought back to Aqua being crushed.

"Terrible, tragic luck. But we can't let that stop us. We have to keep going, or Aqua's sacrifice will have been for nothing."

@,

Discharge lowered his head when he heard Lost Knowledge reply, and almost caught his mane in the fire. "I know..." he sighed softly.

"It's just...all my life i've been protecting people...and now..." he starting hoofing at the ground in a half hearted manner, before he suddenly stood up, trotted over and started digging properly at some wet soil at the edge of the camp.

@,

Maroon Sky returned from the river with a bucket full of fresh water. He repeatedly thanked both Celestia and Luna that nothing ambushed him when he was away from the group. He dropped the bucket next to Lost Knowledge. "My wounds are superficial, you had it worse than me," He said to Lost Knowledge.

If you levelled the entire forest when the Timberwolves first emerged, all of this wouldn't have happened, his subconsciousness spoke.

Maroon Sky shook his head violently to drive the voice away. It was not the time for any inner monologue.

@,

Maroon Sky sighed, it was not the time for mourn. Aqua's death was upsetting, yes, but it would be an insult to his memory if they gave up. He trotted to Ardent and started helping him digging the grave for Aqua. "Princess Luna herself asked you to retrieve the Amulet of the Eventide, to ensure that it will not fall to the wrong hooves. We are here not because we were forced to, but because we volunteered. We all know what kind of risk we are putting ourselves under. You should never take all he blame all on yourself. Nothing that had happened here was under your control," He said to Ardent. "We must continue on our way and bring the amulet back to the Canterlot, so his death would not be in vain."

Lost Knowledge wasn't going to let it go that easily.

"Well, it's no good moping about it. If you really feel bad about it, you should help treat some of the others. I can only take care of one pony at a time. At least then you'll have something to occupy you besides poking at the dirt like an idiot."

Having received the water, Lost Knowledge began cleaning the wounds, doing his best to keep from causing Flame Dancer any further pain.

"Suit yourself, Maroon. But if you decide you want my help, I'll be glad to provide it. It makes me feel like I'm doing my job and contributing to the group."

Discharges wings flared wide when he heard those words "My best - and only living - friend is lying over there dead! I would rather see the entire of Equestria burn, than leave him out in the open to rot or be eaten by these creatures! We are not moving - ANYWHERE until he is buried!" There was an anger in his voice and a fire in his eyes that was unlike any other previous time. He was now truly a pony with nothing to lose, his family had died long ago, and now the last of his friends had joined them.

"Well if the hard part is over, I might as well finish the job. I'm almost done anyway."

He finished wrapping up Flame Dancer's leg.

"There, you can stop complaining now, I'm done."

"Fine. He was a good pony and he deserves a proper burial. I'd like to help you, if you'll let me. Unless it's something that you want to do by yourself."

Goldseek sat in a daze. What had just happened? He looked around. Everypony was injured or dead. He had... avoided the fight? He was screaming in his head. He could have helped. Everypony could have been fine. This was his fault. Why had he just zoned out? If this happened more, he was sure to die. He walked off to the forest to try calm himself down, a tear falling down his cheek.

"You have wounded to attend to, and everpony else should get some sleep. We'll need to be gone by morning" He snapped. He was still clearly annoyed by Lost Knowledges previous misconceptions, but he knew everypony was right. They had to finish this quest, if not for Equestria, then for Aqua.

Maroon's eyes narrowed when Ardent said that he would rather see the entire Equestria burn. He knew he was just exaggerating, but he couldn't help but to be cautious. "You know that we can go back and give him proper burial before continuing the expedition," he said to Ardent. "I'm sure Princess Luna would understand."

@,

Lost Knowledge just looked at him with an expression of pity and sorrow.

"I'm sorry", he whispered.

Having finished with Flame Dancer's wounds he got up.

"Alright, who else needs me to help treat their wounds? I can't just sit here and do nothing, so if any of you want me to see what I can do, speak up."

Slamming his hooves angrily into the ground, he snapped again "It's the middle of the night, we almost died on the carriage ride, the start of the first night sees one of us dead and one more severely injured, and you want to go back?!" Discharge was known to be prone to moodswings, but he never noticed them himself, or how they may affect others - right now, he was bordering on mild insanity. "And you're both saying now's not the time for grieving? Without this fire we wouldn't be able to see a thing. If you feel like continuing this journey in the dark - GO RIGHT AHEAD!" he looked down, realising at some point during his rant he must've started flying, due to the fact he was about 10 feet in the air. He just landed and buried his head under his forelegs. "Just...let me have this, at least - not for me but for him." he seemed to have calmed right down now, back to his normal self again.

Maroon Sky could only feel pity to the stallion who was breaking down in front of him. There was actually a way to send a signal to Canterlot so that some help would come, but it was too risky and prone to misunderstanding. Maroon Sky pressed his hoof to his forehead, trying to relieve the tension. He shouldn't be awake right now. "All right," He said. "My apologies. It was a terrible idea to go back. At least let me help you on this grave. We can talk more about this later after we have our dinner."

@@Starshine,

Lost Knowledge turned to Maroon Sky.

"Let him dig the grave on his own. It's something he needs to do for himself. To us, Aqua was just a travelling companion we barely knew, to him, he was a best friend. It's not our place to involve ourselves in the burial process unless he asks us."

Flame thanked Lost for bandaging his leg, then he shuffled a little closer to the fire, which got him thinking. "M-Maybe this is a bad idea b-but...We could burn him ? My father always b-believed that burning the body of a pony releases the spirit into the world and part of the pony will be with you forever." He said, quietly, looking into the fire. "I mean...burying him would be...I...never mind." He muttered, wishing he hadn't said anything.

Maroon Sky was reluctant to admit it, but Lost knowledge was right. It was never his right to involve himself in Ardent's personal matter. He muttered a small, "I'm sorry," to Ardent before trotting back to the carriage, and sat down there. He closed his eyes, trying to recuperate his stamina from the disastrous battle.

Goldseek trotted back from the forest. He had to face the rest of the group. Would they be mad? Would they even question him? He didn't want to think about it. He was so ready for battle, then he just... lost focus. It wasn't fair. What had he done to deserve it? When Goldseek arrived, he saw Discharge was not in the best mood. He noticed a pony on the ground and realized what happened. Aqua had died. Great. Another reason for Goldseek to blame himself.

Night Song looked on sympathetically at the mourning Discharge. She set her bow and her remaining arrows down and she trotted over to him. Her eyes filled with tears and her wings drooped down. What could she have done? She was at the carriages as well, attacking from afar. Could she have done something? At that moment, she remembered a song that was usually sung as a lullaby. Quietly, she sang it.

Deep in the meadow

Under the willow

Bed of grass

A soft green pillow

Lay down your head

And close your eyes

And when they open

The sun will rise...

(OOC: In case you don't know, this is Rue's Lullaby from the Hunger Games. Thought it would go nicely here.)

@@MagicalStarRain, @,

Discharge eventually found the strength the get a hold of himself and stand up.

After hearing the song that Night was singing, he smiled a little and looked up into the stars. "Thank you."

He then walked over to Flame Dancer and sat down beside him. "We wouldn't be able to burn him, even if I wanted to. We don't have a hot enough fire, or anything to encase him in. And i'm sure as heck not just throwing him on the camp fire like used trash. Still though, I appreciate the suggestion." He rolled his head back loosely as he looked over to the lake and thought out loud "I dont suppose anyone knows where that river leads do they? We could give him a viking burial, if there's a waterfall at the end. I think he'd like that."

"We have the carriage. We can set it up and make a nice...c-comfy b-bed." His lip quivered slightly as a few tears rolled down his cheeks. *I wish star was here.* He thought, putting his head in his hooves.

"I honestly don't know what to say." He looked back into the fire and wiped the tears from his face.

"Don't worry about it, I don't expect you to say anything, and he wouldn't either."

The genuine sadness he could see in Flames eyes, for a pony he barely knew...that was enough for him to be content.

Discharge stood up and walked away, leaving Flame Dancer to be alone.

He thought about the viking funeral some more. They had plenty of wood, and the carriage was actually pretty solid. Maybe they could use that to float him downriver? He let out an exhausted sigh as he sat down at the side of the gently flowing river. He wasn't concerned about being attacked while he was there alone either. They had already beaten so much, what would one more be?

Quip peeked back outside the sound of singing... and crying... aaaaand yelling... and a bunch'o other things, which honestly made Quip's ears ring, which he had tried to get rid of after that stupid bomb accident.

"I'll just... be in here... again... Wouldn't want to interrupt anything or make anypony mad... heh" he said and returned inside the carriage.

"Pff, viking burial. But I like this carriage... we have shared special feelings with each other...... did those shrapnel get into my brain or something?"
