Should we fear E.T.? Or should E.T. fear us?

Humans are a very war centered race. Despite what we tell ourselves about cutting down on nuclear weapons or peace talks, humans as a race will always be a war centered race until we go extinct.

Now on a cosmic scale, we are very, very small. If there is alien life outside of our solar system, the chances are that they are much more advanced than us. So the logical answer to this question is that we should fear them. They have space ships, lasers, intergalactic communications, dark matter engines, all of these science fiction devices, that we are just barely able to comprehend. If an alien race so chose to come to Earth, what would they come for? Water? There's water everywhere in the Universe. Our Iron core? They could easily go to the moon for that. Breeding? Highly unlikely. Slave labor? Now this would be the most likely to come. When nations began conquering others, they tended to use the conquered people as slaves to work and build for them. What's to say aliens wouldn't do the same to us? The ant hill of the Universe. We are small, and should be scared of what's out there.

However, humans don't like to die. We all know this from our instincts. "Fight or Flight" is the instinct that allows you to determine whether you should fight or run. An animal is also most dangerous when cornered. If aliens were to come to Earth and attack us, humans would basically be in a corner. And what do many world powers have nowadays? Nuclear Warheads. Thousands upon thousands of warheads are in the US. If the human race was put into a situation where we could quit, or die, bringing as many of them with us as we could, I believe the human race would choose the latter. MAD, Mutual Assured Destruction. Humans also have a knack for survival. The Black Plague, Small Pox, Spanish Flu, all of these killed thousands of people. Yet the human race is still moving forward, unhindered. If the latter of the two above choices was chosen, then humans would find a way to live, whether it be to hide deep underground until it's safe to emerge, or fly out into the universe, looking for a place to settle down.

So what are your thoughts? Should we be frightened of an advanced alien race? Or should they be scared of warmongering humans?

Well, if an Alien race like the one you described came to Earth, we'd all probably be fucked. But I like to think that we'd stay, bomb the hell out of them, and if we go down, at least go down with a fight. However, I'd want to give them a chance just to see if they're here for peace.

Government = Freak out

Actual people = Mix between freak out and interested.

Bronys = Love and tolerate everything.

I think it's most likely that ETs will end up being if not afraid, very opposed to us as a race. Truth be told, the government will go berserk and blow the crap out of whatever they can. Considering even on small planet earth we developed many different languages, if a UFO is spotted, the government will ask for a deceleration of intent, probably fearing a terrorist attack first, before ET. Because it is highly possible any advanced ET will probably not know English, communication will be minimal, and we will eliminate it due to fear of a terrorist attack, and from there other ETs will probably consider us a threat and attack, or just leave us alone.

Very unpredictable. If aliens find us, then that would suggest that they would be more technologically advanced than us in at least some ways. Their morality might not resemble ours in any way, so it's difficult to say what would happen. They might try to exploit our planet, they might be disgusted by our behavior like in Space Odyssey, and they might just be interested in making friends :). I wouldn't put it past humanity to try to wipe them out though, whether there is a good reason to or not.

If they wanted to visit they should have by now, We are a relatively new planet as far as the universe goes, if aliens have even 1000 years of progress ahead of us then they know where we are...I mean, we're not exactly hiding.

Perhaps we need to unify as human beings, attain light speed travel or invent a television remote that never gets lost to be welcomed into the interplanetary federation.

Well uh I personally believe the human race was crafted by the Annunaki (which I believe to be an ancient alien race) and they left us here. When they come back I don't think they will be pleased with what we have done to our homeplanet, wipe us out and start over.

Depends on who got the bigger gun

If, instead of the ultra-advanced aliens OP described, what we got is the survivors of a dying race, clinging to that infinitesimal hope that they will find a planet that can support their civilization, good chance we will smash them to bits and scavenge their space-faring technologies rather than giving them a chance to co-exist with us on earth

I say if we can't get to their planet let alone find it, and they can find and get to us, then we should probably fear them. things like the wow signal have hinted at advanced life on other planets, so it is possible sometime that we would be visited by non-earth species, and I think we should react not agressively, but friendly. I also think it would be a bad idea to be too welcoming in case the aliens actually are trying to conquer the earth (although that would be very unlikely.) I think aliens trying to visit us would be scientists. Also, we would have to learn eachother's languages, and we could share our technology, knowlage, and history. I guess aliens visiting earth would most likely be a good thing as long as we don't react badly, because if there's one species of advanced aliens, there's bound to be more, and word would go around between them that earth is bad.

Wow I thought I was done with my ideas a whole paragraph ago...

I think they live amongst us already as hybrids or in disguise. Nuclear weapons? They wouldn't do anything against an invading alien race. If they can get to us way easier then we to them don't you think they would be way more advanced?

Well, chances are, if E.T. invades Earth, I'll kill one with my hunting rifle. And if I kill one with my hunting rifle, I'll steal his laser gun. And chances are, if I steal his laser gun, I'll modify it to shoot laser C4. And if I modify it to shoot laser C4, I'll probably go Juggernaught on all of the E.T.'s. And if I go Juggernaught on the E.T.'s, chances are they'll be fearing my insanity. And when they fear my insanity, they will leave our planet never to come back.

And when they leave and never come back, chances are that I'll take a rocket to their home planet and commit genocide.

Conclusion: You don't need to worry about E.T.'s anymore.

If aliens discovered us in general, than hopefully they're civilized. If they are, some idiot's *cough*overdramaticattention/warhog*cough* is gonna buck up the hopefully existent relationship generated between the two races. If they're hostile, we're gonna die and I'll be happy that our disgusting BS loving race is gone. Kinda.

Except humans have knack for survival. We are a very warlike race so any alien contact is likely to frighten us and cause a mass panic that will end up causing humans to act violent against a potentially peaceful alien race. I think would survive since we are a very militarized society

I think that both us and the Aliens should approach each other not with fear per se, but with caution.  To blindly accept them is foolish, but to just shoot first is just as insane, if not more so.  We don't know what their agenda is, and frankly speaking, we need to play it safe.  Would you let a stranger into your house unless he could establish some sense of trust?

Even if theres a 95% chance that they're coming in peace, that 5% chance of hostility is too high, given that they'd likely have developed weapons more powerful than ours.

The only time we should fear E.T.'s or known as aliens is when they want to invade Earth. The technology that aliens might possess could be from years ago, if their existence is proven otherwise. If they want to make peace, we should but not take it too lightly. The United States has had a run-in with other countries in war basically.

Now on a cosmic scale, we are very, very small. If there is alien life outside of our solar system, the chances are that they are much more advanced than us. This is wrong. You can't say probably without any basis. We could be the most advanced in the universe for all we know. The thing is, what if that ran out? Our Iron core? An animal is also most dangerous when cornered. If aliens were to come to Earth and attack us, humans would basically be in a corner. We would, but we would be in too much of a corner to progress, and they would ultimately destroy us. And what do many world powers have nowadays? Nuclear Warheads. Wouldn't the aliens have more power weapons if they were so advanced, and protection against that? Thousands upon thousands of warheads are in the US. If the human race was put into a situation where we could quit, or die, bringing as many of them with us as we could, I believe the human race would choose the latter. Think of what would happen after those were all fired. That could also hit other human civilizations if the aliens have power to reroute them. If the aliens got here in the first place, they could follow us and destroy us wherever we go.

So what are your thoughts? Should we be frightened of an advanced alien race? Or should they be scared of warmongering humans?

Red is what I am trying to counter. I don't think either should be scared though. Why would we even try to kill them if they don't kill us? If they were hostile too, why wouldn't they come here already to expand their empire of planets or solar systems?

Well, I think what would happen is that we'd maybe let them explain their reasons. If they're  peaceful, we'll let them slide. However, If they become a threat, we'll be on guard, or possibly attack.

Once people get used to them, there's obviously gonna be people who will discriminate against them, and all that. People are gonna start hating on them, and some might attempt to shoot them. So maybe the E.Ts could fear us. I mean, if some people can discriminate a human just because their skin is different, imagine aliens? So I don't think they'd fit in well. :P

But I really think most likely that if aliens were to come they'd be a threat. Maybe they can be friendly, but you never know. It would make sense to be on guard, or prepared to attack them at any time. We'd do whatever we could to defend the world from them. But if they turn out to be peaceful, then we'll just keep a close eye on them.

I see what you are saying, but on a cosmic scale, our sun and Earth are very young. They could be using us for experiments. Like maybe the Black Plague came from them (I know it came from rats, but it's just an example.) We could just be a petri dish for the aliens. Maybe they have a limited populace and are about to go extinct and don't want to risk a war with us. So they just wait for us to kill each other off. Humans don't like change. Think back to Galileo, when he said that the Earth revolved around the sun and not the other way around, he was prosecuted for going against a religious view and changing it. More recently, bronies have changed the way to look at masculinity and what a man is. We have gotten flak for it because it is different from what we are told. Humans do irrational things when we get scared or cornered. Like I said in my OP, we would be cornered when it came to an alien invasion. We might try peace talks for a short while, but some knuckle head in an office would do something stupid and we would be in a full scale war. Since it has never happened, I'm going off hypothesis and theories by Astrologists and scientific minds such as Stephen Hawking. I really hope we won't have to find out what's it like to be under an alien invasion and hopefully we can find them before they find us.

Perhaps they just lack the technology to do so at this point.

I think that it's best to be on guard.  We don't know anything about these aliens or what their morality is. To be aware of their arrival and not be at least somewhat *on guard* is rather dangerous.

Wait what? A whole flame war didn't start? These forums rock! And now that you say that, I understand. But still, the older stars might have never been able to form life or whatever, and only the newer ones did, leaving us the oldest and most advanced.

I agree aliens not attacking may be for the same reason that North Korea doesn't bomb the US, NK doesn't have rockets able to carry the bomb to the US, in the same way aliens might not have the technology to even reach Earth.

hollywood films have prettey much brainwashed the earth to make everyone think that if aliens came, they would destroy us and take over the earth, yeah it might happen, but really? Travel trillions of miles just to blow us up? if they're looking for resources, why cant they just use uninhabbeted planets that are closer to home?!

if aliens ever will come to earth, i wouldnt be scared!

If they lack the technology, then that's just contradicting what the original poster wrote. He/she suggested they would probably have better technology than us.

People should stop separating each other based on culture, ethnicity, race, sexuality, history, nation. Then if we overcome all this, we are ready to meet beings who are far away from all these and have much higher values.

There is no need to fear "aliens" (don't like that name). I am semi-alien, born on Terra, left for Kyuwon to attend Imperial Fleet Academy. Earth's inhabitants are descends of the Janians, they originated from a planet called Jania (makes sense, though) and colonized it several hundred thousand years ago.

So now, I'm hear to prepare the Sol System for first contact with the intergalactic civilization. It has been planned for 2172 A.D., but could be happen much earlier because of an interstellar war going on since a few years. Maybe Earth's people will be going to wipe out themselves, in this case, I would have to leave. Such species don't deserve to be part of the intergalactic civilazation and are too dangerous. Reminds of the Endresians from planet Suiram.

Terran Janian raised amoung Kyuwonese on Kyuwon, often around on the intergalactic capital world Psishannticum. Yes, so it is. Not trolling and only a little bit drunk. ^^

Conquering Earth wouldn't be too hard. To invade the planet, land with about 10-30 million ground soldiers and position less than one dozen combat ships in orbit. But why should the Intergalactic Empire do this? There are ~300 million more inhabited planets out there in this galaxy group.

The Janian Psi Corps see Earth has a medium interstellar power in the Orion Arms, as you call it. Your star nation will compose ~10,000 systems and 25,000 planets. Earth will be renamed to Terra (English being used as world language). World population somewhere around four billion; 76% Janian/5% Natalisa/4% Katrishoni/4% Kyuwonese/11% others. Sol System (capital city: Helenopolis) containing maybe 12 inhabited worlds. This may be the case in 45th century.

Fascinating, isn't it?^^
