I've just started drawing about a month ago. Not just ponies but drawing in general. Before I could only do stick figures, and even they looked bad. I think I've come a long way since then. What do you think? Leave your comments and critiques below. You can find these and the rest of my drawings on my tumblr. arcuswind.tumblr.com And have a hoof stomping day.

I have no idea what to call this first pony. Give her a name.

Ok so I drew more than one. The last one I call Toasty. He was in a house fire and one side of him got burnt, but he still has a happy optimistic look at life.

Edit: Sorry about the crappy quality. Click on images to view larger.

What's her cutie mark? I usually come up with names for my OC's and then draw them. I drew one who I named Silver Dasher before I started drawing him, I just now came up with a good cutie mark.

I have no idea what her cutie mark is. I just put the pencil to the paper and whatever happens, happens. Most of the time I'll use a reference but I didn't for this one.

You have a pretty good understanding of how to draw 3D objects, as the tail of the first picture demonstrates. You also seem to grasp the basic idea behind how their legs work, although I don't know if that's because you're simply mimicking the show or if you're conciously considering their bone structure.

You're off to a decent start. The best advice I can give you is you need to start using guide lines. That will eliminate a lot of your problems, for example, the forehead of the first picture. If you had drawn guide lines and used a circle to define the shape of her head you would have known exactly how to curve her forehead.

I did use guide lines.  They may not have been very good ones though. I'll admit the forehead looks a little off but not to bad. Anything else that you noticed?

Using a circle on for the head will ensure the forehead is correct. This same basic technique can also be used on your Scootaloo to make her head look better.

You seem to have two other, basic problems:

1. Proportions. This is more of a lack of knowledge than a lack of skill. Take a look at this:

VQXLOz2.png

The head is 4mm, the chest is 2mm and the flank is 3mm.

In other words the head and chest have a 2:1 ratio and the chest and flank have a 2:3 ratio.

The distance between the center of the chest and the base of the skull is the diameter of the chest. The distance between the center of the chest and the center of the flank is the diameter of the head.

Of course, this is a side view. You'll need to account for forshortening in a different view.

2. Your line quality is shakey. It's better to make a quick, light stroke and erase later than to try to make the line correctly the first time. This will speed up your drawing time and make your lines look more fluid. If you're not already using them, use mechanical pencils. Their tips are always the same sharpness and it's easy to draw lightly with them.

They look pretty good I'd say overall, however I kinda think atleast the first one has a bit to long of a neck, and the head might be slightly off in shape. Body proportions might be a little bit off to I'm not totally sure.

Considering you've only done a months worth of drawing though your off to doing a great job! Keep it up! With enough practice you do practically everything! Well except flying.. :P.

Thank you. This will help me out a lot. As for the line shaky-ness, I do the light sketch first then draw over it. Using a mechanical pencile may help to get the lines smoother and more consistent.

Yeah I noticed her neck was to long but I'd already gone to far with the drawing I figured I'd just finish it.
