~Scootaloo 440 March 8, 2013 Share March 8, 2013 (edited) I've been wanting to try my hand out at fan art for quite a while, but I am not sure where to get started. I like digital art more (like drawing on the PC and such). I don't know how to get started though. EDIT: I am not sure what to start with... flash? or just start with drawing? so confused... zDashiez 496 March 8, 2013 Share March 8, 2013 Its on what you mean by getting started. Do you mean by program or on what/how to draw. etcA good program to use is Paint tool sai.And on if your not overly experienced I'd suggest using reference pics till you get a feel for tablets. ~Scootaloo 440 March 8, 2013 Author Share March 8, 2013 Well I use a program called "Art Rage" which works well with tablets and such. As for what I actually want to do: I would like to animate eventually, but I dont think I am anywhere near ready for that. By Kyoshi
zDashiez 496 March 8, 2013 Share March 8, 2013 I've never heard of Art rage. And I can't really give you any advice for animating lol. If you have any art done, i'd really like to see some.

Art Rage is given to you for free if you buy one of Wacom's tablets, or at least I did. I've been using Paint Tool SAI for all of my drawings and I use Photoshop for the finishing touches. You should start drawing ponies before getting into any sort of animation. My Signature Shop!-=-=-=-=-Art Collection!-=-=-=-=-A Signature Tutorial! Also known as "Cloud Chaser". My Ponysona, Azura. Zygen 6,066 March 8, 2013 Share March 8, 2013 Well I don't really know what you'd mean by getting started ? I mean you just kinda start drawing. And keep practicing and getting better and doing new stuff and such. You should just use whatever art program you can get that you feel most comfortable with, its alot of preference, but there is a few cases where 1 is better then the other, I'm sure you'll find something you can use well though. You shouldn't try animating before drawing though, animating just adds more complication, if your just starting then you need to learn to draw, then once you get that down if you want to consider animation. Most important really is practice, the more you practice the faster and easier things get, and the better it looks. I'm not a great artist though, so I don't really know anything else to tell you , just basic stuff really. Thanks to Gone Airbourne for the awesome sig! zDashiez 496 March 8, 2013 Share March 8, 2013 You need a tablet to go with it so it stays open. Errr, I just said I had two tablets that were apparently meant to go with the program, considering it came on the same disc as the software for the tablet. Then make sure the drivers are installed correctly, up to date and that the tablet is plugged in. If not, you could always contact them and ask them to help you out. zDashiez 496 March 9, 2013 Share March 9, 2013 (edited) Then make sure the drivers are installed correctly, up to date and that the tablet is plugged in. Yea I did all that already and to be honest I don't really care if it works or not. From what I could see of the program it isn't that great, I just happy with .Sai. ~Scootaloo 440 March 9, 2013 Author Share March 9, 2013 No need to argue guys - ArtRage is actually good (I work with a mouse - so it is nice). I would like to use something like Photoshop however I don't have too much money and I would have to acquire it by other means. By Kyoshi
Drahgoon 152 March 9, 2013 Share March 9, 2013 If you're going for drawing as opposed to vectoring I would recommend Paint Tool SAI. It's a nice program that has stabilizer support for tablets. A free alternative is GIMP, which I used for about two drawings before I found out about SAI. Mouse drawings will usually look less smooth, but it still looks nice if you do some touch-ups. However, a tablet helps a lot with drawing, due to being able to make long smooth strokes easily. My Wacom Bamboo Splash Pen tablet was about 55$ refurbished and it works like a charm. Hope this helps! Proton 565 March 9, 2013 Share March 9, 2013 Your better choice would be a tablet, its much easier to draw on one than on a computer. If you need more help than just that, I recommend Sketchbook, ive been using it a lot and its pretty useful, as it covers the basics of drawing but adds some more advanced features you can use when you think you're ready. ~Scootaloo 440 March 9, 2013 Author Share March 9, 2013 Well I tried good old pencil and paper... I thought it didn't look that bad however the snout and eyes were very troublesome for me. Any feedback is wanted ... By Kyoshi
Proton 565 March 9, 2013 Share March 9, 2013 Hmm, not bad for a newbie. However, its not so good drawing using references. I have one tip for you: Sketching. This saves up a lot of time and effort, while making the results better. Google "How to draw ponies" or something like that. Other than this, check out Equestria Daily, it has a huge tutorial with everything you need to know. "Walk always in shadows, so that you will see your foes before they see you."
