PipsqueakThePirate 51 April 26, 2013 Share April 26, 2013 Ok. . . So I'm not the richest guy in the world, but about a month ago I spent almost one hundred dollars on pony merch, and my best friend (who IS in fact a brony) keeps accusing me of "bad investments" and that "I'll become a lonely manchild if I keep spending my money this way". The fact of the matter is, I hardly EVER spend my money this way, solely because, I hardly EVER have money. As I explained earlier, I'm not the richest guy in the world, and very seldom do I get a lot of spending money. But about a month ago, my grandfather gave me a $100 bill because I had just turned 16 the month before. I was never more grateful to have had so much money all to myself. I spent it all on pony merch that has been on display in my bedroom, beautifully decorating my abode. No one really cared about the whole matter, not even my grandfather, although, it wasn't until I told my friends what I had spent it on that I started getting ridiculed for my purchases. They kept telling me that soon I'll become reckless with my money and start buying things, ill-advised. Now see, this was pony merch that I've wanted for a VERY long time. I have been just waiting for a day to buy the things that I did, and I knew that if I didn't buy them soon, I'd end up spending the money on something else. Now this 'best friend' of mine - let's call him Jake - is a rich white kid. The kind of kid that has money just dished-out to him by his parents without having to bat an eyelash. The kind of kid who spends the same amount of money on food for himself, as an entire family of four. The kind of kid who believes they're 'holier than thou' because they eat "exotic-er" foods than you. The kind of kid who will spend $80+ on games that he'll only play once or twice (and NOT during a steam sale). The kind of person who will offer to pay for you because they know you can't afford to get in, and still try to mooch off of your empty wallet. I have been Jake's friend for a very long time now, and am not understanding why he is so cross about this whole situation. He wants to start a video production company with me as a video editor, so he's been reading about finances and-what-not. However, this kind of knowledge has gone to his head, in that, he is constantly trying to give me (and ONLY me) advice on how to plan for the future financially. I keep telling him that I'm just a kid, and want to enjoy the little time I have left to still be one. It's my money, I'll use it how I want it! I just hope that you guys can at least, remotely sympathize with me. I. . . I just, have this feeling that he might be right. And that I can't handle my money (money that I never Have). 4 My YouTube Channel My Twitter My Visuals Request Page My Tumblr/Donate Page
Sir.Flutter Hooves 2,953 April 26, 2013 Share April 26, 2013 Spend your money the way you want to spend it. If your're enjoying your purchase, it's not a bad investment. I just spend clost to $90 on a plushie, and I have no regrets. Don't care about what your friends say, only care about how you feel. Hope I helped! /) 1 This fantastic signature is made my by awesome friend Rainbow Skywalker!
Kyoshi Frost Wolf 41,518 April 26, 2013 Share April 26, 2013 Um, if that is what you want to do, then whats the problem? There is nothing wrong with it as long as you manage your money accordingly. Besides, quite a bit of pony merch is not cheap so you can take that into account as well. The way I see it, you are spending your money on something that that you enjoy. As long as you are managing everything else right, then I think it is perfectly fine.
Righteous Fury 344 April 26, 2013 Share April 26, 2013 yes, you're a total freak of nature just kidding yeah, do whatever you want - if it's your entertainment budget spend it on what's going to give you the most happiness people buy crazier stuff all the time
Unikitty 1,212 April 26, 2013 Share April 26, 2013 It's your money. If using it to buy pony merchandise is what you want, and what makes you most happy, then buy pony merch. It's a good investment, and is no different to buying a video game you really wanted. I think your biggest problem is this 'best friend' of yours. Not to say he is a problem - but the situations revolving around him seem to be.
Shanks 10,816 April 26, 2013 Share April 26, 2013 (edited) I have spent way way more than that at one time on comic books and video games so I can't really see how spending 100 at once on pony merch is all that bad. The Applejack plushie I just bought was $45 if I remember corrrectly and I am eventually going to get a Derpy and Luna plushie as well and maybe a Twilight one too. Adente 1,000 April 26, 2013 Share April 26, 2013 (edited) There's worse things to be wasting your money on. Just make sure that your merchandise doesn't transform into buyer's remorse, so don't go blowing your money on these sorts of things every time you get it. When I have money, I try to limit my spending of it on frivolous things like pony toys and put as much of it as possible into stocks. The more you invest at an early age, the more payoff when you're older and looking to retire. Studies show people who start seriously saving money at age 16-18 instead of more like 25 are able to retire significantly earlier on average. King Brony 15 April 26, 2013 Share April 26, 2013 Don't worry about it to much. I use to worry about things to much and all it did was make me feel bad. You should learn how to manage money but this is not a big deal.
Rainblow H. Ash 5,091 April 26, 2013 Share April 26, 2013 Dude, you're only sixteen. Your friend needs a nice talking to about telling other people how to manage their money when he can't do it himself. Once again, you're sixteen, I think it's awesome that you bought a bunch of pony stuff that you wanted really badly. If you were thirty and hard up for money and blowing it on random stuff, I wouldn't call you a man child, because that's the lowliest insult of all time and I absolutely abhor it, but I would say that would be bad money management. But once again... You're sixteen, not thirty, not even eighteen, and you're still young. More power to you, my friend. #bringbackmerriwetherwillaims

Thrashy 2,800 April 26, 2013 Share April 26, 2013 (edited) Well, there probably are better ways to spend your money, HOWEVER, I'd be lying through my teeth if I said I rarely blow a good chunk of change on stuff that I don't really need. Like the $30 I spent today on this totally AMAZING Rainbow Dash T-shirt, for example... ...Oh, come on, how could I not? It takes my favorite pony and parodies MEGA MAN with her, for Celestia's sake! Also, Hash is right. You're still young - you spend your money however you damn well please, especially because it's birthday money. Working money, that's one thing, but when someone gifts you money? It's kind of expected that you spend it on stuff that makes you happy, you know. Edited April 26, 2013 by Lowline

Fluttashy 325 April 26, 2013 Share April 26, 2013 I really don't feel like it's any of your friends business! I spend about $40 a month of pony merchandise because ponies make me happy! It's not like you're spending it on drugs or things that could harm you. Your friend needs to get a grip it sounds like.

I saw that earlier and thought, "You know, normally frugal old me would say '$30 for an ordinary T-shirt is a total ripoff.' BUT CLEARLY THIS IS NO ORDINARY T-SHIRT." Gotta say, I was kind of wary of the thought of advertising my bronyhood to the public via merch, but one look at that shirt, and all insecurities...out the friggin' window, I will wear this shirt with PRIDE, man.

They're a swirling vortex of money-eating parasprites that will sap your wallet of life! And... it feels so good! Celtore 2,770 April 26, 2013 Share April 26, 2013 (edited) I'm a saver and rather frugal, but it's perfectly fine to spend money where you want to. Even I decide to spend a little cash every now and again on something personal despite most of it going into my education and long term plans. Your friend does need to calm down though, while investments usually mean exponential growth, you're only 16 and don't understand how the system works. I doubt he does either. MyLittlePonyTales 273 April 26, 2013 Share April 26, 2013 Dude, if it's what you like, your friends have no right to hate. I mean, you aren't spending your rent money or starving yourself. So there should be no problem. If you friend thinks it's a waste of money, that's his problem. Seriously, people have spent 2K on plushies, I don't think your spending habits are that bad. Besides, it's your money, do with it what you want. "Reality is a lovely place, but I wouldn't want to live there."
