Merion 783 May 7, 2013 Share May 7, 2013 (I hope this topic fits in this section... ^^') So! I want to make a Luna plushie and I'm trying to figure out what colour of fabric I should use for her mane. I want it to look show accurate AND unique at the same time. In the show Lunas mane is dark blue with a sort of purple hue, right? Yet I've seen many Luna plushies around and their mane colours varied. I've seen cyan, high blue, purple or even grayish. All of them looked pretty nice in my opinion, but I know how important it is to keep the plushie as show-accurate as possible. Today I found some absolutely fantastic fabric. I'm not good at explaining that kind of things, but it was sky blue with a purple hue on it. Depending on how the light touched its surface, it seemed either more blue-ish or purple-ish. It was also really sparkly. I thought that it was exactly the kind of effect the MLP creators had wanted to express when designing Luna. If ponies existed in real life, their manes would sparkle and change colours like this for sure. I'd love to use this lovely bi-colour fabric on my plushie but I know that it wouldn't make it look 100% like the official vector picture of Luna... So here's my question to you! What do you think of plushies that are not 100% show accurate? To what extent are changes acceptable? Please, share your opinion. And, perhaps, show me some examples of your favourite Luna plushies! ^^ 1 click here! ♥
Jupiter Skylight 19 May 7, 2013 Share May 7, 2013 I would make the plushie as close to show accurate as possible but I would still buy that fabric for another project if you love it so much. I think based on how you described it maybe it could work for Trixie's wizard costume but I would have to see a picture. I don't sew though so take my opinion for what you will. Fhaolan 4,483 May 7, 2013 Share May 7, 2013 Do you have any information for the fabric you found, so I can look it up? Something like fibre mix, brand-name, anything at all written on the tag? I'm kinda curious about the translucent property you described.
Merion 783 May 7, 2013 Author Share May 7, 2013 Thanks for your opinion, Jupiter Skylight! Fhaolan, I'll buy it and take some photos The tag was missing so I have no idea what it was... 1 click here! ♥
Lady Leopardess 393 May 7, 2013 Share May 7, 2013 I think it's good to get the colors as close as possible , but I also think some people tend to be too harsh on judging plushies. What I did (when I made my most recent plush) was I have a color booklet (or you could use paint strips) and then compare it to a picture of the pony, find the closest color and then bring it in when you buy fabric. If you're making the plushie for yourself , you should do what you like best and don't worry about other people.
dekutree64 713 May 7, 2013 Share May 7, 2013 I'll be using navy for the coat and electric blue for the mane from Minky Boutique when I get to making Luna. The coat color should technically be a little more gray, but the options are pretty limited for minky. IMO, as long as it gives the right impression, it doesn't have to be perfect. The shapes are more important. I also love the ones like this where people add a layer of gossamer around the mane, to simulate the glow. Not sure I'll be doing it on mine though, since it's a little scratchy and delicate.
Merion 783 May 12, 2013 Author Share May 12, 2013 (edited) It appears that somebody else has already used the iridescent fabric for her mane! Check out the plushie here: http://epicrainbowcrafts.deviantart.com/art/The-Princess-of-the-night-plushie-princess-Luna-368147339 And the fabric itself here: Heheh, to be perfectly honest, the pony purists make me laugh sometimes... If that kind of fabric is not 100% show accurate, then how come the plushie sold at such a high price? As a plushie maker I find it really difficult to meet their expectations. ^^' Edited May 12, 2013 by Meriones Minor click here! ♥
Octavia's Cellozoid 1,488 May 12, 2013 Share May 12, 2013 In my opinion, if you want to sell it, I would make it as show accurate as possible- it might sell faster and for a higher price. If you want to keep your little Luna, do what you think you'll like better! After all, it will be yours and only yours Finland is my favorite. All the other Hetalia characters can go now.
