An interesting study

I'm also happy and smart. And I think that most depressed, anti social Internet users use it the Internet more because they are depressed and anti social, not the other way around.

I'm more social than I was before I started heavy Internet use. It's probably not a result of Internet use, but at the vey least it shows that Internet use hasn't stopped me from being social.

People who don't watch Fox news are more informed to current events rather than people who do watch it.

Fact.

The same could be said for any news network. They're all biased in some direction. I find the best way to get news is to watch about the same stuff on several channels, then look it up online and read an article or two, and then draw my own conclusion.

I think smart people tend to be more obsessed with obtaining knowledge, and the internet is a great way of going about doing that, so I think there is a bit of confusion between effect and cause.

I know it's tuff but let's all try to stop playing violent videogames, violent TV, violent thinking, and just violence in general.

I guess you read more while on the internet, interact with all kind of people, talk to interesting people, study up more on stuff etc etc,

the internet is an information hub after all.

but regular internet goers are on average more depressed and suicidal, lonely and lack rl social skills,

which can lead to less success in life.

Double-edge sword,

I guess it depends,

would you rather be happy or smart ? ~

without the internet i would have been completely alone in my life.

what do you have to say against that?

My statements are based on facts and averages,

just because you're an outlier does not mean that pattern does not exist?

Is that your answer to everything? Facts and averages?

Ever considered the internet attracts people like that and doesn't make them?

Most of the people I've met online have been social butterflies rather than the socially stinted people to claim are the majority of people on the internet. Most of the depressed people I have met online find support and friendship there, and ultimately gotten better.

Averages and facts can be skewed by whoever did the studies and questionnaires. I prefer to rely on proof and experience.

My post was actually wrong- It's supposed to be "People who watch Fox news are less informed than people who don't watch ANY news at all". But of course the internet is a great place to catch up on things. This just shows that Fox is a terrible news station.

Not to put you on the spot, Shank, but I believe this information - which I find to be considerably flawed! - is more a question of the demographic that the Internet attracts rather than the Internet's effect on people.

It's no question that people lacking in self esteem, apt social agency or even perhaps friends can find themselves allured by the anonymity the Internet provides. On the Internet, nobody knows who you are most times and you can quintessentially build yourself up to be anything you wish to build yourself up to. I think it's safe to say that the Internet is a medium for escapist behaviors rather than an entity that perpetuates depression, loneliness, etc.

A good lot of my friends, as well as myself included in the mix, spend a good amount of time on the Internet - and have been doing so for years now! - but are still entirely socially capable and upbeat as anything. While I'm not suggesting this is the norm, I am expressing that, based on my own experiences, I find little to no evidence of your claim.

So would I rather be happy or smart? Why not be both? Seems entirely feasible from where I'm standing.

keep it real .

Of course there are always exceptions

this was just an average after all . ~

And maybe it's not the internet itself, but it attracts those type of characteristics

either way,

I'm just putting the facts out there and allowing people to discuss them. ~ (:

I'm not sure I agree with that totally. If all you watch is a single news network, you will be more informed than if you didn't get any news at all, it'll just be skewed in one political direction. FOX News is not alone in this; CNN, for example, is just as bias, just in a different political direction.
