"Oh, well buck you! What, are you defending the rioters now? I didn't say a word about you and you still act like I insulted you." Marble attempted to use his one functioning leg to turn away, to amusing effect. "that's what I get for trying to strike up a conversation..." he muttered. Marble glanced over at the white unicorn "And who are you? Were you here the whole time?"

Snowy Fields looked at each of the ponies surrounding him, "Allow me to introduce myself, I am Snowy Fields. I had been walking through the park when I saw the three mares come under attack by a splicer. I was on my way over to try to help when that splicer took off with her." he motions towards the thawing Zidotska, "Luckily, he teleported himself right in front of me and I managed to rescue the poor mare. I had thought it best to return her to her friends. However, it seems I was mistaken. I've been standing here long enough to see that none of you were overly concerned with her safety. Perhaps she'd be better off if I took her someplace else."

Aegis'  expression did not change. "We thought she was gone. If you'd be so kind as to unfreeze her, we'll do introductions proper. And as for you," He turned back to Marble Stripe, "I have no idea what your problem is and I don't want to know. But you have been a sad sorry stick in the mud for the entire night, save for those blessed moments where you were out cold. I'm not going to defend those murderers, but neither will I defend you."

 

Poppy, sensing trouble, tried to calm Aegis down. "It's alright, Aegis."

 

"None of this is alright! We have nearly been killed, Sidon and Peaches are missing, Steel is off playing hero, we almost lost Dot and this city is likely going to hell within the month! Don't try to tell me it's alright!" Aegis said, almost breaking into tears

 

"Aegis?"

 

"I'm fine. I just need a moment. Go see if Dot's alright, please."

True Shot sat in the cover he'd found, and grieved silently for a moment. He'd known Citrus for as long as he could remember. They were both so excited to live here, free from Celestia's rule. All their plans and aspirations were gone now because True Shot convinced Citrus to go on this rebellion. This was his fault, and he knew it, but he didn't care. The only thing his rage filled, depressed mind wanted, was a crossbow bolt through Marble Stripe's head. If only he hadn't run out. Luckily for him, something shiny caught his eye. On the ground, where some of the rebels had been traveling, was a single, abandoned crossbow bolt. True Shot snatched it up and ran back to his perch. The unicorn with a broken horn was awake, and standing still. True Shot took aim, about to magically pull the trigger... but wait... Who's that mare he's talking to? True Shot thought for a moment. "I won't kill him... I'll kill someone he cares about" he decided, unaware of the pony's social situation. "Then again, it'd feel a lot better to kill him..." He decided to let luck decide. He unloaded the bolt, tore one feather off, and reloaded it. 

gasp...

"Oh, I'm a stick in the mud for trying to have-" Marble stopped talking and took a deep breath. He turned to Silver Heart without another word to Aegis. "Miss, is there anything you can do to remove this bolt?" Marble asked in exasperation. "I just want to go home."

"I can't say I'm sorry to see him dead. But... I wonder, Mr. Accord. What will you do if I told you that our leader suspected something like this would happen? You don't know which of us has seen him. How can you interrogate the dead, Mr. Accord?" The second revolutionary grinned, and for him to grin like that was either foolishness or courage. "In fact, this has all gone according to plan. Galt's escape, your coming here. And now your mare is heading to Posey Park with two others as we speak. I wonder what she will find there. And I would think twice about killing any of us, Mr Accord, if you value Zidotya's life!"

Steel hesitated. Zidotya was many wonderful things, but she was no fighter.

 

He had to find her.

 

He has to protect her!

 

The terrorist's threats fell on deaf ears. In Steel's mind, nothing was so inevitable that he couldn't cut it in half.

 

"Galt didn't tell me to find your leader." Steel said. "Investigation is left to smarter ponies than I. I was specifically told cull your numbers." He took a fighting stance. " . . . . You'll do just fine." Steel

lunged at the speaker.

"Mr Stripe!" Poppy yelled as Marble stripe collapsed. A crossbow bolt had struck his leg. With everything he'd been through, this bolt might just kill him.

 

Aegis raced over as fast as his legs could move. "Don't die on us, Marble Stripe! Silver Heart, can you help him?"

THUD

"AAAAAAAUGH" Marble screamed in pain. It felt like his kneecap had caught on fire. Both his front legs immobilized, he shifted his weight to his back legs. He lost his balance almost immediately and crashed onto his back, which was less painful than if he had collapsed on his injured forelimbs. Marble clenched his teeth, closed his eyes and flailed his back legs in pain.

"That's a pity." The terrorist said, stopping Steel's blade mid stroke and freezing him in place. "Smarter ponies than you? Surely you mean 'more even tempered ponies than you'. But did you attack me because Galt said to, or was it because I threatened Zidotya? It doesn't matter in the end anyway, the result would still be the same."

"Sir, we need to go. Squad A is missing, and the law enforcement teams are on their way."

The terrorist sighed. "Obviously, there's no point looking for Squad B, then. Alas, our time together has come to an end, but you'll remember me, Mr Accord. Not by mask or face, but by my voice. Heed me well..." He removed his mask, "I am Praetorian, a crusader for justice in this lawless city where the strong prey upon the weak and the mighty abuse their power. Now begone! And take my message to Galt!"

Praetorian replaced his mask in a display of admittedly unecessary theatrics before vanishing into a cloud of smoke. The ice holding Steel in place shattered, but the terrorists and this 'Praetorian' were gone.

Steel had made quick work of his attackers.

 

"That should be enough to satisfy Galt's demand. I'm sure Dot's all right at the apartment, but I have to see to the others at Posey Park."

 

Steel made his way to the park where a heated debate seemed to be taking place. He smiled. "Well nice to see our City's culture can withstand such a-" The Swordpony visibly paled. "DOT!" He ran to his beloved and held her thawing form. "It's okay. I'm here! Oh you stupidly selfless mare, I told you to go home!" He did his best to warm her.

Praetorian watched Steel fight in the alley below. His little trick had worked better than expected. Who would ever think that the 'Praetorian' being slaughtered was actually just a random pony plucked from the street and brainwashed with a spell. Coupled with the mask, a simple toy radio and some illusory copies, Praetorian had fooled the greatest swordspony in Harmony so easily. But, with this act, he sent an indirect message to Galt, as if to say 'What can you do to stop me?' Praetorian viewed himself a hero, a crusader for right. Words with an ironic ring...

"Sir. I do not agree with this use of ponies' lives."

Praetorian removed his mask, dark locks falling in front of his face. "Oh? Didn't I tell you when you joined me that sacrifices would be made? That sometimes for us to succeed, ponies would have to die? This is one such time, Spell Check. But worry not. We will avenge them soon enough. For now, call off the search for Galt and Steel's lover."

"Why, sir?" Spell Check asked.

"Because she is no longer of concern. Galt has vanished, much like I once did to him, and as we can see, Steel would sacrifice anyone to fulfill his orders. It is uncomfortably familiar..."

Spell Check frowned. "I would never imagine why..." He didn't always understand this pony, this 'Praetorian', but he offered to bring equality to a city that had split itself right down the middle. You were either rich and lived well with everything was merely a hoofstep away, or you suffered in the slums, scrtaching out a living with the world bearing down on you and bleeding you dry. It seemed like a mistake to ever leave Equestria.

(OOC: In my completely non-professional opinion, I'm sure that being completely frozen would be beyond deadly but let's pretend it isn't because "Magic". Also I'm typing this from my phone and therefore thoughts will be in parentheses instead of italics.)

Snowy looked impassively at Aegis as he spoke. "If we try to speed up the thawing process there's a high chance of causing more damage to any areas that already have frostbite...The best thing that we can do for her is to let her thaw out on her own. So with that in mind let us get the introductions underway. I'll start off again. I am Snowy Fields, I'm just visiting to pay my respects to Mr. Galt. It seems I've chosen the perfect time to visit."

 

Before anyone could answer, Marble Stripe screamed and collapsed to the ground. Snowy looked in the direction that the bolt had come from. (I thought I had killed all the nearby splicers. If there are more of them around then this could be troublesome.)

 

(OOC: Sorry I don't have the time to narrate this part just pretend: Steel Accord enters the scene.)

"Sir, I don't know who you are but I assure you the zebra will be fine. We need to get moving."

 

"I think it would be best if we retreat for now. There are probably more splicers. I'll carry the stallion. One of you can handle the Zebra. Follow me." Snowy said this as he levitated Marble Stripe into the air and carried him in the direction of the alley he had been in minutes earlier.

Silver Heart couldn't help but stare at the new unicorn. Eventually deciding that he was most likely a noble of Canterlot. Before she got a chance to introduce herself Marble Stripe screamed in pain...again. This time a bolt had found itself in his knee. Silver Heart cringed while she looked at it.

 

(OOC: In response to Aegis' question.)

 

"I...(oh Celestia this is bad).... No there really isn't. If we can get him to the hospital there are some machines that might be able to at least let him walk around but until then there's really nothing I can do other than help ease the pain."

 

Silver Heart used the rest of her magic on a spell to numb Marble Stripes body.

"Steel Accord, and thank you for seeing to her good sir." Steel lifted his marefriend on to his back, she gripped him lightly, barely conscious. "I'll carry her. If even here isn't safe, where could we go?" Steel would offer to lead them to Galt's safe area but part of what made it safe was that no one but the Gryphon knew where it was.

"A hospital." Aegis said. He didn't know what came over him, but somehow he felt responsible for this group of ponies, and he wanted to get them to safety as soon as possible. "There should be a hospital not far from here. We make our way there, and once we're safe and tending to our wounds, we can plan our next move. Things are only going to get worse, I'm afraid."

 

He turned and began walking in a seemingly random direction.

Dot shifted weakly on his back and Steel turned to kiss her reassuringly.

 

"Things may only get worse, but nopony is going to come to further harm as long as I can still stand." Steel said as he took up the tail end, covering the group's rear.

 

Little did they know, a wild card in this shuffling deck of politics and priorities was headed their way, revenge the only thing on his mind.

"I feel safer already." Aegis said. He slowed his pace to match Snowy, intending to find out more about this mysterious unicorn. "By the way, my name's Aegis Dare. Sorry we couldn't meet under better circumstances."

 

Poppy walked next to Silver Heart, within earshot of both Aegis and Steel. "Who would stir up this intense hatred? They probably hate themselves more than anything..."

"Well at least somepony is going to be polite. Anyway, since no one else seems intent on trod icing themselves, why don't you tell me a bit about yourself and your companions." Snowy Fields said to Aegis.

 

Silver Heart looked at Poppy for a moment, uncertain of how to respond to that. "I'm not sure who could do this, apparently other ponies seem to want this too. What do you think will happen?"

"I am merely a journalist for the Harmony Confidential and a part-time author. My companions are Steel Accord the Master Swordspony, his lover Dot, Silver Heart the nurse, Marble Stripe, to whom I have been less than pleasant, and my fiance Poppy Seed." Aegis said, gesturing to each pony. "We were celebrating the Summer's Sun when the terrorists attacked. They were yelling about Galt, but when I had the chance to question one of them, I lost my temper and killed him instead. I must also apologise for my earlier lack of manners."

 

"I don't know, Silver. But I do know that we should stick together until things calm down. Galt wouldn't let a war break out in the city." Poppy glanced at Steel. "Would he?"

(OOC: windbreaker told me that we went with Harmony as the name for the city. So I'm going with that.)

 

"Thank you. This is a very eclectic group of individuals. In any case, I would suggest leaving this city if you can, I don't think it will recover from this. Since you brought up Galt, does any pony know where he is? I came to this city on business. It is very important that I get to meet him...especially before the terrorists do."

 

Silver Heart thought for a few moments before speaking. "I'm not sure. I really don't know anything about him."

 

"So what brought you and Aegis to Harmony?" Silver Heart asked hoping to take Poppy's mind off of the nights events.

"He vanished in the chaos. Nopony knows where he is right now, and I suspect that is why they wanted Dot. Get Dot, threaten Mr. Accord with her death, then Mr. Accord tells them where Galt is. A simple plan, but luckily it didn't come to that. And we have you to thank, Mr. Fields." Aegis said. His wing had gone numb by now.

 

"Aegis came looking for inspiration for a story he had been working on for years, and I was just working the bar on that boat. I was going to go back to Equestria, when Aegis said I'd dropped my invitation. I don't know how or where he got an extra invitation, but he was always kind." Poppy said, remembering happier times. "He can act like a foal sometimes, though. Especially when it comes to baths."

 

Aegis responded with mock indignance. "I do not. I'm a perfectly mature Pegasus stallion."

"Pity. Well I'll find him eventually. Since this seems like a decent way to pass the time, why did the rest of you come?" Snowy asked.

 

Silver Heart was the first to speak up, "I used my family's social status and connections to get me in. I didn't like how slowly medicine was advancing in Equestria. I had heard from some acquaintances how Galt allowed almost anything so long as it helped advance science...and sadly that wasn't an exaggeration...anything seems to be allowed."

At the question more seriously directed at him, Steel's ears flattened. "War has already broken out. Whether Galt would allow it or not is no longer relavent."

"Pity. Well I'll find him eventually. Since this seems like a decent way to pass the time, why did the rest of you come?" Snowy asked.

"And what's wrong with that?" Steel said. "We all have our special talents, the things we do best at, if one is immoral, you don't do business with him. "Hey!" Steel protested from behind. "I can still hear you back here, and I'm starting to regret that interview if you're gonna spout it out to all of Harmony on how intimate I am with my marefriend!"

As I recall, the closest equivalent to such questions was when Poppy asked how you met. Furthermore, that interview is no longer relevant, since in two weeks, maybe a month, this city will be a battleground."

Aegis spied a nearby alleyway. If his reasoning was correct, there would be a hospital somewhere on the other side of the buildings. The alleyway would provide a useful shortcut. "Through here, everypony. This alleyway is a shortcut to the hospital."

 

"Is it safe, Aegis? Then again, I don't suppose anything is safe anymore." Poppy said.

 

Aegis answered her anyway. "Only one way to find out. I'll go first, then everypony form a line behind me." He took a tentetive step forwards into the cramped space, but nothing leapt out at him. Not convinced, he took another step. This time his hoof brushed against something cold and hard. Upon looking down, he discovered that it was a chunk of ice shaped like a unicorn's horn. "That's strange... What happened here?"

Snowy looked at the remains of the splicers and then to Zidotska. "Ah yes, this is where the splicers had taken the zebra. They weren't willing to listen to reason nor would they just release her to my custody. So I was forced to get rather...physical with them. It's not as though society lost much. They were trash."

Poppy stared at the broken unicorn horn, terror clear in her eyes. Without thinking, she moved closer to Silver Heart, trying to suppress an urge to scream. It came out as a dull, high-pitched whine instead.

 

"Poppy?" Aegis asked, turning around to check on her. "What's wrong?"

 

"I'm scared, Aegis. Scared, tired and worried about you, Silver and Mr Stripe. I want to go home." Poppy said. She was almost on the verge of tears.

 

"We will. Because we're leaving this city." Aegis said.

Steel brought Dot in and payed her down on the table. She ha thawed but she was still shivering. Steel threw a heavy blanket over her and kissed her quivering lips; trying to breathe warmth into her body.

 

"S-S-Steel . . . " She shuddered weakly.

 

"No! Don't speak my love. Conserve your body heat." He looked to his friends. "Does anypony here know how to treat hypothermia?"
