Swordpoint nodded and extended his wings. "Yes, of course. It may take a moment, however. I must gather energy for the spell to avoid overexerting myself as I did in Appleloosa."

Rainbow sighed. "I still can't even cast anything. I don't get it, though; I've been practicing a lot, but I still can't even use basic telekinesis."

"It is difficult for a pegasus to feel the magical energies of the world around us. That is why most of the royal guardians used their own energy to fuel their magic. It is effective, but it can result in death if too much energy is exerted." He extended his wings and concentrated. He began to glow with a golden aura as energy could be seen visibly gathering around him.

"But I don't understand..." Rainbow said. "How can I feel the energy?"

"Through practice. I cast my first spell after a full year of intensive training, and it was a simple telekinesis spell that I could not even sustain for more than a few seconds." He opened his eyes and they glowed a brilliant gold. "There. I have collected the energy I require." He flapped his wings and released the spell, causing wings to sprout from Sanura's back again. They matched her coat, and appeared almost natural. "Because I had the necessary time to prepare, these wings should last slightly longer than last time. But we should still depart at once." He faced Rainbow. "I will return. Goodbye, Rainbow." He spread his wings and lifted off the ground, traveling toward the Everfree Forest.

@@Justin ZW,

Sanura spread her wings and followed Swordpoint. She once again gave herself up to the joy of flight, tho she kept a sharp lookout to see if there was any trouble around. Sanura hoped that Zecora might have some good advice for them; and it was imperitive that a solution be found soon, if one existed. Open war with Cadance was not a pleasant thought.

Harmonic pulled his head back, standing tall from somewhat shock and also out of thought. "And what if family is dead Arrow? What then? What is there to fight for?" His eyes narrowed and he stared almost directly through Arrow. "One would be a fool to hinder his own guard, wouldn't you say? Enid, come. You have performed the task I asked of you and you may return to your sister's side once more."

(OOC: Hmm, can't make Arrow too heroic now, can I?).

Arrow frowned slightly at Harmonic's question; not because it made him pity the younger stallion, but because it brought to the forefront of Arrow's mind a particularly distressing thought, one which up to that moment he had been doing a good job suppressing: technically, Arrow's own family was dead now. He had tried to think of his wife and foal as simply being far away, but deep down he had known that the reality was far worse, and now a dam had been opened.  Even if Arrow's foal was alive, he would be an old pony by now - one who had grown up without knowing his father.

Arrow had to get home. Now more than ever. He would never leave his family again: no more adventures; no more running; he would spend every waking moment with his wife and foal, and leave the daring crusades to somepony else.

Of course, even as he was glaring at Harmonic, Arrow had to accept that staying on Cadence's - and by extension her commander's - good side was his best chance to return back to his own time. So Arrow bit back any retorts, hating himself all the while, and stood down from Harmonic, taking a step back but still staying close to Enid.

I'm sorry, he wanted to tell her. But my family has to come first. Besides, what could I have done? I might've saved you from Harmonic now, but he would have only gone after you later - or most likely both of us.

It was probably for the best, Arrow reasoned. After all, Harmonic did seem willing to let Enid go to her sister, and that was who the mare needed the most.

(OOC: Heh, I'd actually forgotten that you'd replied. Oops. XD).

"Here, Enid." Arrow held out a hoof to help the mare to her hooves, making a conscious effort not to look at Harmonic or pay the commander any heed. He'd had a moment of doubt - a brief, awful moment when he would have given Enid up if Harmonic asked, if only to salvage his own meager standing in the commander's eyes - but he refused to let it show. Instead, he walked steadily away from Harmonic, but staying so close to Enid that he was practically flanking her.

It was not until they had rounded the corner out of Harmonic's sight that Arrow let out the breath he had been holding. He turned a slight smile to Enid, though it did not quite meet his eyes. "Let's go check up on your sister."

Enid gave him a slight, grateful smile of her own, even as tears threatened to start spilling from her eyes once again. Arrow's gut twisted. How could he have ever considered betraying her trust, however briefly?

Getting back has to be my main priority - my family comes first. Second to that is helping the Empire and her ponies. Arrow told himself, even as he swore that he would make it up to Enid, even if she had no idea of his treacherous thoughts.

"I won't let Harmonic bother you again." Arrow told her. "He's just a cocky, posturing knave under all that armour and status."

Arrow's smile was more genuine this time, but Enid frowned slightly. She took a step away from him - Arrow had not even realised how close together they had still been standing - and began to trot ahead, though she did stop to check that Arrow was following.

This time I really did injure her pride. Arrow thought with a slight frown as he followed the mare. Or maybe I went too far insulting Harmonic - he is still her commander, after all. Soldiers' loyalties often runs deep.

Thinking of the commander only worsened Arrow's hangover. I hope Princess Cadence knows what she's doing, employing such a pony. But then, he did let Enid and I go...

Arrow had been so caught up in his thoughts that he almost bumped into Enid from behind, stopping just in time - they had arrived outside the castle. The two headed inside to the sick bay, and Arrow stood back as Enid immediately dashed through to a back room where they were presumably keeping Myra.

(OOC: I tried to avoid controlling her too much, just in case I got her character wrong - I know she's only an NPC, but hey - though I *hope* this was okay).

@@Agent505,

(My, my, Cadence is certainly harder to catch ahold of than a greased viper.)

Crystal Empire: Steeleye Sungazer

Steeleye was busy yet again with the business of making sure that the proverbial duct tape that held Cadence's armies together didn't tear or get soggy. One had to remain in the background when doing such things, as you were likely to get caught up in an unstoppable tide of red tape if you made yourself known. Troop dispositions had to be secretly altered to acquire maximum efficiency. Payroll needed to be guarded more carefully than a aristocratic filly's innocence. Delinquents and malcolents were in plentiful supply and keeping them reigned in was an ardous and unforgiving task. Thus Steeleye had to constantly update plans and grease the cogs that kept his plans in motion, quite literally on one particular scheme.

Having stolen a couple of train engines in his mad scramble across Equestria, he had a basic understanding of how they worked the classroom of trial and error. His own mechanical knowledge was somewhat limited otherwise, but he was slowly learning. As well, the final train he had hi-jacked had been meticulously and silently wheeled into the Crystal Empire, each of its component pieces stripped down and loaded on a number of different carts. Recruiting the help of a pair of knowledgable engineers, he watched from behind a wooden railing as the two rebuilt his vehicle inside of a warehouse nearby Cadence's castle, mounting it on a set of preset tracks. Train engines were large, complicated, contraptions. If  a piece was too loose, or too tight, it might break and cause catastrophy. A huge heap of soiled cleaning rags began to pile up nearby as each part was checked over and cleaned before being slotted in place.

Despite that the process was intruiging and important too him, he had other things to tend to. A practice rail line had to be erected in a clearing so that he, or those whom he deemed suitable, could learn all of the engine's tricks and quirks. This was because Steeleye was once again taking a long shot, albeit a very carefully considered one. The rail lines were the arteries of Equestria. One could get around by walking or cart, but the quickest and most efficient way to travel was by train. Having scrapped a good number of track and engines, he now had possesion of one of the few that remained. Troop transport, mobile weapon platform, prisoner of war shuttling, so much could be done with it. In particular, he was hoping to attach armor so that it was damage resistant. There would be a little trouble with using more fuel and going slower as far as armor went, but the engineers were confident they could work it out. Steeleye, for one reason or another, relished the thought of the train chugging into Canterlot and unleashing hell upon the city he disliked so much.

After further inspections, he returned to his quarters at the Castle. It was getting on in the night by the looks of it and most of his scouts were bedded down already. Just for a moment, he used his magic to cast a scrying spell directed towards Cadence. It was a little risky, as most unicorns powerful enough to cast such a spell could also easily detect its use upon them. Steeleye had no doubt Cadence probably used such spells rather often. Thankfully, he had wards thicker than the castle's outer walls, each layer tied into the one before it with his strong will. Warding magic was tricky, but it was worth it if you could prevent a spell's use upon you. To be careful, he altered the magic so that it was merely the voice of the one he scryed, rather than the actual image of Cadence herself in his water bowl. It was a much weaker and subtler form, one that most unicorns wouldn't even notice. Of course, that made keeping control of it just that much harder, like grabbing mist. The more magic put into a spell, the easier it was to control what direction it went, at least for him.

'-something in his past, he gets touchy at times, but he's a good commander. And besides, his temper keeps the others in line more often than not.' A faint chuckle emanated from the bowl. 'I don't think getting Cicada involed is a good idea. I wouldn't want him to get the wrong idea-...' Steeleye wasn't full of himself by far, but it was fairly easy to tell it wasn't him being discussed. The most obvious point being that he was far beneath Cadence's usual notice as far as being a commander went as far as he was aware. He considered that to be a mistake on her part, but then again he was not often seen and hardly ever heard by her for a good reason. Letting the magic dispel, he entered into his personal chambers and unhooked Darting Route from his lead and most of his restraints, except the wings. Most of it he could get away with if somepony saw, but the wings were mandatory in order to keep up the charade of being insane and captured. Settling in for the night, Steeleye casually wondered if he should put a magical bug light/zapper in his room, so that one of the Changelings would be killed off should they sneak into his abode.

As soon as Lieutenant Steeleye was fast asleep, Darting Route began to prepare himself. It was a painstaking process to relocate his wing joints by himself, let alone do it quietly. But after a few minutes he managed to do so, muffling his groans in the thick matress. Having done so, he stretched his wings while he switched his Crystal Empire armor for something more stealthy. In short, it was a form fitting body suit made of very dark grey silk with plates of super hard bone woven into the mesh over the vulnerable areas. It was great for making his form less distinct at night, in addition to providing protection should he get caught. With extreme care, he slid out of the room through a window and made his way to the top of the nearest tower which had a good view of the front gate. There was stashed one of his prized possessions.

Long and excellently forged segments of steel came out from his hiding place, a buttress with a false stone covering. Each was slotted together until it formed bendable strip four feet in length. Next came the masterfully wooden grip, specially molded for his posture and hooves. A myriad of small pieces were clicked together with extreme care and pushed into their proper niche before the strip was bound to the grip. Finally, a softly glowing red crystal was wrapped in highly flammable cloth along with the neccesary priming components, and bound to a short length of iron that had guiding treads at the end. With a few other minor adjustments, it was ready.

In his journies, Steeleye and his scouts had come upon a clutch of highly unstable magical crystal formations. Short tests showed that when a crystal of one type was pressed against another of a different type, spectacular things would occur. Some made water. Another caused noxious fumes. But the most intriuging effect was controlled explosions. Two of the most volatile crystal types gave off tremendous concussive force and fire, the red crystal in particular gave of a good sized bang and shards of razor shrapnel when it was thrown at the desired target.

The device Darting Route now held, was the result of that particular experiment and the others that followed. With specially tempered steel strips bent back by a strong bowstring, the red rystal could be launched with fairly high accuracy when the catch holding the string was released In effect, Darting Route now had a crossbow nestled against his cheek as he waited for Chrysalis to come out. It had been an extremely pleasing surprise when the bug had shown up at the Castle, and Darting Route thought it to be one of the few chances he would ever have to kill her. He desired to do so not for revenge, just simple prejudice. Deep in his heart he hated everything that was not a pony and wanted to exterminate them all. Changelings were hated in particular because he considered them to be a cruel mockery of the perfect form of a pony. Now their queen seemed to have been served up on a silver platter, at least in his eyes.

His prejudice over-rode his loyalty to everyone else, even Steeleye. Steeleye would have punished him severely, if not out right killing him, for considering such an action. It could critically endanger their chances of success against Celestia. But Darting Route still was laid prone on the top of a dark tower, carefully adjusting his aim and waiting for the exact moment Chrysalis came in sight.

@@Agent505,@Pripyat Pony,

The Doctor within Myra's room turned his attention from the machine's readings to Enid, who the guard had stepped over to at her sudden entrance. Upon recognizing the pony, he stepped back, and let her be.

When the meeting between Cadence and Chrysalis ended, Sanguine and his followers left their hiding places, filing into the room and exiting silently. The short stallion trotted up to the Queen's side, "If your soldiers following her bothers you so much Harmonic, my followers and I can always take their place."
