How do the ponie's parents name them?

I'm not quite sure. Perhaps the parent's wait a bit after the foal is born before naming them. But this is probably false as Mr. and Mrs. Cake named their foals as soon as they were born. Perhaps they name them after a common skill in that pony's family tree. Or maybe Celestia tells the parent's what they should name their foal as she may know the future talents of the foal. The parents can then decide to use the name given to them by Celestia or come up with something themselves.

 

I don't think Celestia would interfere with a parent naming their own children. It just seems kinda wrong and Celesita would be doing that a bunch.

 

As for me I don't think parents know what their kids are going to be. They might pick a name based on what they look like or maybe they do something after they are born. Pinkie Pie is a great example. Rainbow Dash could have been running around after she was born.

 

Maybe names are given to certain ponies when they get a certain job. Maybe Mayor Marie was given the Mayor name when she become Mayor of Ponyville. 

 

It could also be Vinyl Scratch is just a stage name.

She must've gotten her name because she seemed to like electronic music when she was a filly.

Pound Cake is a good example of the name confusion thing.  The babies had their names while they were still in the hospital.  And he was shown to enjoy pounding things.  So, was he doing that in the hospital before they named him?  Or does the name influence the behavior?  Or is it part of the whole destiny thing with the cutie marks?  Or is it a huge coincidence?

It's too confusing to know how the ponies get their names. This will probably just turn into a huge mystery. My brain hurts from thinking about this.

O, I thought DJ PON-3 was just a name the fans gave her, because they did not know her real name, when she first came in. Then Vinyl Scratch was the official name later on.

Simple. The parents look around the room and find seemingly random objects that relate to their heritage and/or preferences, and name their foals after that.

Hang on, let me think up a conspiracy theory...

 

Perhaps Equestria has an economically collectivist system in which ponies are named after whatever jobs need to be filled.

 

A.K.A Soviet Equestria.
