Nightshade promptly got a daisy sandwich.  "I saw a few," Nightshade shrugged.  "I usually don't pay much attention to the other ponies around.  I did hear that it was a pretty good sized group starting this year though.  The lobby sure was full.  I did notice the multitude of Pegasi as well.  Along with the Zebra.  Those always tend to stand out.  I'm trying to recall if I say any other Unicorns.  I know I saw at least one.  Maybe."

@@GaleFenrir,

"Great." Ciel stated, as she finished sorting her cloaks and moved onto placing and organizing her desk objects. "Let me guess, one of your favorites are gardenias?" she asked wryly. "And just don't put any of my side, I don't hate them, but I've never really liked them either." She had tried flower arranging when she was searching for her cutie mark and the whole ordeal had gone sour and left her a bit traumatized. Of course what pony wouldn't be after being stung seven times by multiple bees?

She rummaged through her luggage until she found a spell book filled with minor spells that she had learned over the years. One of them was a spell that allowed the caster to change an objects color. Her horn lit up, slowly and bit by bit the wall changed from a dull white to a lovely shade of light pink. Ciel smiled a bit, proud of her handiwork and turned back to her desk.

"Hey, do you know what we're supposed to do with these forms, by the way?" she asked over her shoulder.

"I didn't see any. Well, except you. I guess I wasnt paying much attention myself though."

The mare paused for a moment to wolf down half of the sandwich.

"It's funny though. I'd have thought there would be a lot more Unicorns. Guess I was wrong."

She ambled back along the path idly, content with the food.

"So I guess we ought to try and find a few of them? I mean if we're going to be taking classes together and stuff." She suggested.

Nightshade ate her sandwich slowly, never one to rush.  "We should at least meet a few of the tonight," she nodded.  "I'm sure they've socialized with each other a bit as well.  Just give them time.  They'll be out here eventually.  Some might have had more unpacking to do than us."

Gardenia wasn't shocked by Ciel being able to change the color of the walls magically; in fact, she was just a little bit stuck between relief that she wouldn't have to paint them and disappointed that she wouldn't have to paint them. "I was just told to bring them with us to our assigned dorms, my guess is that somepony will come and collect them."

Gardenia went to her bag and pulled out a few flowers, namely a few gardenias, but also a tulip and a pansy, just for variety's sake. She placed them on the window sill that was on 'her' side. "You did a lovely job with the walls, Ciel. I have honestly always been a bit jealous of Unicorn magic." Gardenia's typical smile faded a bit at that admission, but she tried to distract herself from that by asking, "Is that why you enrolled here? I hear the magic courses are really quite something."

Ciel nodded, and chuckled quietly. "Oh, don't be, being a unicorn is not all that. When I was a filly I had the worst time learning to harness my magic properly. I think I broke at least ten vases, when learning how to levitate stuff. I used to complain and get mad of my father for not having strong earth pony genes." she said, smiling a bit. But Gardenia's second question, erased the smile from her face completely.

"Uh no, I actually came here, because I wanted to find...my special talent." She said trailing off at the end of her sentence. She didn't know how Gardenia would react, although she must not have cared about her blank flank since she hadn't said anything yet.

Cinder couldn't help but snort to herself a little: to her 'unpacking' had consisted of emptying one bag - and she hadn't even finished that properly. Of course the others would take longer than her. Most if them probably brought more than half of the source material to read.

"Point taken. I guess this is as good as place as any to pony-watch then."

The courtyard was fairly busy, yet not crowded. Students travelled each and every way - their purposeful movement or casual manner giving them away instantly as existing pupils: not newcomers.

Sitting down beside one of the walls, Cinder took a look around and slouched back against it.

"I guess we just kill time then. Unless you needed to do anything?"

"Oh?" Gardenia couldn't help but be in surprise. She hadn't looked at where Ciel's cutie mark would have been; she always felt a little nervous about letting her eyes wander in that general direction, and typically looked at ponies directly. Gardenia cleared her throat, a little embarrassed by the fact that she must have hit a sore spot of Ciel's, but she smiled, a little sheepish, but genuine.

"I am sure you'll find it. I knew plenty of ponies back home who didn't get their marks until adulthood."

Granted, those were all royal guards who wouldn't have been able to find their talent prior to their training for such.

"Nope," Nightshade said, sitting down next to her, still eating her sandwich.  "They seem so laid back," she said, referring to the older students.  "I hope we're able to be that comfortable someday."  She dug at the grass with her hoof absentmindedly.  She smiled, closing her eyes against the faint wind.

@@GaleFenrir,

"Really?" Ciel asked in surprise. She had never heard of any other adult ponies who didn't have their cutie marks yet. A spark of hope blossomed in her chest suddenly, at the thought that she wasn't alone. "That's great! Maybe after I'm done here, I can head over there. It'd be nice to be around more blank flanks." she said wistfully. Now in a good mood, she cast Gardenia a kind smile.

"So, what's your talent by the way?" She asked

"Well we've not had any lessons yet, maybe it's just that easy." Cinder replied jokingly, watching a few of the students walk by. "Wonder how its so relaxing out here, even though its so busy?" She said, mostly to herself.

Pulling at the stray thread for a final time: it came free and she allowed it to blow away on the breeze as she closed her own eyes: she was comfortable, full and more than a little tired.

@,

Hey, I got her to smile! She really should do so more often, it looks good on her.

Though Gardenia did feel a little guilty that that smile would probably fade if Ciel knew she was talking about military ponies. She was fairly certain there was other circumstances a pony could reach adulthood without finding their talent, but for the life of her Gardenia couldn't recollect any such instance.

Gardenia's smile was quite wide as she said "oh, nothing special. Just horticulture, you know, gardening. But I do love it, it's just really calming and rewarding."

Nightshade laughed softly.  "I doubt that's it," she said.  "I've heard these are the most brutal classes in all of Equestria.  I doubt that they're "that easy."  At the least we'll have homework everyday.  At most we'll have it in every class four days a week."  She finished her sandwich and relaxed.

She nodded in agreement, a little daunted at the prospect: Cinder wasn't a stranger to hard work but it DID seem like a lot when she considered it: especially since she knew almost nothing about some of her classes.

"So your studying magic I guess? What kind? What do you do?" She asked, full of questions as always. "Don't Unicorns usually specialise in certain spells?"

She shrugged. It was a very noncommittal gesture - one she used a little too often. "I don't know much about it."

Nightshade thought for a minute before answering.  She wanted to get along as well as possible with this pony and explaining how she got her cutie mark wouldn't be the best option.  "I study herbal magic," she said.  She did too.  She used both parts of the Nightshade plant and had a wide selection of oils and dried herbs in her boxes, along with some more plants she had yet to set out.  Herbal magic was just the only good thing she did.

@@GaleFenrir,

Ciel winced when she saw Gardenia's smile. The mare had been somewhat reserved for most of the conversation, and Ciel felt a bit guilty because she attributed most of that to her lame attitude. She knew from experience that people tended to be chattier and happier when the other conversational partner was happier and chattier too. She made a note to stop spreading her pessimism and 'blue-ness' in the future.

"Horticulture, huh? Sounds fun. So you must be really looking forward to the farming classes, hm? Since that is your talent." she said. "Are you planning to open up a shop or something when you graduate?"

Herbal magic... Well that explained the flower. And her name.

"Huh, I don't know much about plants or herbs to be honest. A few maybe, not many though." Cinder responded, oblivious to the pause. It was true: she could name the chemicals and powders in her cases along with their effects and measures... She wouldn't have the first idea where most of them came from though.

She waved towards the courtyard. "Yeah, grass, flowers, a few kinds of berries... That's about all I know."

"Hey, no! It's not silly at all! I mean I have no clue what I'm going to do after graduation." she said quickly "If I don't find my cutie mark here, I really only have three choices. Go back to live with my parents, live with my sister in Equestria or go hide in the Everfree forest for the rest of my life." she laughed.

"And yeah I get what you mean about the classes. I mean, my mom's a unicorn and she makes toys by hoof! I think all ponies should be given the option of going to each class." She had actually hoped that her special talent wouldn't have to do with her race. It's not like she disliked what she was or her magic, but she often found herself envying the ponies who could perform multiple tasks without magic.

Cliff glanced at the pale beige pony who was his roommate and took in the shapeless black hoodie and small smile. The burly pegasus tossed back his made and hoofbumped his roommate, grinning a little. “Hey, I’m Cliff Chaser. Nice to see I’ve got a roommate. Gimmie a sec to unpack,” Cliff said brightly. He twitched his tail a few times before nosing a few more of his team jerseys into the bottom drawer. “You trying out for the Cloud Bashing team?” He asked, noticing the wings half-hidden underneath his roommate’s hoodie.

It would be nice to have a fellow pegasus to go flying with; Cliff hadn’t raced for years, but a casual little jaunt never hurt anypony. After all, Cloud Bashing was far different than racing. Sometimes he missed racing, but whenever he thought of getting back in the game, his father’s face would swim in his mind’s eye and the urge would pass.

Cool stripes?

Zatiko had encountered a lot of different reactions to his appearance over the years; shock, curiosity, and downright hostility, but it was rare that somepony be impressed. Occasionally, a rebellious mare would attempt to flirt with him to one-up her friends, but since Zatiko was uninterested in their petty games, they soon got them message. “I am sorry for being late,” He murmured, hoofbumping politely and then setting a small, twisted potted plant on his dresser. The plant had three vivid purple buds and plenty of rigid white thorns.

“So where ya from?” His roommate wanted to know.

He glanced at Pelate. Was he joking? “Trottingham for the past six years,” Zatiko said finally, very quietly. “And elsewhere before that. Where do you call home?”

It was only polite to further the conversation, but he was suspicious. And cautious. What was wrong with this pony, didn’t he see the stripes? Didn’t that brand him already as a different breed, a different species? No matter how hard Zatiko tried to smooth out his spiky mane, it stayed rough and bristly, and his eyes never got any less slanted as he grew older. Perhaps there was something wrong with this pony’s eyes.

Gardenia laughed, not at the idea Ciel would have to live in shame, of course. No, Gardenia was just happy she was getting Ciel to open up a little more than she feared she would based on first impressions. "As I said, I'm sure you'll find your talent." Gardenia tapped her hoof on her chin, "I'm sure you've already tried a great deal of activities in the past, but University is the time for new experiences, right?"

Nightshade laughed softly.  "You seem to enjoy investing your time in science more so than nature.  It's not odd for an Earth Pony to do such things."  She sent the sandwich wrappers to the trash can a few feet away.

Psych Ward glanced at Minty unloading her things.  Should she say hi?  She did that already.  She thought it best to give her some time along.  Her stomach was nearly empty and she was sure that there had to be food somewhere.  She finished unpacking and knotted a few bits into her sweater sleeve before leaving the room.

She watched the wrappers float away before looking back at her own. With a flick of her hoof it landed on the grass, not really anywhere near the target.

"Agh! Never works." she groaned as she stretched out across the ground, retrieved the wrapper and tried again. Three attempts later she settled for standing up and placing it inside instead. "Ok, I admit it, kind of wish I could do the whole 'floaty' thing."

Zatiko sniffed, pushing the plant a little farther away on his dresser. His roommate had pounced on his uncertainty and was now becoming incredibly nosy. "It is a plant from my home country," He replied quietly. "It's thorns are quite sharp, to protect from predators. Watch yourself."

The zebra resumed unpacking, casting guarded glances at his roommate. Finally, he sighed. "What is it like in Ponyville?" He asked, not looking at Pelate. It was only polite. As soon as he had the opportunity to find a quiet place to be alone, he was seizing it. Small talk was not his forte, and he was growing increasingly frustrated with himself.
