Silver nosed Minty to see if she would move but she was motionless.

 

He shot Cinderblock a worried glance. "Do you think she will be ok?" He asked. "I wonder where Impetus is."

 

Silver thought back to the beginning of the mission where he had pranced about and played at the thought of the trill of adventure. He didn't feel much like prancing now. One is his friends was hurt, one missing and another possibly wounded or killed. 

 

"What was I thinking back then" he said quietly to himself shaking his head. He slumped down in a heap beside Minty looking worried and miserable. He slid one wing over her back.

 

"Wake up soon, sweet friend" he said.

"Aha!" Redwave exclaimed loudly.

 

"Yes I see them I believe. Let us make hast: I cannot leave this place fast enough - It's been far too long since I've had good, solid decking beneath my hooves."

 

 

"She's going to be okay, isn't she?" Cinder asked tentatively, mostly to reassure herself.

 

In the thick of the mission, stress and panic could easily drown out fear for her friends but now... The reality seemed so much more intense.

 

Shes got to be... we finished, we won! She's got to be okay!"

"Yes I see them I believe. Let us make hast: I cannot leave this place fast enough - It's been far too long since I've had good, solid decking beneath my hooves."

 

" I'll fly ahead and get your healing stuff ready." Lyona flew to the group, and quickly got out some bandages. After laying them out, she looked at everypony.

 

" It's another half-hour trek to Ponyville. I found Redwave, he's alive and walking. The more injured ponies will require the help of the less-injured ones. Silver, can you carry Minty? I'll make sure that she doesn't fall off. Cinder, Redwave might need some help so you'll be his aid."

"She's going to be okay, isn't she?" Cinder asked tentatively, mostly to reassure herself. In the thick of the mission, stress and panic could easily drown out fear for her friends but now... The reality seemed so much more intense. Shes got to be... we finished, we won! She's got to be okay!"

 

"We'll make sure she's ok" Silver reassured Cinder. "She's breathing steadily, that's a good sign."

 

 

 

" It's another half-hour trek to Ponyville. I found Redwave, he's alive and walking. The more injured ponies will require the help of the less-injured ones. Silver, can you carry Minty? I'll make sure that she doesn't fall off. Cinder, Redwave might need some help so you'll be his aid."

 

"I can carry her" He tells Lyona. "Where is Impetus? Perhaps some of us should go on ahead and take the wounded with us?"

 

@, "I take it Gmork is finished?" Silver said turning to Redwave. "You don't look so good... " he added with concern. "but I must say,... I'm glad you were with us"

 

He extended his hoof towards Redwave for a brohoof.

"I am fine!" Muttered Redwave, wearily bumping hooves with the Pegasus. "Your 'magical friendship' seemed to work just fine, but I gutted him just to be safe."

"Okay... Can we go now?" Cinder said, peering into the forest. Even without Gmork's influence it was creepy: she didn't like it at all.

 

She also wasn't much of a fan of the amount of blood they had managed to lose collectively. Or Minty's condition. And she suspected that the second time the fog had fallen wouldn't have been great for Lyona...

Silver Note slid down beside Minty and hoisted her onto his back.

 

"Yes, lets go." He agreed. He glanced over at Lyona. "Where to?" he asked, awaiting his orders. there was a certain amount of sadness in his voice. "this mission has left me forever changed" he thought to himself.

"Take care of her Silver..." Cinder said softly, briefly burying her face in his mane.

 

"... Or we'll kill you." Added Redwave, In a voice which was as close to resembling a joke as he could manage, given his slightly singed vocal chords.

 

Cinder shot him a disapproving glance.

 

"... and take care of yourself too, okay?"

@Mikestar "Take care of her Silver..." Cinder said softly, briefly burying her face in his mane.

 

Silver shivered slightly at her touch. He so wished that they were in a different place and under different circumstances. then he would just hold her close and not let go til all her worries disappeared. But, his priorities were to help Minty and follow Lyona's orders until they were safely back in ponyville.

 

"When we get back to town" He said to Cinder, "Maybe we could...." Silver was blushing. "I dunno. Would you ummm... want to have dinner? With me that is. I mean naturally you will have dinner" Silver winced. He knew he was blowing this! "I probably sound like an idiot!" he scolded himself.

 

Something else was on his mind. Derpy! Had Equestria lost her forever. His expression suddenly took on a deep sadness and his ears drooped.

 

 

 

"... Or we'll kill you." Added Redwave, In a voice which was as close to resembling a joke as he could manage, given his slightly singed vocal chords. Cinder shot him a disapproving glance. "... and take care of yourself too, okay?"

  A single tear rolled down Silver's face at her memory.

 

Snapping out of his sad mode for a minute Silver smirked at Redwave's jest. "You'd better be careful" he told the red maned stallion. "Or you and I might start getting along" he jested back. Strange how this adventure had changed them. When you have each others back, you suddenly feel closer to everypony.

 

He turned back to Cinder. "I'm not injured" he reassured her. "At least not physically" he added as an after thought.

"You have my word that it shall not be so." Smirked Redwave before breaking into a hacking cough, holding up a hoof to show that he was okay. It took a couple of seconds for him to regain his composure. "We have reputations to uphold, after all."

 

Cinder couldn't help but smile a little at the two of them: and at what she had just heard.

"I'd like that." She said. "After this is over, I mean. When we're all safe."

 

'Look at you! This isn't like you at all Cinder... I mean, in a good way!' Her mind-voice returned to barrage thoughts at her again. She was relieved in a way: It always seemed so quiet without the constant narration. 'Prioritize though! You're not out of the woods yet. Heh. Out of the woods. And you're in a forest. I'm good at this...'

"Where to?"

 

" Straight ahead, to Ponyville." Lyona flew over Silver, keeping her one injured hoof close to her. This mission has really changed us...

 

(Time skip woo)

 

After trotting along the path for about half an hour, they finally reached civilization. As they walked into town, several ponies stopped what they were doing, then began to cheer.

 

Lyona smiled bashfully at the audience, before her expression turned serious again. " Somepony please call a doctor, we've got several injured ponies, and one in a coma."

 

A few members of the audience dashed of, and in a matter of minutes medical help had arrived. Two of the ponies were carrying a stretcher for Minty.

Silver turned to Lyona. 'is she going to be ok? I know they are cheering for us, but i don't feel like cheering." he said hanging his head. "We lost Derpy, and we could lose Minty. What's to cheer for?" Silver sadly walked away from the group and sat under a lamp post.

 

"I really didn't do much anyway" he thought. As soon as he knew that he was out of ear shot, he lets a few tears fall for the loss of one of his closest friends. "I'll never forget you Derpy" he said quietly.

"I require a drink, my payment and a great deal of appreciation for committing such a noble deed!" Smirked Redwave to the crowd, "Brandy! I would share a drink with you all before I return home."

 

He looked remorsefully in the direction they had taken Minty, shook his head to clear it and fixed the snarky expression back on his face: It was better this way.

"We lost Derpy, and we could lose Minty. What's to cheer for?"

 

" I need you all to come with me, to get patched up as well." One of the doctors had stayed behind, waiting for them.

" Minty's not dead, and she won't ever be. She's strong, and will get through. " Lyona stood in front of Silver, then her tone softened. " And, we didn't see Derpy die. I have a sneaking suspicion that she's still alive. I bet we'll see her soon enough." Lyona smiled, but she looked as if she just wanted to curl up and sleep. " Let's go follow that doctor."

Cinder followed close beside the others, feeling much better now that she was back in civilisation. She kept glancing around at them before she finally spoke up.

 

"I don't think I'm cut out for the guard." She said. "I think I'm going to resign after all this."

 

She smiled despite herself.

 

"I'll take my adventures when I fall into them. I don't need to go looking for more."

" You might be right. I heard that they have a pet shop in Ponyville, I might take that on instead. I'll still go on a mission if it needs to be done, though." Lyona was still flying, and her wings were beginning to get tired from the strain. " Dealing with animals will be nothing compared to the Everfree."

" We gotta get to the hospital first. If I sleep now you all are going to have to carry me, and I'm not too light." Lyona said with a joking tone. " I'll sleep once I get the news that everypony's fine and on the road to recovery. " Besides, this hoof is not going to give me an easy sleep, hurts like heck. 

 

 

 

"when did we last sleep?"

 

" Two or three days ago. I think."

" We gotta get to the hospital first. If I sleep now you all are going to have to carry me, and I'm not too light." Lyona said with a joking tone. " I'll sleep once I get the news that everypony's fine and on the road to recovery. " Besides, this hoof is not going to give me an easy sleep, hurts like heck. 

 

"How far away is this hospital?" Silver asked "I don't think I can walk another step, or fly. I suppose I could...." Before Silver could finish his sentence he collapsed, Exhaustion finally over taking him. He struggled to stand but couldn't find his hoofing.

Before the doctor could move, Lyona was already at her teammate's side. " We're almost there. You can see the building already." Only a few meters away was the hospital. After a few seconds, the doors opened and another group of ponies with a stretcher walked out.

"Silver!" Cinder shouted, rushing to his side but far too weak to be of any assistance herself: between fatigue and her wounds she could do little more than watch helplessly as she failed to support the pegasus.

 

 

Redwave glanced about nervously. He didn't want to leave like this, but it was the easiest way. For him, and for them. In the commotion, he slipped into the crowd and kept his head down as he pushed towards the edge, intending to find Kingfisher and the ship before anypony even noticed that he had left.

 

"Change of career, Red?"

 

He stopped dead. He knew that voice: even if he hadn't heard it for years.

 

"Not at all Scribe, I hear that you might have though." He said to the Unicorn blocking his path. "It is good to see you, but shall we speak on the move?"

 

The two of them made their way out of the crowd, Scribes gaudy armour acting as a decent distraction to keep eyes away from Redwave.

 

"Leaving so soon? Kind of thought you might stick around a while." The unicorn asked.

 

Redwave sighed, a sound of genuine longing.

 

"I might have, cousin. Sisters know i have reason to... but I have need to see somepony in Saddle Arabia and I know not how long I have to get there." He said, moving a hoof to check that the gemstone was still tucked away safely. "It is easier for me this way. I'm sure you understand."

 

Smirking halfheartedly, as if some deep emotion was fighting against it, he turned his back.

 

"Cinderblock gave me your details. I'll write... come visit sometime... for now though, I really need to take my leave."

 

He started to walk towards the coast before stopping, his smirk fully forming - a twinkle if mischief in his eye. Would the great Redwave leave without causing one last piece if trouble for his new friends?

 

"Watch out for the grey one, he's harmless enough but I think he might have a thing for Cinder." He said, chuckling as he cantered into the distance.

" He'll be fine miss. It's just the fatigue getting to him, that's all." One of the doctors informed Cinder before heading into the building with Silver on the stretcher.

 

" You'll have to come with be." A white pony with pink hair and blue eyes approached them. " I'm Nurse Redheart. " She informed them as they walked into the building. " We'll have to examine you in order, since your pegasus friend is taking quite a lot of our doctors. "

 

" Will she be okay?" Lyona asked, great concern in her eyes. Nurse Redheart nodded.

 

" Yes, she will be fine. Now, which one of you needs the most medical attention?"

 

" Redwave's really injured, so he should go-" Lyona turned around to address the stallion himself, only to find him gone. No! Where did he go? What if he collapsed on the way and nopony saw? The mare was now anxiously flittering around in the hospital. I have to find him!

"What..? Redwave..?" Cinder glanced around in shock at the revelation that he wasn't behind them any more.

 

'You knew he wasn't going to stick around. He always made it pretty clear that he wasn't looking for friends... Shame though, I thought he might have changed his mind.'

 

"He's probably gone to get that drink he kept harping on about. I'm sure he'll turn up sooner or later." Cinder said without confidence. Without anything really: she was only minutes from dropping off herself and concentration was difficult.

The commotion in the hospital made it almost impossible to rest. 'I'm fine" he kept telling the nurses. He hadn't realized how tiring it had been carrying Cinder to safety. After a short time he dragged himself out of bed and looked for Lyona.

 

 

 

The mare was now anxiously flittering around in the hospital. I have to find him!

 

"Where's Minty? Is she ok?" He still felt a bit unsteady on his legs but he was determined to make sure his friends were ok. "did anypony ever find Impetus?"

 

Silver noticed Cinder's exhausted state.

 

"This hospital is no place to rest. We should find a quieter spot. Rest is really all I need. My injures are all older ones."

"He's probably taking a swim somewhere."Cinder smiled through half-lidded eyes, the world seeming to rush closer to her before retreating again. 

 

'You really need to take it easy Cinder. You're running on pretty much nothing and you know what happened the last time we relied on your 'medicines' too much...'
 
She caught her balance before stumbling and blinked widely to try and force her eyes to stay open.
 
"I live nearby... we've got plenty of room, spare beds and stuff." She shrugged. "We have guests pretty often, you're all welcome to stay if you want. I can't see Scribe having a problem with it."
 
It was strange: he wasn't exactly hard to miss - how come she hadn't seen him in the crowd? Was he out of town?

After they had fixed her hoof, Lyona went back to the main part of the hospital. She limped to them with a crutch, nursing a broken leg. Thankfully it was still numb after the unicorns had done their work.

 

 

 

"Where's Minty? Is she ok?" He still felt a bit unsteady on his legs but he was determined to make sure his friends were ok. "did anypony ever find Impetus?"

 

" Yes, she's fine. Sleeping now. The doctors say that she's going to get out of her coma in two days or so. I think they're tending to him now, I saw him being taken by a group of 'em."  

 

 

 

"I live nearby... we've got plenty of room, spare beds and stuff." She shrugged. "We have guests pretty often, you're all welcome to stay if you want. I can't see Scribe having a problem with it."

 

" If you don't mind." Lyona smiled.
