Clover nodded. "Of course. We can go to the furthest corner of the wards and I will cast a spell that will muffle all noise within our corner. That means that nopony will be able to hear what we say, and we can talk in private."

 

Sanura decided to get a fire started and make supper, before everypony turned in for the night. She asked some of the others to start putting up the tents.

Lost nodded and headed off for the far corner. "Alright, thank you. I think it's about time I explained to you who it is I keep bringing up. But I don't like to talk about it. Not unless it's with people I really trust. People who I think deserve to know."

 

Why am I telling her? I shouldn't get my emotions tied up in this mission, and she doesn't need to know.

 

But she ought to know. And it's too late to change my mind now.

Star shivered and opened her eyes from her nap, and saw Spark's back facing outwards from their hut inside the village.

 

"Mmph." Star grunted as she sat up, wiping her eyes.

 

"Hey. Nice to see you awake." Spark said, and turned to face Star.

 

Star came to sit next to Spark on the door frame, looking out into the village that trapped them.

Clover nodded. "I'll keep it a secret, whatever you tell me," she said.

Shadow Star was walking down the street. The hours of darkness had passed, tho a mist still hung around the streets. She looked about herself as she walked, keeping an eye out. When she reached the house where Star and Spark were, she stopped. She had become friends with the two, having in common the fact that they were trapped in the village just as she was.

 

"Hi," she said to them, waving a hoof. "I won't say good morning, cuz it never is in this place."

Star, still slightly drowsy, waved sluggishly, mumbling a rough "Hello"

 

Spark waved more cheerfully to Shadow, and gave a slanted smile.

 

"Then I guess you could say 'Good morning-ish"

Lost sighed. "Back at the castle, I said you reminded me of a student I had once. Well, she was more than just a student. We ended up falling in love. I was never happier than I was in those days, and it wasn't long before we were engaged. We were all set to marry as soon as I got back from my next expedition. The whole time, all I could think about was how much I loved her, and how excited I was to see her again when I got back. But the flipside of that was that I was constantly worrying that something might happen to her while I was away. There was nothing that scared me more. I came home only to find out that my worst nightmare had become a reality. She was murdered, and I hadn't been there to stop it from happening. Ever since then, she's haunted my thoughts, my dreams, always looking at me with these sad, lonely eyes. And when that happens, all I can think about is how I should have been there. How it's my fault she's dead because I couldn't protect her. It's been years now, but it hasn't gotten any easier."

Shadow Star laughed. "That will do," she said. "It doesn't get any easier inside this village; I've been here for years, so many I stopped counting. But I'm still the same age. I haven't stopped hoping that we will one day escape; if we do, it'll be strange for my son. I'll be practically the same age as him."

Clover put a comforting hoof on Lost's shoulder. "I'm sorry," she said. "I wish I could fully understand, but I've never lost anypony close to me in that way. In fact, I've been too busy with first my studies then my work to have relationships. I'm glad you told me, tho. It's always best to share this kind of thing."

Lost nodded. "Thank you. Thank you for listening, and for understanding, or at least trying to understand. I don't like having to push my burdens onto others like this, but sometimes it's more than I can take, and I need to talk about it. You're... you're a very nice young mare, you know that?"

Clover blushed. "I try to be," she replied. She sniffed the air. "Smells like dinner."

 

Sanura had gotten a fire going and was busily cooking. The tents were up and after dinner, she planned to turn in for the night, trusting to the wards that Clover and Lost had put up to protect the camp. She was worried about entering the village but had decided that it had to be done, so no point in worrying about it, really.

Josh wandered around the village doing what he did everyday searching for any hurt pony or anything at all to escape the village. As usual there was none of the second but that was to be expected after years of being trapped within the village that Josh thought to be a hell. "ah well i may as well go back to my shelter" he thought as he reached the far side of the village

Shadow Star saw Josh on the other side of the street. "Hey, Josh!" she called out. "Come over here and join us." Shadow Star was grateful to Josh for having fixed her up after the last time she'd fought her nightmare creature; the snake had hit her on the shoulder with its tail and she'd been hurt quite badly. Now tho, she tried to avoid it whenever possible.

Josh looked over to Shadow Star and smiled. "yea sure" he called over as a reply and headed over to Shadow Star, Star and Spark.

"Anything wrong nobody hurt today is there?" Josh asked in a worried voice."If there is im sure i could help in one way or another" he said as he hoped what looked like a kind smile spread across his face

Vinyl had been walking around the village for a while, thinking about the usual things, like how much time she lost, how long she's been here, how old she should be, and her fantasy life outside the village. These things weighed heavily on her mind at times and they only helped to bring her mood down. Through the fog, she saw four familiar ponies, so she walked over to them. "Hey y'all. How's your morning been?"

Lost nodded. "I guess we should go meet back up with the others, then. But first, I just want to say that I... I'm just glad to have you with me for this. I can't help but feel more at ease around you. And I know it'll be a lot easier entering that village knowing there's at least one pony who understands me."

"Same here," Clover said, giving Lost a one hoofed hug. "I'm going to be less worried about meeting the zombie ponies again if I'm with you."

"Terribly, as per the usual," she replied. I've spent the last 7,305 days here, twenty years. Yes, I've kept track. Today would be my forty second birthday and I'm not a day over twenty two, although I'm not exactly complaining about that. My greatest fear is living forever, which is why, I think, that nothing else has really come after me since the first year or so." Vinyl sighed and sat down on the ground next to them

Lost hugged her back. "Zombie ponies? That sounds pretty awful. If you ever want to talk about it, I'll be here for you."

 

What am I doing? I can't afford to get attached. Who knows if either of us will come back alive?

 

...But then, maybe that's just another reason to make as much of the time we have as possible.

Star had dozed off, and Spark put Star's head on her own lap and started stroking her hair.

 

Spark listened to the conversation in silence, wanting to add her own thoughts to the mix but not really sure what to say, so she stayed silent.

"It happened back when I was only a filly," Clover said. "So long ago, but I still remember it. Since you told me your secret, I can surely tell you mine. It's a bit of a long story, tho."

Shadow Star sighed when she heard Vinyl's story. "I just wish that I'd never taken Straight Ace up on that bet," she said. "I never believed the tales I heard about a creepy village; if I had, I wouldn't be here. My son was just a colt when I left; now, he'd be an adult."

Lost nodded. "You don't have to tell me if you don't want to. Don't feel obligated because I told you about my past. But of course if you want to tell me, I'm more than happen to listen. And I can't do much to protect you from your fear if I don't understand what it is."

"I want to tell you, tho," Clover replied. "I haven't talked to anypony about it for so long. You see, my friend Stargazer and I played hooky from school one day and went exploring in the Everfree Forest so that we could find our cutie marks. I didn't know what my special talent was back then; altho I liked magic, I didn't really know what type of magic I could do best. We found a village that was full of ponies who were normal during the day, but turned into zombie ponies at night. I managed to save my friend by coming up with a spell on the spot and levitating both of us to safety. Cuz my talent was for inventing spells, my cutie mark appeared. But the zombie ponies were so scary, I had nightmares for ages after."

Josh smiled"and that means giving up should be an option? I have looked around the perimeter of this place and can't find any changes but if I give up I will.never know and if we keep looking one day we could find a weak spot" Josh got more exited as he said this

Lost nodded understandingly. "I can certainly see why that would scare you so much. You were strong to be able to think clearly enough to invent a spell in that situation. But I don't think you really need to be too scared of them anymore. After all, if you could escape back then, I'm sure you could now, too. Besides, I'll do my best to protect you."
