Ladies and gentlemen. Welcome to the 2014 MLPF World Cup in Hayzil.

 

Yes you read correctly. I want to host a tournament of epic proportions to celebrate the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. It will be a massive voting battle until the end to determine the best pony of the forums. Every voting match will count, because vote differential will matter when characters are tied. More on that. I hope to start this very soon, but first, I want to explain the three stages of the World Cup:

 

1. MLPF World Cup Qualifying: There will be 128 characters participating. I have already come up with the full roster. I will show you all the full roster before we begin the tournament so we make sure we don't miss anypony important. There will be 16 groups of 8 that will be randomly drawn by @Zhooves' random character generator. Each character will play 7 "voting" matches where YOU will have 24 hours to vote for your favourite character. Once the 24 hours are up, the votes will be tallied and the character with the most votes wins. The winning character receives 3 points and the losing character gets none. If there is a draw, it will be 1 point each. A draw occurs when there is less than 1% difference between the two characters after the time is up. After the 7 matches, the top two characters from each group will progress to the MLPF World Cup.
2. MLPF World Cup Group Stages: There will be 32 characters by this stage. They will be randomly drawn into 8 groups of 4. Same match format as MLPF World Cup qualifying, but each character will play 3 games instead. Once again, 3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw, and 0 points for a loss. Top two characters in each group progresses to the knockout stages.
3. Knockout Stages: This is crunch time. There will only be one winner by the end of this. Single elimination. 48 hours to vote instead of the usual 24. If in the rare event that the two characters are tied after 48 hours, we will have extra time. Another 12 hours in hopes of a tiebreaker. The rules for draw will be eliminated and single votes WILL matter. Matches can be separated by a single vote here.

If it so happens that at either the qualifying stages or group stages there are ponies tied in points, then the following tiebreaker rules will be used in order of priority: 

1. Voter Differential
2. Head-to-Head Matchup
3. Votes For
4. Votes Against
5. Random Draw

If this idea really takes off, I hope to start the qualifying at the end of the month! I'll provide the rosters to you sometime next week as well. After the rosters are agreed, then I will have the random draw occurring two weeks from now.
