It's a 10 episode mini series by HBO about second world war in the pacific ; it follows a few people around, if I remember correctly based on real peoples stories.

And it shows how they deal with losing their friends and the horrors of war etc. (and ofc there's lots of action too)

Unfortunately, yes. My wife was rather into it. Period drama. Late Victorian(?) Through to post wwi. Follows trials and tribulations of family and staff at DA. (Lord whathisname knobs one of the housemaids etc) Each series jumped on a few years on from last.
