The ponies also use the humans as mates too. It's not the main focus of the story but it's there. You could skip most of it though.

The fact that the humans were their slaves, and that the main character lost his senses. This happens in the first movie, but he regains it in the same movie. The humans were really just primitive pests to the apes in the first and second movie, but become slaves in the last movie (some time traveling occurs; you have to watch them to understand).

The humans aren't really slaves though. They aren't sapient. They are just like normal animals.
