Do I REALLY have to say his name? So many people already have. So instead of simply saying Mario, I will post a picture of him.

 

He may have been the first video game character or game like Pong, but everyone knows his name and his reputation precedes him. 

 

FUN FACT: Mario was allegedly named after the warehouse landlord that Nintendo was using at the time, Mario Segale, who had confronted the Nintendo President at the time Minoru Arakawa demanding rent payment. Shigeru Miyamoto is the actual creator and mastermind, who is also credited for creating the Donkey Kong franchise, Star Fox, Legend of Zelda and the more recent Pikmen.

The first thing that popped into my head after reading the title was Pac-Man. I think the Mario Bros would be in second place, but I think Pac-Man does a good job symbolizing video games.

I'd go with Mario, Pac Man, Tetrominoes, and possibly Pikachu. I mean, someone who's never played any kind of game in their life would know what these are purely through the media and pop culture today.

I know one thing for sure. Mario beats Sonic in the MOST ironic thing. In fact, I think Mario IS number one on this list. I mean, nintendo is/was/and probably will be very popular, and Mario is their mascot.
