More variety in best pony settings.

EDIT: I figured I would edit this now, so the list has been updated, thanks to Chaotic Discord. Please do read his post below for more info, he explains more about it.

 

If there is one thing that is bothering me at the moment it is the lack of variety in the best pony profile setting. Currently the site limits you to the mane 6 characters, though you are given race options that fall outside of the mane 6's race. I think the forum should add more variety in the options of best pony and best pony race, this would allow people a little more room for customization. I am not saying this should apply to Original Characters, this should only apply to InShow Characters. I know it can be done as in the picture below I added it with simple HTML, and yes I know there is more than HTML behind this option, it needs to be added to a database in order to save the option. I am sure it can be done easily.

Also I know I spelt Cadance's name wrong in the picture, I have a dog named Cadence.

Not every persons favorite pony is a mane 6 pony, there are plenty of people who have a background or a secondary pony as their favorite so this does makes sense.

Yeah, it would be hard to add them all, but over time people can suggest new ones and the site manager can wait for the list to build up before adding more to the list. But ultimately it will be up to them which ones they would add..

'Bat Pony' and 'Changeling or Other' are added to species. Changelings actually being considered ponies or not is an outright topic in of itself (I tend to think they're a hybrid if nothing else, ergo might not even count), but I'm not interested in debating it with people.

The last four are the only bg ponies I'm giving, as of this point (post S3, pre S4). IMO, a bg pony's popularity needs to be absolutely, retardedly fandom-wide to be listed as its' own option, here. Characters like, for example Doctor Whooves, are popular, but at the end of the day, most of his fanbase comes from brony/Doctor Who hybrid fans, not Friendship is Magic, alone. As far as FiM alone is concerned, he's a brown pony who spins hour glasses, and has no such timey wimey adventures in other worlds, and that pony doesn't have many fans when the Doctor Who assumption isn't at all applied.

 

Not trying to discriminate other bg ponies who various people may consider popular enough. I just have to draw the line somewhere, and it happens to be at this point.

 

Almost every other BG pony I can think of isn't up to par with the four I'm listing, either. 'Nobody cares about BonBon unless she's with Lyra' is a saying that comes to mind as an example of this approach.

 

A few more BG ponies or other characters may be added in the future as S4 develops characters and makes them more prominent in the show and fanbase, but I firmly stand on not wanting to turn this list into something absolutely ridiculous. Highest-tier BG ponies and rational main, secondary or tertiary characters is where I'm personally comfortable.

I don't wish to be demanding, but I just recently joined, and I was really disappointed that zebra wasn't on the list of pony races when zebras are actually more closely related to ponies than changelings and "bat ponies" are.  Could you please add them?

I mean, if it's too much trouble,  then I wouldn't want to ask you to go out of your way just for one simple option like that, but if it's okay, I'm sure that would make a lot of zebra bronies and Zecora fans really happy.  :3

I know it's maybe a question that will just lead to an endless debate whether to add more options or not, but now with the possibility to choose some background ponies and several secondary characters while there is an "Zebra" and "Changeling or other" option in "Best Pony Race", why aren't there any non-pony characters in the choices for "Best Pony" now? Just asking. Okay, any other characters wouldn't fit into "Best Pony" then...

I have an even better idea. Why not make the Best Pony text space free to type in. Instead of choosing a pony from the list, you can just type it in?

I'd make it a habit to read the topic thoroughly before making new suggestions :3 I've answered all of your points, when I elaborated on where I've personally drawn the line on adding things. Can read it earlier in the topic, here.

 

Zebra and Changeling 'can' count under the term 'pony', because they look and function practically the same. That's why they are there. 'Other' is a catch twenty for anything else that covers anything else pony. Non-pony races that are clearly completely different, like griffons, buffalo, etc, aren't being included, which is why non-pony races also aren't in Best Pony.

 

As far as Button goes, he's gotten one (notorious) fan animation so far. One Yes, he'll be getting more as the series progresses, but the point is, Vinyl and Octavia, Lyra and Derpy all star in dozens of fan animations and are rampant throughout fanart throughout the fandom's history. Button will need to continually skyrocket in popularity and maintain that over a considerable period to get anywhere near where they are.

That would solve the problem. Most people seemed to prefer the idea of having a list, and having a list instead of a free for all space allows no chance of abuse or misuse of the field, but I'm not opposed to changing it to a text field. Less work staff-side |'D

I understand your argumentation. It's just weird - at least for me - to see "Zebra" in "Best Pony Race", but not Zecora under "Best Pony" then, if they can count as ponies. As I said, that's probably just me. I know, to add more options, like non-pony races and characters, might not be what most people want it to be and not the ideal solution (even though I think there are many people here who'd pick Discord in an instant), but I guess that's simply the problem when you have a list, especially like it is now.. There can only be a limited choice.

I think it should be left as Pony races/Ponies only. If you start adding stuff like Zebra and Zecora people are going to bug and bug and bug for more and more non-Ponies and non-Pony races.
