MadPointer 75 June 24, 2014 Author Share June 24, 2014 I’m bumping this thread because it turned you that 81% of currently active members joined relatively recently. It would be interesting to know whether they were even aware of past controversies and what was their opinion of them.
Guest90210 3,569 June 25, 2014 Share June 25, 2014 (edited) Interesting topic. I really dived into the fandom AFTER viewing all of the episodes, and when I did I read up on all of the controversies and past incidents to get a better understanding of it's history. Here's my thoughts, Feeling Pinkie Keen - I knew there would be some backlash over this. I wasn't really a big fan of the episode either. The Mysterious Mare Do Well - I had no clue this would be one of the most hated episodes of the series when I viewed it. I never thought it was bad, even after viewing it a second time aftering learning of it's hatred among bronies. I think it's a good episode, not amazing but not terrible. Derpy - I saw the original, unedited Derpy upon first viewing, so I didn't know until afterwards. I can see why people complained, as it should have never been censored in the first place. Spike at Your Service - Again, I had no idea this would turn out to be hated. I loved it, not sure why it garnered so much hostility. Magical Mystery Cure - I did sort of know there was some controversy over this before viewing because shortly after my first exposure to the show via YouTube, I checked out the MLP Subreddit and there were some discussions going on regarding the episode. I didn't fully investigate it until after seeing the episode myself. Upon first viewing, I thought it was a decent episode with a rushed concept. Equestria Girls - I really wish I wouldn't have done this to spoil the surprise, but I randomly clicked a link to Equestria Girl's full movie on Dailymotion, and saw the first minute or so and noticed Twilight had wings. I was like "WHEN DOES THAT HAPPEN?!?!", and kept making guesses as to when the change would occur as I watched more and more episodes. I think I remember speculating that it would happen in the Season 3 premier, or at the Season 2 finale. Others - I also did some research into other random stuff such as the Las Pegasus Unicon incident, Bronycon controversies, Princess Molestia, and so on. It really gave me insight on what this fandom was like and what to expect down the road. Edited June 25, 2014 by Rivendare
Courageous Thunder Dash 7,825 June 25, 2014 Share June 25, 2014 The first thing I learned about was Derpy. I then later found out about Feeling Pinkie Keen, and then ACW. I'm a fan of MMC and EQG, but not Mysterious Mare-Do Well. I felt like it was more of a bashing than a teaching. deadprofile 1,123 June 25, 2014 Share June 25, 2014 I been an active member for along time here....and honestly, I don't consider specific episodes to be controversies. People either like them, are meh about them, or hate them...That's how it is with any TV show. I like Feeling Pinkie Keen, and never saw any religious connotations to it until the fandom pointed it out (and I'm a Theologian), and even then, that's just reading too far into an episode on stuff that isn't objectively there and thus not a controversy. That is how all the other episodes are as well as Equestria Girls... I do believe the whole Derpy thing was controversial due to parental involvement and the actual censoring of her original voice (thank goodness I have that episode unedited). I think that was a stupid ordeal personally. As far as the that west coast Convention fiasco, I was (and still am) a bit confused about how it all went down, but overall the way I see it is that greedy people were at the reins, took the fandom for all its worth, and ran off with the money. A horrible situation that should never have happened, but exploitation brings monetary gain and that is evident everywhere you go (in other words, it's not just in fandoms), and people who commit such endeavors should not exist imo.... Princess Molestia....well, personally not my cup of tea, and that's a part of the fandom that is not my cup and thus I ignore. C&D of fan works...Stupidity and greed are at the helm here. That's the "joy" of big companies... "In fire iron is born, by fire it is tamed"
Simon 4,557 June 25, 2014 Share June 25, 2014 I knew about most of these controversies either before I really became active in the fandom or not long after. Anyway here are my thoughts on them... Feeling Pinkie Keen / Mysterious Mare Do Well / Spike at Your Service - I get these episodes get a lot of hate, but I'd hardly call that a controversy. If there really was some controversy over these episodes the fandom has gotten over it in a big way because outside of a few jokes about Mysterious Mare Do Well being terrible, I haven't heard any references to this controversy... so I don't really have an opinion. I mean none of these are the greatest episodes, but I wouldn't say they're worth losing sleep over. Now for the bigger controversies... Derpy: - I knew about the Derpy controversy before I had ever even gotten into the fandom. I love Derpy, but I think she has to be carefully used. She's meant to stay in the background, not as the focus in scenes, and I think controversy was inevitable after the Last Roundup. Derpy was a great nod to the fandom, but that scene was so overdone and had so much Derpyness to it that it was inevitable that someone would be offended. I'm glad that she's appearing in episodes again, and I still go and find the original Derpy scene when I watch the Last Roundup, but I think the staff just needs to know to be more careful and subtle with Derpy. Magical Mystery Cure - I love this episode to death. Honestly it was this episode and the controversy around it that really got me into the fandom. I had watched a couple episodes before, but I was hearing so much stuff about Twilight getting wings that I wanted to see what all the fuss was about, and I really fell in love with the music in this episode and just loved how everything was done. So in a way, I owe being in the fandom to this controversy and this episode. I think the big issue here was Hasbro should have never advertised Alicorn Twilight like they did. Again, I think it was a huge misstep by the Hasbro staff and that's what really made this controversial. If they just let it happen there would have been discussions about whether people liked it or not after it was done, but since it came so far in advance and everybody knew about it, they had already decided whether they'd like the episode before they even saw it, which just isn't a good thing... so yeah... I think this could have been largely avoided or at least minimized had the advertising been better handled. Equestria Girls - Again, I heard about this back when it was just being rumored about long before I was in the fandom, and it's funny because I thought for absolute sure that the rumor was fake. I was showing it to friends and telling them that I thought this was absolutely fake and there's no way Hasbro would be dumb enough to do this. Then when I found out it was real, I pretty much thought that Hasbro decided to go shopping for some sharks to jump and it would be a disaster. I wasn't wrong, there was some serious shark jumping going on with Equestria Girls, but somehow they made the jump look cool and when I finally sat down and watched it, I actually did enjoy the movie. I still think it was a stupid idea, but it gave me a huge pile of respect for the show's writers and actors, because they really did manage to pull off what should have been a complete disaster. Pastel 7,630 June 25, 2014 Share June 25, 2014 (edited) Feeling Pinkie Keen: ?????? What's wrong with this episode? ...Religion? Theology? Seriously? -_- The Mysterious Mare Do Well: While it's not a very good episode, I thought it was decent, but I understand why some people didn't like it... Derpy: I loved her orignal voice and I'm extremely angry they changed it. It's so ridiculous. Derpy is my favorite pony and I'd love to hear her original voice and the other ponies calling her Derpy again. Really, they shouldn't have done that, she's such a great character... Spike at your Service: Same thing as TMMDW. Magical Mystery Cure: I totally understand the hate because I disliked this episode too. Equestria Girls: Same thing as Magical Mystery Cure, well, I thought it was average, not bad, but not good either. LZRD WZRD 1,929 June 25, 2014 Share June 25, 2014 (edited) Aside from the Derpy controversy all of the others have been massive overreactions or just plain silly imo. Especially Alicorn Twilight. I mean, people were saying it ruined the show for them lol. So what, she got a promotion and the animators slapped wings on her. Big deal Also, The Feeling Pinkie Keen controversy is absolute BS. Now I'll admit I hated the episode because of what I THOUGHT it was about. But upon one rewatch several months later, I realize just how ridiculous the idea that it's promoting faith is. Aside from ONE poorly written sentence in the moral, the episode is actually PROMOTING critical thinking. Ashen Pathfinder 16,164 June 26, 2014 Share June 26, 2014 Honestly, the only controversies that really deserve to be called that death with Derpy, alicorn Twilight (barely), and Equestria Girls. I think on each of these there were posts on Equestria Daily telling folks to calm the heck down. Heck, I remember the death threats during the EG bit, and that some people who worked on the show were thinking of quitting. Some people just become too invested sometimes.
