Thoughts on the Crocodile

It looked really cool and the animation was really good on it :)

I know people are saying it was defeated to easily, but when you think about it, it was the same way you would in RL (and I think the everfree is ment to be a bit more like RL).

For one thing, it should have been called a C-ROCK-odile! Rather than Cragadile. Come on, that opportunity was so obvious!

Other than that, I'd love to see more of it and it's kind. Yet another monstrosity from the Everfree Forest that seems like it came straight from a DnD monster manual.

Thought it was pretty bad-ass. I always enjoy new monsters being introduced because, mythology and mythological creatures have always fascinated me. Seemed a bit more threatening and terrifying in appearance detail than some of the past monsters which were far more cartoony, so, that was neat, too. Granted, Megan did say S4 was going to be taking some liberties so, I imagine that's just one small example of numerous examples throughout the premiere. Certainly look forward to more creatures in the future :3

I liked the design of the crocodile and the scene itself, but I'm getting seriously pissed with all the random CGI things being thrown into every 2d animation these days.  I got a news flash for animators.  It looks TERRIBLE!  It has nothing to do with the quality of the animation, it looks stupid by virtue of being a random 3d animation in a 2d film.  There is no possible way to make it look good, because it looks so out of place.  There pretty much just pulling a "Look what we can do!" type thing.  It's just not necessary or cool.  Just draw a crocodile and be done with it.  You aren't going to get special points just because you hired a 3d animator to make one puppet for you and then slapped it over a 2d animation.

May I ask what exactly the problem is?

Nio that I disagree: I just dont understand.

How it is a 3D animation? I rewatched that scene but it didn't look as 3D to me.

Only animation flaw I have noticed was that rockodille's mowements weren't as smooth and flexible as of ponies.

What did I miss?

I mean 3D as in computer animated.  Technically it's just as 2D as the rest of the animations, but people refer computer animated stuff as 3D because it appears to have more depth.  The problem is that it's a cheap gimmick and it looks terrible.  2D animation is fine, CGI animation is fine, but combining them randomly is stupid.

Although I do have to say that I have seen cartoons that combine both throughout the show as part of their overall art style, and those shows can sometimes look good, because the 3D isn't so out of place, but when you have traditional 2D animation like 99.5% of the time and just throw in some CGI here and there it looks stupid.

Aren't they all computer animated?

I always thought what we see in MLP:FiM is like cutout animation with combined flat puppets, but it's computer itself what calculates adjustement of puppet's parts and motion instead of humans replacing parts each time.

Well ya it's draw in Flash, which is a computer program, but that's not the same thing as a 3D model.  It's a different kind of animating.  In flash there are only two axis, it's made on a computer yes, but they look hand drawn (and sometimes are).  3D modeling programs have 3 axis, so you can make "3D" objects.

I don't think you know exactly how Flash works. It is mostly hand draw, but you can save drawings as "Symbols" and copy and past them over and over again, so you only have to draw one part once.  You can even embed animations inside symbols.  That's how they do Celestia's wavy mane.  They make the animation once and then they can use it over and over again.

Not gonna lie, I enjoyed it! Like everyone else, it seemed like a nice step towards showing a bit more of a realistic monster. They don't expand on what's in the Everfree Forest often (creature wise) so I liked that they did that. It showed there were more species of one area, as well. The swamp, so to speak.
