(If this seems familiar, that's because I'm doing this for the second time, as technical difficulties brought an end to the first run several months ago. Fortunately, that gave me a chance to improve on it and change some things that didn't really work.)

 

Obviously, as the name implies, I'm planning to do an RP based on the manga/anime Bleach. I assume you've at least heard of it if you're reading this, so I'm not going to bother explaining it. But I do want to establish a few things. First of all, I haven't read the manga (yet) so I'm basing everything off of the anime. Second, I watched the subtitled episodes, and my impression is that most people watch the dubs, so if some of the terminology I use is different, that would be why. Third and finally, my hope is to make this so that it's still accessible to people who haven't seen/read Bleach, or at least not much of it, assuming any such people are interested. Oh, and maybe this goes without saying, but the RP is removed from any actual events that happen in the series, and none of the characters from the series will be involved, except possibly in extremely minor roles.

 

I'm hesitant to reveal too much about the story yet, but the bare basics are like this. All of the player characters are fairly high-ranking shinigami (soul reapers), and the RP is going to be set mostly, if not entirely, in Soul Society. Things are pretty much normal, or as normal as they ever are, until shinigami start disappearing. Before long, things start to get serious, and Soul Society descends into chaos as the shinigami start fighting amongst themselves. Which may have been the goal of whoever was behind the disappearances all along.

 

That's about as much as I want to say write now, although I may decide to add a little more later. And now for the rules:

 

1. No godmodding, no mary sues, no ludicrously overpowered characters, all the usual stuff. Really I shouldn't have to say this at all, but I feel obligated to.

 

2. If you want your character to have Bankai, they have to be at least Lieutenant/Vice Captain rank. There might be a few unusual exceptions where I'll allow it otherwise, and other characters might achieve Bankai during the events of the RP, but that's the general rule, at least.

 

3. PLEASE use proper spelling and grammar. It doesn't have to be perfect, but at least make an effort. Seriously, it annoys me more than just about anything else in roleplaying when people don't do that.

 

4. While I appreciate suggestions and the like, please remember that in the end, I'm the one in charge. I hate to make myself sound all tyrannical, but please don't challenge my authority. If you push me, I'm afraid I'll have to push back. Note that part of that means I may reject a character that I don't think is appropriate for this role-play.

 

If you're interested, please post basic information about your character, as well as their rank and the squad you want them to be in, along with the abilities of their zanpakutou. I'll post my own characters eventually.

As long as you understand the basics of the show (basically as long as you know enough that nothing I wrote in the OP was too confusing for you), you should be fine.

Sure, but it'll be easier once you have everything else sorted out for your character. Submit that, and I'll help you with a zanpakutou. Of course, there's no rush, so you can take your time doing it. I know you've already got another RP keeping you busy.

Yep. I mean, unless you wanted to make an entirely new character, I suppose. Basically just treat it the same as the Lyoko RP, except replacing their powers in Lyoko with a zanpakutou and stuff.

Here we go, wall of text incoming. Note that this is pretty much directly taken from a conversation I was having with someone over PM several months ago, so some of the phrasing might be weird.

 

The Zanpakutou os the primary weapon of the Shinigami. They're also the primary weapon of Vizard and Arrancar, but that's rather beside the point, and technically a vizard is still a Shinigami. Zanpakutou essentially means something like "soul-cutting sword", and it's one of the few things that can hurt spirits or hollows. Although a Zanpakutou appears to be a weapon, it is actually a sentient being in it's own right, and it's true form resides in the "inner world" of it's wielder (basically, somewhere inside their soul). A Shinigami is able to gain more power by bonding with their Zanpakutou and drawing out more of it's strength. All Zanpakutou have a unique name, which, once learned, allows the wielder to "release" it, giving it a unique appearance and special abilities (unreleased, all zanpakutou are virtually identical, though in some rare cases, a zanpakutou remains released permanently once it's been released for the first time). These releases have two stages- "shikai" and "bankai". Any Shinigami worth a damn is capable of shikai, and it's pretty much a requirement for becaming a seated officer in any of the thirteen squads. Bankai, on the other hand, is extremely difficult to achieve, and most Shinigami will never even come close. To achieve bankai requires years of meditation to manifest your Zanpakutou, which must then be defeated and forced into submission (in the series, there are two individuals who have achieved bankai in a matter of days using special- and incredibly dangerous- training methods, but those were extraordinary circumstances). Even after initially achieving bankai, it isn't considered safe to use it in combat until years have been spent training to refine it (again, there are exceptions, but it's still not a good idea). Bankai is far stronger than shikai, generally at least ten times stronger, and achieving it is one of the requirements of becoming a squad captain (although there is one strange exception in the series where Captain Zaraki Kenpachi never even learns shikai, but that's basically just because the eleventh squad is stupid and doesn't give a f***).

 

Oh, and one other thing: Shinigami don't age like normal people anyway, so I wouldn't worry too much about scaling up your character's age. The tenth squad captain in the show, for example, is just a kid.

Also, if you need help coming up with an ability for your zanpakutou, I can give you some ideas.

Let me see if I got this right.

  

A Zanpakutou is a soul-cutting sword that can change shape once released. But to release the sword you have to learn it's name and once you have, it changes into a unique shape and has special powers. It has two stages, shikai and benkai. Benkai takes years to master but anyone can use shikai. Well, any Shinigami. And Shinigami fight hollows/spirits.

 

Is that basically it?

 

EDIT: Benkai also has a special requirement and that is to defeat your Zanpakutou manifestation. And to beat it into submission and even that takes years of meditating.

Aside from the fact that you spelled bankai wrong, that about covers it, yeah. And Shinigami only normally fight hollows. Technically Shinigami are spirits.

Not a problem. I can't say that I really have any ideas for your character in particular, but I do have a video with a bunch of examples.

Anyway, try to think of powers related to your character's personality. Or failing that, just something you think is cool.

But yeah. I'm intrigued, to say the least. While I haven't really watched too far beyond the first few episodes of the Arrancar Arc, I've watched Bleach in the past. At least enough to know how things operate on a basic level. I had actually made a Bleach/MLP (that will take some editing to make him human) character a while back on another site, that I will have to dig deep to find when I have a computer, but if you're up to having me (and I'm able to remain alive in six role plays), I'd like to throw my name - and eventually character - in for consideration.
