Adorkable 2,737 April 20, 2014 Share April 20, 2014 Hello all you pony loving fun people out there, otherwise known as Bronies! (and Pegasisters!) ^^ (\ So, here's the deal. An extremely close friend of mine and I plan on beining a podcast series in the coming future. Thing is, I somewhat know the basic things about it, I was just hoping to have some advice from Bronies who may have been in my shoes at a time, it would really help to be given a helping hoof or two, after all, we Bronies have to stick together! I think we're aiming for a somewhat professional series, we're going to be puting it on YouTube as an audio podcast with maybe a title or logo as the looping picture. Why Youtube? Why not, right? Sure, there are probably plenty of sites you can use for podcasting, but YouTube is big, and to get the encouragement we need, we'd like to feel we have a fair head start by starting on YouTube. I know if we're aiming to make a bigger thing of this, it's going to be a lttle expensive, and I think we're kind of prepared for it. I don't really want to sink too much into this until we feel we've caught our balance and have a general idea of what we're doing and how we're going to do it. Now, the main topic of the podcast will be GAMING, are you surprised? Shouldn't be. ^^" This guy and I know a lot about gaming, and you'll think I'm kidding until you would hear the first episode. Which may be a while off, since my work schedule is busy this week, I think we'll have a little time to meet up on this on Wednesday, so hopefully we'll make some progress there. Thankfully like Twilight Sparkle, I'm extremely organized and constantly find myself making and quadruple checking my checklists about re-checking my checked checklists. (...what?) Anyways, if some Bronies out there have a word of advice or two, I'd be more than happy to lend an ear. If there are any questions I can answer to help come up with suggestions, I'll of course, follow this topic. Thanks in advance for the help guys, this is something I'm really hoping to turn out good. But of course, you can't have something so good so easy, you have to work for it. (\

Evilshy 5,090 April 21, 2014 Share April 21, 2014 There are sooooooooooooo many gaming podcasts and YouTube series. In all likelihood, yours will be lost among them. May sound harsh, but its true. So, you have to find something that makes it unique. What's something about you and your friend that makes you able to make a podcast nobody else can make? And not something as simple as "we though of X first", because you provably didn't. It has to he something only you two can do. Nobody is interested in just another couple people talking about games. takai 1,060 April 21, 2014 Share April 21, 2014 So you want to start a podcast huh? Well, first let me tell you congratulations! Podcasting can be very fun. I personally have my own podcast on YouTube, and it has grown considerably over the past year. So much so that my podcast is considered one of the best in the topic my group and I indulge in. I'd be more than happy to give you a few pointers to get you started. The first thing you want to try to do is make your podcast look and sound as professional as possible. People are attracted to quality. When they see something genuinely good looking and sounding, they're more willing to stay and listen to what is going to be said. If they see something mediocre and poorly put together, they'll leave immediately without giving it a second thought. Add music, pictures, or more to make it appealing to the listener. (But make sure the music isn't copyrighted!) Also, the title logo as the background picture is exactly how my podcast started. So that's a great idea to start out with! Next, try to build some type of structure to your podcast. Different segments or portions for different things, e.g. News, Fan questions, or round-table discussions. A structure makes it easier for listeners to follow and understand your podcast. It also makes things like editing and overall conversation flow much easier. Don't stray too far from your original topic. It's ok to joke around for a minute or two about different off-topic things; it adds charm and personality to the conversation and podcast. But if you do it too much, it turns people off. They came to listen to [insert topic here], not ramblings of you and your friends. But like I said, a little never hurt anyone, and can add some personality to it all. When it comes to podcasting, doing to alone is really boring. Make sure to podcast with like-minded individuals that you can talk to very easily. That doesn't mean you all have the EXACT same opinion, that would be terrible. What I mean is, make sure you all share the same passion and enthusiasm about your topic. Don't bring in a good friend that you know could careless about what you want to talk about. Just because they're your friend doesn't mean they're right for the job. So picking group members is very important. Tags. Tagging your video with appropriate tags is crucial to your podcast's exposure. If you're doing a video game themed podcast, put things like: Video games, Xbox One, PS4, Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft, gaming, news, Mario, Master Chief..... And so on. Tags help your video to be found much easier. But make sure not to spam off-topic or irrelevant tags, because YouTube can actually take down your video for doing that. Finally, RSS Feeds. This is more of a professional aspect of podcasting. What are RSS Feeds? Well, what they REALLY are isn't important. Just know that if you'd like to expand your podcast's exposure to the world, using iTunes is the best way. iTunes takes the RSS Feed of your podcast, and puts it up for the whole world to see. iTunes is the biggest music/media client in the world, so obviously this is important if you're serious about podcasting. However, setting up RSS Feeds is something else entirely. It requires many things, including your own website (like wordpress.com, which is completely free). I can't tell you how to do it myself, because it's pretty difficult. I wouldn't focus on it until your podcast was grounded and coming out and regular basis. These are the basic tips to podcasting. I started off without help from anyone, and these are the most important things I've learned. If you'd like to take a look at my podcast, you can check out one of my most recent episodes: Good luck podcasting!
Gay Bird 421 April 21, 2014 Share April 21, 2014 Well just remember to record with your mic level lower than you think you need it to help keep peaking down and put a limiter on it when you boost it up. Also, EQs and compressors (well actually just 1 of each) will make it sound a lot better so get a basic understanding of that. Also, make sure you edit out the boring stuff. soniccam1 242 April 21, 2014 Share April 21, 2014 Hey, before I get to all the stuff, let me just say one thing. @@Adorkable, I decoded your message: "Twilight Sparkle is the best pony". That's my favorite pony too... Any who if your going to make a podcast make it good, include details of what you are talking about, if you have friends, then just talk and not worry about the audience at all. Me? I livestream. You'll learn a lot once you get used to it. GOOD LUCK! 1 Fours words, one goal: DROP DA BASS MAN. ~ soniccam1
Katana 298 April 21, 2014 Share April 21, 2014 Agree with takai; what really makes me willing to commit time is if the podcast is relatively interesting, but *remains pretty short* - too much time spent on a topic not EVERYone is going to be interested in is more likely to cause people to just close out that browser tab. I've seen podcasts that go on for an hour, simply because it's more like a random Skype conversation, and no one is trimming it down. It may sound mean, but be willing to trim things down in an external audio editing tool if things DO get a bit longer than expected.

When we have our meeting on Wednesday about it, I plan on setting the limit to 15 minutes, with a minimum of 10. I think that sounds pretty fair. The 5 minute difference would be a safety net in case we had a little extra we wanted to add. Also, we planned on answering questions from watchers when the show gets popular enough. But until then, we would more than likely take turns making our own. ^^ [Wall-o-Text] Good luck podcasting! Thank you so much! This is exactly the kind of help I was looking for! ^^ (\
