planning (Placeholder Title) A Duty to Freedom

I've had an idea brewing for a while for a particular MLP roleplay, which, in my opinion, is rather atypical for most MLP roleplayers, thus the reason I've made this thread. Onto the current plot summary:

(I was inspired to create this roleplay by the late Ronald Reagan's "We Must Fight"/"A Time for Choosing speech". For the sake of reference, here is a link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qXBswFfh6AY)

First and foremost, this roleplay does center around humans, though ponies (and the various other sentient/sapient species of Equestria will play very important roles. Keep in mind that this is a very rough draft, and some aspects of the plot will require refinement.

Equestria has always been a place of harmony, love, and friendship. Though they have faced many villains, for the most part, they have yet to experience the horrors of total war or even have the ability to fight a war that is limitless in its rules. When they are faced with an enemy that threatens and shows willingness to destroy Equestria entirely, how would they fight back? Would they even be able to? When their ideas of harmony come crashing down upon them, and they are clearly losing, they are faced with two choices: die free while fighting a war they cannot, or live as slaves. When Equestria is faced with a war it cannot win on its own; when the price for their freedom is one they cannot pay on their own, a friend appears to teach them why freedom is something that must always be cherished and why it is something that defines what it means to be alive.

This benefactor is humanity, a species that has faced many hardships throughout its existence; a species that would, for the most part, live and die for their freedom. They would even die for the freedom of others, simply because they believe that is what is right. In Equestria, humanity may find its first friends it will meet in the vastness that is space. In humanity, the myriad of peoples living in Equestria will learn the meaning of spirit, duty, and freedom. They will that, sometimes, there is not an easy way out; that freedom is something people may have to die to preserve.

Aaaaand that's the more interesting version of the summary. In essence, for the roleplay, Equestria is attacked by a vicious force that will only be satisfied by total slavery or total destruction. The human race wants to protect Equestrian freedom, at the cost of warfare and lives like Equestria never though possible. In order to save its freedom, the people of Equestria will be forced to commit previously unthinkable acts and sacrifices most of them never though possible. Now, here's what I need to work out:

1. Who should the enemy be? Should they be hostile aliens? Unholy magics and beings?

2. Does this idea even seem interesting to you? Why or why not?

3. How advanced should humans be? I was going to place them at a near-future to moderate sci-fi level of technological advancement (in essence, GDI from CnC all the way to the Federation), but I am open to suggestions.

I really like this idea, with that said I would like to lend some aid for getting the base ideas up.

1.Now I think it should be hostile aliens, due to the fact the everything on equestria seems to just not actually kill anypony.

2.This idea interests me a lot I like the whole humans come to equestria to save them from the evil alien forces that are raining upon their planet, that and freedom is kickass.

3.GDI is a good starting place, but it all really depends on how advanced the aliens are, cause if they are wearing diamond armor I doubt very much that A GDI trooper is gonna have a gun good enough.

1. That was my initial plan.

2. Well, it's not just that, but also that freedom sometimes comes with a price. The point of the humans is to emphasize how important is for a species's survival. That's why, when the humans come, it's going to be a mix of nations and cultures. The US, Canada, Europe, China, Japan, India, the whole shebang.

3. Well, uh, diamond would actually make rather awful armor due to the fact that it can be easily cut along certain point, but, that aside, the humans themselves are going to have to be rather advanced to make a difference against the hostile ETs. Their weaponry will be relatively frightening, too, at least from the PoV of the ponies. The humans aren't supposed to seem totally goody-goody when they arrive; they will look like that have done plenty of horrible things alongside kindnesses. They've seen quite a lot of suffering, and they know how to handle it.

Here are a few ideas that I would like to throw into the mix:

1. The enemy

i) The enemy could be a group of ponies affected by an alien, or unholy artifact

ii) It could also be mythical creatures from the human worlds (Greek, Roman, Egyptian, Norse, etc.)

2. Interest

i) The concept is interesting, however I tend not to enjoy futuristic eras or weaponry, and alien invasions. It is a bit generic, in my opinion.

3. Technology

i) My personal preference is the human era from the Ancient Age, up until the Enlightenment. This is partly because the fighting is a lot more interesting, not just shoot and the guy is dead sort of thing. Not to mention that battle tactics, communication, betrayal are rift with these eras.

ii) Another benefit from one the earlier ages is that magic, mythology, legend can play a big part.

ii) With the modern and future era's you lose the sense of magic, mythology and legend that you could play around with in an ancient to an enlightenment era roleplay, however you could start bringing in scientific feats accomplished by the modern and future eras, such as Plasma Cannons, Hovertanks, etc.

All in all, I'm just saying that bygone eras are also very interesting to play around with, and you should also keep in mind the large range of lore, and myth that you could integrate in as a result.

Hope this helped / Gave you ideas, PM me if you want anyone to bounce ideas off!

Oh, and I'm also following this thread, as I'd like to see what you get up to in the future!

Dovashy makes me think of soap xD.

I like the idea, it just that humans don't help people, they take everything, basically by accepting humanities help the ponies trade one master for another and if it's aliens I think the ponies could put up a reasonable fight

So, people have mistaken me for a nice guy. I'm not. Don't like it? Tough. Your loss.

We are getting something out of it, for sure. Equestria is ripe with resources. And, well, that is part of the point. The ponies know humanity can save them, but that it will come at a price. They are, after all, supposed to questions the humans and perhaps even some will dissent against us.

In regards to technology, I wanted to keep it modern, near-future, or sci-fi for the purpose of emphasizing what humanity has accomplished with its technology. That's not to say that old technology was not impressive for its time, but that would put us at a technological level close to ponies. I want advanced technology because it emphasizes the following: "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic."

Humanity will be accomplishing things with technology that appear fanciful to ponies. I will avoid typical high sci-fi, though, so you won't be seeing stuff that is overtly ludicrous.

And that's the same reason that the humans will not be using magic. It utterly marginalizes their technology if they have it. I want the ponies to see the humans as something they think to be impossible - a species that not only survived, but thrived in chaos and without a single instance of magic. We had to fight for our survival, because that was oftentimes the only thing we could do. Even in situations though to be unlivable to ponies, we stood up and lived. We made our harsh world our own, through hard work, study, and perseverance. We've been attacked by hostile forces many times, and we always survived. Equestria is like a candle in the dark for us - friendly, pacifistic aliens. A gem of a planet with resources in abundance. There are greedy reasons for us to help the ponies, but also genuine ones.
