First Attempt At Ponies... BLARGH

Marcato

Recommended Posts

So i decided to finally break down and draw ponies instead of anime/manga this time. I drew some concept art for the ancient legend from my fan comic, Silver.

The first pic turned out the best. Ignore the text if you want, just some personal comments...

My greatest difficolty (heheh) is with the head. I can't get the shape just right.

Any thoughts on my first awful attempt at pony drawing? Critiques? Feedback? Don't be afraid i'm looking for advice to fix them up.

Let me know if its really hard to see and i will try to get a better pic.

I'm glad to see you decided to start drawing them! I like fact that you drew Silver from every side.

If the pony-creator on DeviantART taught me anything, it'd have to be that the base shapes are key. Why not try using a reference picture first, and getting the shapes down? It may take longer, but it really works!

I've got an idea! No..... No, wait; it's just a concussion....

For a first attempt it's not bad, if your interested I know that the artist training grounds in DeviantArt have a large amount of pony drawing guides.

Truth be told the creator is where i got the basic reference for the head and body shape. However one thi g the creator lacks. Front and diagnol poses. D:

Well, from what I've experimented with, diagonal poses are just normal side poses, but inverted at certain angles. It helps to tilt the paper at different angles while drawing to get a new point of view. As for frontal views, it's more about symmetry. I usually think of it as two side-view faces flipped and stuck together.

I'm so used to drawing animals and such based off their anatomy and normally draw in an anime style. Most of thats stuff isn't existant in MLP except for some basic anatomy. (Pinkie has prooved that she rejects all laws of physics and anatomy anyways.)

XD dude, this is isnt good for your first attempt...its amazing! I mean i never would have DARED to try a front on view, ive been drawing em for about...i dunno....2 or 3 months now? And ive only just done my first front view pony. It was hard, and i achieved it on a lucky accident. But yeah. This looks WAY better than MY first one. xD of which is here (i did do a more, human like version for my first, but its...xD nothing like a pony honestly* http://mlpforums.com/gallery/image/1428-zacharius-court-apparell/

But yeah. Great job! Posted Image

First attempts aren't meant to look good... DON'T WORRY! You will get a lot better in time. I remember my first pony... It took a whole day to get it even semi-decent. But it is a great start, nonetheless!

Great adventuring for great treasures!....Except when I'm hurt...

I still failed pretty badly on the front facing view. XD might start uploading non-pony art too. I have an anime/manga comic thats a few pages long so maybe people would be interested in seeing it? Any takers? :3

In the mean time i'll practice this. I'll also see if i can find a good front facing pic of big mac or some other boy pony so i have an idea of how they are designed.

I think im a little late to the party. >>

but.

Like everyone else here, i think you did an amazing job on your first attempts. Do you draw a lot, or was this kinda spur of the moment?

For first time drawers, i reccomend looking up screencaps, and poses/expressions online of ponies.

Im an avid artist and i still do it. No shame. :3

it helps a lot. Ive been doing this for weeks on end and now ive pretty much got the pony thing down; hasbro style.

You've got a lot of potential, that i can say. Keep drawing!

Thanks a bunch. :) this isn't my first time drawing in general, just first time doing ponies. I'm still better at anime/manga though. Probably going to post the Anime/Manga comic i've been making, but where does it belong? Its not fanfiction and it isn't writing, but its still a story. Non-Pony art section or main hall??? IDK ANYMOAR.
