Unshorn Fetlocks

First of all, is it just me, or does "unshorn fetlocks" sound like an Irish insult? Secondly, it probably adds diversity to the designs and, like Kurai said, is used to mark the larger, tougher workin' stallions.

in g1 all the males had unshorn fetlocks, that was about the only way to tell them apart from the girls aside from their bandanas

Because there is a variety in reality.

Likewise, there are also varieties of horses and ponies that are very furry and fuzzy, rather than having the colored skin-like surface which we see on the show all the time.

If you're speaking in regards to the most notable appearance of long-haired fetlocks Big Macintosh, it's because his design is based upon the most famous kind of draft horse, the Cyldesdale: a breed that is noted for possessing fluffy fetlocks and being exceptionally large.

I think it's to tell them apart at least when it comes to diversity.

Basically this.

I guess only certain types of stallions have them. ^^"
